 Horizontal Consolidation (1897-1904)


o J.P. Morgan merged U.S steel with Carnegie steel and more than
700 small steel firms.
o Texaco, the petroleum Company was created as a result from the
mergers in this period.
o Simultaneous consolidation of manufacturers within one industry
o Mergers during this period got as a result the conformation of the first
“giants” in the oil, mining, and steel industries.

 Increasing Concentration (1916-1929)


o Dillon, Read & Company acquired Dodge Brothers Company for 148
million. (1925)
o Chrysler acquired Dodge Motors. (1928)
o Due to the mergers from combining the assets of 11 small petroleum
companies, Sinclair Oil and Refining Corporation was formed. (1916)

 The Conglomerate Era (1965-1969)


o New York Central and Pennsylvania railroads merged to become to
the sixth largest corporation (at the time) in America. (1968)
o Volkswagen acquired Audi. (1966)
o Coca-Cola acquired Minute Maid
o Berkshire acquires See´s Candy for 25 million. (1972)

 The Retrenchment Era (1981-1989)


o Ford acquired Jaguar for about 2.5 billion. (1989)
o Coca-Cola acquired movie studio Columbia Pictures for 692 million.

o Gap acquired Banana Republic. (1983)

 Age of Strategic Megamerger (1992-2000)


o Pfizer acquired Warner-Lambert for 90 billion. (2000)
