VIRTUAL LABORATORY ACTIVITY

Faraday’s Experiment
I. Introduction:
In 1831, Michael Faraday showed that a changing magnetic field can induce an
emf in a circuit. From these observations, Faraday concluded that there exists a
relationship between the induced current/emf and the changing magnetic field. The
results of his experiments are now referred to as Faraday's Law of Induction. This time,
it’s your turn to experience and see what Faraday did with this online simulation!

II. Resources:
 Activity Sheet
 Internet
 Faraday’s Law – https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/faradays-law/latest/faradays-
law_en.html

III. Instructions
1. Follow the link provided in the resources. Upon opening the link, you will see this
interface.

2. Put a check mark on the “voltmeter” and “field lines.”

3. Grab the magnet and place it near the coil of wire (solenoid). Try sliding it in and
out of the solenoid slowly. Observe what happens.
4. Repeat step 3 but this time do it faster. Observe what happens.
5. This time, try flipping the magnet so that its “south pole” is now directed to the coil.
Then repeat steps 3 & 4. Observe what happens.
6. At the bottom part of the screen, click the other white box to show 2 kinds of
solenoids, thin and thick. Repeat steps 3 & 4, observe what happens and compare
the results.
IV. Points to Ponder
1. Explain what happens when the magnet moves through the coil at different speeds
and how this affects the brightness of the bulb and the magnitude & sign of the voltage.
the faster the magnet moves the lower the electricity output and the slower the magnet

moves the bighter and more powerful electrical output

2. Explain the difference between moving the magnet through the coil from the right side
versus the left side.
it is the same

3. Explain the difference between moving magnet through the big coil versus the smaller
coil.
The Brightness of the bulb is affected the smaller the coil the brightness of bulb and

larger the coil the brighter the light
