All praises and thanks to Allah Almighty. The Lord and Creator of this universe by
Whose power and glory all good things are accomplished. He is also the most Merciful, who
bestowed on me the potential, ability and an opportunity to work on this project.

I am grateful to my respected supervisor Dr. Waseem Ur Rehman who has guided

me in each and every step of this project. Indeed, without his kind  guidance I may
not have been able to even start this project. May ALLAH give him the reward which he
deserves. I am also grateful to my mentors who are related to the organization of Super Asia Ltd.

Despite of the most hectic schedule, Sir Tariq Mahmood (GM Finance) helped me
so much. I'm really grateful to him for clarifying my concepts and making me learn
from his experience. Whatever I have learnt from him will definitely be helpful in
my upcoming study and the professional life ahead.

In the end, I am also thankful to all my teachers and specially my HOD Dr. Naveed Iqbal

HISTORY OF MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY IN PAKISTAN

Home appliances are the necessities for living, w i t h o u t h o m e a p p l i a n c e s i t i s v e r y

d i f f i c u l t t o s p e n d o u r l i v e s . I t w a s t h e t i m e w h e n  people did not have the washing
machines, fans, air coolers, air conditioners, microwave ovens, water coolers and heaters but
time makes the inventions and necessities make the inventions. Now at this time it is very
difficult to spend the life without these appliances. A lot of companies are manufacturing these
home appliances in the Pakistan like, Stylo, Toyo, Asia, Nas gas, Super Asia and a large
number of local companies.

Kitchen appliances were designed to make life easier when cooking and preparing
food. Since the mid-1800s, people have been thinking of new and innovative ways
to s t o r e f o o d , c o o k f o o d a n d c l e a n u p a f t e r e a t i n g f o o d . M a n y o f t h e s e
i d e a s w e r e g o o d enough to be used by a large number of people and they are still around
today. Inventors are still trying to make things easier by coming up with new products that do
more things. Following is a few of the inventions that have stood the test of time and
continue to be used by millions of Americans today. In Pakistan it was the 1970
after which the home appliances are started to uses to make the home life easier. No
doubt before 1970 home appliances were used but only elite families were able to
purchase cooking range, air conditioners and microwave oven. There were very
minimum numbers of industries in Pakistan before 1970, after which very rare
people started to produce the appliances at local level. At the start, some people
who start this business, take a start with only one  product and steadily start the
production of other products. Most of the companies were dealing only with one product
like some with washing machines, some with fans, some with hot and cold coolers and
geysers in Pakistan.

16
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
But when the producers saw that the foreigner companies are capturing the market and the
product line of these companies is large, the local companies decided to increase their product
line. Pakistani companies start to produce the whole line of home appliances in their companies
and slowly improve their image in the minds of the customers. There are few cities in
Pakistan like Gujranwala, Lahore, Karachi and Gujrat which are f u l f i l l i n g t h e
demands of home appliances in the market of Pakistan. There are large
number of industries producing the washing machines, spinners, cooking range and ovens in
Gujranwala but in fan industry Gujrat is at the top. No doubt, the foreign companies
and Chinese products are the big threat for the local industry but still local companies are
winning the customer minds by providing the quality in the market.

2021
Super Asia is exporting its products Washing Machine, Fan, Air Cooler to various countries like:
Afghanistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh UAE, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Turkey,
Qatar . According to their standard in trend. We have also a good network of dealers and after
sales in these countries. Mr. Zaheer is the export manager and deals with the all kinds of exports.
He has been here since 12 years. Super Asia exports their goods to Sudan, Africa and Gulf
countries. Export products are following

 Fans

 Washing Machines

 Room Air Cooler

 Auto Rickshaw

 Motorcycles

Sometimes they export goods by parts like auto rickshaw but mostly assembled like washing
machine or room air cooler. There is no custom duty they have to be paid. There are no

warranties in export countries but they only provide parts to the dealers as required. So the
dealers deal itself with the customer related to claims. Their highly profitable products are fans
and room air cooler mostly in Gulf and Africa region. As the order is concerned they get ordered
according to the season. The communication strategy is through internet and telephone. Export
marketing is also deals by export manager. There are two types of marketing one is through e-
marketing, ads on web sites, emails and telephones. The second one they arrange exhibition on
different countries to get the share of market. They do exhibits in Gulf and Africa region but now
they are planning to arrange the exhibition in china also. Mr. Zaheer Ahmad directly reports to
the director Mr. Afzal Akram.

