NAME:
Ms. Rita Reyes., a 22 year old female had consulted the health center because of fever
since three days ago. This is accompanied by loss of appetite to eat, body malaise, headache,
abdominal pains. Her vital signs are as follows: Temperature = 38.7'C, Pulse Rate (PR) = 86
beats per minute (bpm), Respiratory Rate (RR) = 21 breaths per min, & blood pressure = 90/60
mm/Hg. Ms. Reyes claims that she had lost weight because of her fever and loss of appetite to
eat. She lives in a crowded community which is constantly submerged in water due to floods.
This causes severe problems in sanitation & source of water supply. Laboratory tests & physical
examination revealed dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF).
Ms. Reyes is extremely worried because she had a neighbor who died because of DHF few
months ago. In addition, she is concerned over financial expenses for her illness and her
absence from her job as a crew in a fastfood center. She also verbalizes difficulty of sleeping in
unfamiliar environment like the hospital.
Direction: List down at least 2 or 3 problems of given the case of Ms. Reyes.
With these problems you have identified, choose among the 13 Canons of
Nightingale which can be applied to address or solve the problem of Ms.

PROBLEM
Canons of Nightingale which can be applied to address or solve the problem of Ms.
Reyes
According to Nightingale, if nurses alter the patient's environment in accordance with her
environmental tenets, they can aid the patient's recovery or return to normal health.
According to Ms. Reyes' circumstances, dengue fever (DHF) was a highly widespread
and common sickness caused by the conditions in her neighborhood, particularly the
frequent flooding, as mosquitoes would thrive and reproduce in this kind of
environment. I will advise Ms. Reyes the proper disposal of garbage into her home
and to her community to prevent floods that cause them problems to access clean
water. She needs to have a HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT or HEALTH OF HOUSES based
on the 13 canons of Nightingale.
II. Nutrition (taking food)- The nurse should be aware of the patients' diets and
keep track of how much food each patient has consumed and should consume daily.
I'll tell Ms. Reyes that she needs to eat extra nutritious foods to fight infections and
replenish her body's nutrients. A bowl of nutritious soup will replenish electrolytes in
her body. A good eating diet will also aid her recovery; it is critical to include GO,
GLOW, and GROW foods in all meals. As nurses, it is our responsibility to take
charge of Ms. Reyes so that we can maintain a positive relationship with her so that
she can trust my recommendations.
III. Variety- During a prolonged confinement to one or two rooms, the sick suffer from
their nerves seeing the same walls, the same ceiling, and the same surroundings.
The majority of happy situations involve patients who are not sequestered in one
space. Most sad people will experience a prolonged period of object monotony
around them.
I'll stay in touch with Ms. Reyes and let her know that she needs to be hospitalized
since it's the best place for her condition to be treated and the only way to get the
best care for a quick recovery.
