WHAT IS A TIME
MOTION STUDY?
Group 6 TIME AND MOTION STUDY

A time and motion study (or time-motion study) is a business efficiency

technique combining the Time Study of Frederick Winslow Taylor with a
Motion Study of Frank Gilbreth and Lillian Gilbreth.

Time Study

Frederick Winslow Taylor, an American mechanical engineer who was widely

known for his methods to improve industrial efficiency.
Motion Study

Frank Gilbreth,an American engineer, consultant, and author known as an early

advocate of scientific management and a pioneer of time and motion study.
Lillian Gilbreth, an American psychologist, industrial engineer, consultant, and
educator who was an early pioneer in applying psychology to time-and-motion
studies.

Additionally, time and motion study is an important aspect of scientific

management.

Time study is all about determining the ideal time taken in the
performance of a well-defined job.
Motion study is the analysis of human work, to find out the best
method of doing it which involves least efforts.
For this purpose, the existing proposed ways of performing the task are
recorded and analyzed carefully, in order to develop and implement an
easier and effective method, which ultimately results in a reduction of
cost.
This is because the reduction in movement is concerned with the
elimination of the unnecessary and unproductive movements, so as to
take as less time as possible, in the completion of the job efficiently.
The primary goal of this study is the improvement in performance both
in terms of quality and quantity of output, by analyzing the body
posture, body movements and hand movements.

EXAMPLE
Ford had been trying to increase his factories’ productivity
for years. The workers who built his Model N cars arranged
the parts in a row on the floor, put the under-construction

auto on skids and dragged it down the line as they worked.
This style of production takes time to complete a car.
Later, the streamlining process grew more sophisticated.
Ford broke the Model T’s (the successor of Model N)

each of his workers to do just one. He also hired motion-

human worker could). This resulted in a faster production

a car from more than 12 hours to one station to another.

The group discussed their understandings and

able to gathered the following:

1st Case: An assembly of one hex bolt with a flat

washer, lock washer and two hex nuts takes 1 minute
and 44 seconds to complete the assembly with bare
hands.

2nd Case: The person assembled ten hex bolts in 58.31

seconds along with the use of a fixture.

The first and second case shows

that the fixture removed
unnecessary movement,
reducing output time while
WHAT producing more product.
YOU'LL
LEARN The process has become more
efficient while being more
productive, and that an equipment
can be the major advantage of the
person compared when he has none
yet, in performing the same task.
Group 6 TIME MOTION STUDY

With this in mind, it can be a testimony to company's using different equipment

and strategies of their operations can be an advantage used to edge their
competition.

Having a proper layout plan where employees are utilized with jobs that they are
skilled or trained at, can be more efficient while still utilizing the men with their
reserved efforts. The more efficient they are, the more productive they are.

With these, management then looks into what they can improve upon,( job
specificity) being that there is already a layout plan. the more efficient, the more
productive, then quality value increases.
