questions (i.e. type the solution) on it. Finally, submit your own solution file in
VULMS.
 Understand the problem then solve it according to the statements (requirements)
of the questions.
 If you do not solve the questions by the method that is asked (required) in the
problems then the marks will be deducted (or could be zero).

 All the students are directed to use the font and style of text as is used in this
document i.e. the font size/style should be preferably 12 Times New Roman with
black font color.
 The assignments should be zoomed in at 100%.
(6) Use MathType or Equation Editor etc. for writing the proper mathematical
symbols/expressions and equations.
 In MS-Word, to type an equation from scratch, press Alt += on your keyboard or
choose Insert --> Equation and select Insert New Equation from the bottom of
the built in equation gallery. This inserts an equation placeholder where you can
type your equation. It is recommended to visit the following link for more detail:

Question: 1 Marks: 10
Let defined by:

Show that is one-to-one and onto.

Solution:
Type your solution here.

Solution:

One to one ftn:

Let

So f(x) is one to one ftn.

Onto ftn:
f(x)=y

f( )=y
Question: 2 Marks: 10

Let and . Define binary relations and from to as follows:

For all
For all
Part (I) Represent and as a set of ordered pairs.
Part (II) Determine whether or is a function.

Solution:

Type your solution here.

Solution:
Part 1:
A  1, 2,3
B  2,3
R  { x, x   A  B  x  y}
R  {(1, 2)(1,3)(2, 2)(2,3)(3,3)}
S  {( x, y )  A  B  2 | ( x  y ) |
S  {(1,3)(2, 2)(3,3)}

Part 2:

R is not a function because for 1 there are two outputs 2 & 3. So S is a function.

Question: 3 Marks: 10

Part (I) Find the 20th term of the summation using the formula for arithmetic

sequence.

Solutions:

1   2n  1
n 1

1  3  5  7...........
a1  1
d  3 1  2
nth.term  20
an  a1  (n  1)d
a20  1  (20  1)2
a20  1  19 * 2
a20  1  38
a20  39
Part (II) Find the geometric sum of .
