1. a) With proper nomenclature, derive how a delta connected network of resistors can be 6
transformed to its equivalent star network.
b) Find the current through 10Ω resistor in the network shown below using 6
Superposition Theorem:

c) Find Thevenin’s equivalent voltage and Thevenin’s equivalent resistance between 8

the terminals A & B for the network shown below:

2. a) A Resistor R, an ideal inductor L and an ideal capacitor C are connected in series 6
across 200V, 50Hz supply. If the total reactive power drawn is 3.2KVAR and
powerfactor of the circuit is 0.6Lag, determine
i) Resistance R
ii) Capacitance C if L = 0.1H
iii) For what value of C, total reactive power becomes zero with the remaining
elements unchanged.
b) The impedance offered by a two-element network connected to a 50Hz AC supply is 6
(5-j10)Ω. Determine the values of the elements if they are connected in
i) Series
ii) Parallel
c) The power consumed in an inductive load is 5 kW at 0.5 lagging power factor. The 8
input voltage is 500 V, 50 Hz. Find the value of the capacitor C which must be
placed in parallel, such that the resultant power factor of the input current becomes
0.9 lagging.

3. a) With a neat circuit diagram and proper notation, derive the relationship between line 6
voltage and phase voltage in a balanced star connected three phase system.
b) A balanced delta connected three phase load draws 10KW when connected across 6
400V, 50Hz three phase supply. If the load powerfactor is 0.5 Lead, determine
i) Phase current
ii) Resistance per phase
iii) Capacitance per phase
iv) Total Reactive power
c) A Delta connected balanced three phase load having an impedance of (6+j8)Ω per 8
phase is connected across a 415V, 50Hz three phase supply. Determine
i) Line current
ii) Readings of the two wattmeters used to measure the input power

If the same three phase load is reconnected as star connected load across the same
supply, determine the new values of line current and wattmeter readings.

4. a) A 10KVA, 200V/400V, 50Hz single phase transformer has a maximum flux in the 4
core of 7.21mWb.
Determine
i) Rated primary and secondary currents

b) An 8 pole three phase alternator running at 750rpm supplies power to a 4 pole three 6
phase induction motor. Determine
i) Synchronous speed
ii) Slip of the motor when running at 900rpm
iii) frequency of rotor currents when running at 750rpm
c) A DC Shunt Motor running on light load draws 4A from a 500V DC supply. If 10
armature and field resistances are 2Ω and 500Ω respectively, determine
i) Constant Losses
ii)Efficiency when running as a generator delivering an electrical power output of
10KW
iii)Efficiency when running as a motor drawing an input electrical power of 10KW

5. a) What is the primary objective of earthing? Mention any two methods of earthing. 4

b) Write a short note on the following devices: 6