In documentation they have made the following:

27
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
 Commercial Invoice

 Packing List

 Form

 Clearance of Custom

 Clearance of Port

 Issue of Bill of Lading

After the above documents are arranged then the documentation process completes. As for as the
testing of documents is concerned the chamber of commerce have to check the documents and
give a clearance, because of this they get the rebate on different products like on fan they get
1.72% rebate and on washing machine 1.41% rebate. For the whole process they used Karachi
sea port for the clearance of shipment.

The main competitor in international market is China. Super Asia cannot compete china properly
but in Room air cooler Super Asia have an edge on china because they did not made the room air
cooler instead they made big cooler used in big factories and sheds.

All the payments have to be made by the account department on the request of export manager.
Every country have its own different certification (safety measures) required and they have to

complete all the certification. For example in Kuwait there is KASO. In Africa there is SABS
and so on. Because these are electrical products so that’s the main reason they required safety
measures.

IMPORTS

Mr.Sharjeel Aslam is the manager of imports office since last 15 years. Super Asia imports 50%
of raw material and assembled goods from China and also from Japan, Korea, Singapore and

28
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
Malaysia. They import almost all the raw material of washing machines and other products from
china and other countries, like copper wire, plastic Dana, ball bearing gear and timer etc. They
also import total assembled goods from china like AC, Microwave, Instant water geyser and
Water dispenser. In here they just change the packaging and print the logo of the company. Also
motor bikes parts are import and just assembled here, only few of parts purchased locally and
some made in the company.

The custom duty on each of the product is different. Sale Tax rate is 16%. And Income tax rate is
5%. They have a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) certificate so it waves off the duty by 3 to 4 %. If
they import total assembled goods then its duty is high. For example in water dispenser they
have to pay 25% and if they import in parts and assembled here then the duty will be 15%. In
Korea (FTA) raw material duty is 10%. And in China FTA raw material duty is 6.5% and so on
for other countries.

In trade like AC, Water dispenser and Instant water geyser they have 3 to 4 parties. Before
making the agreement they check their price, style and model and then they select the party for
trade. But in raw material they do not have a specific party like in case of AC and other products
they purchased raw material from open market where they can get low price and better quality
parts. They also have to mention the grade and quality on each of the product.

In documentation process they negotiate with the party related to its product and the terms and
conditions made which include price, rate, quality and way of transmission. Then the company
issue Performa invoice, then they open Letter of Credit (LC) in the bank, and the process of

documentation will be complete. Mr. Sharjeel Aslam directly reports to the director Mr. Afzal
Akram. When the store department needs anything for production they inform the import office
90 days before, because the shipment process takes 60 to 72 days. All the payments made by the
accounts department as the request of Mr. Sharjeel Aslam.

PORTERS FIVE FORCES MODEL

Super Asia has lost its competitive edge when it comes to other brands. We will discuss in the
light of the Porter’s Five Forces Model. These five forces are following:
 The risk of new entry by potential competitors
 Rivalry among established firms
 The bargaining power of the buyer
 The bargaining power of the supplier
 The threat of substitute products

RIVALRY AMONG ESTABLISHED FIRMS

The direct competitors of Super Asia are Dawlance, Waves, LG, and Haier etc. Dawlance is
market leader in the home appliances and PEL is still on second number. But in window room
air conditioner (WRAC) the PEL is market leader. The indirect competitors for Super Asia in
this industry are Samsung, Orient, Mitsubishi, Sabro, Nobel and others Chinese brands available
in the market. The Super Asia has no big threat from all these companies.

RISK OF NEW ENTRY BY POTENTIAL COMPETITORS

High Investments. Threat for new entrants is high in this industry, partly due to the fact that this
industry is a lucrative industry and is very attractive for foreign companies. But in order to really
make a mark in this industry, you need to have strong investment and funding. For this matter,
Super Asia is at risk of the influx of foreign investments in this sector. Foreign Brands. Foreign
brands like LG, Sony, Samsung, Mitsubishi and Haier etc. are a big threat for Super Asia. The
quality and brand image of foreign brands is high as compared to Super Asia. Foreign brands
have captured the market of split AC and television.

55
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
THE BARGAINING POWER OF THE BUYERS

Company’s buyers are the people who ultimately purchase and consume its products. If there are
so many brands and products available in the market at different prices, the bargaining power of
the buyers will be high because they have many alternatives, they can demand to lower the
prices. On the other hand if there are few brands or companies in the market, then the buyers will
be in a weak position to bargain. As a result, the company can raise its prices and earn greater
profits. If we see the Pakistani industry the bargaining power of the buyers is very high because a
variety of products are available in the market at different prices. So the buyers can choose
the product according to his requirements.

THE BARGAINING POWER OF THE SUPPLIERS

Suppliers can be viewed as a threat when they are in few numbers in the market. In that case, the
suppliers are able to force up the price of inputs. The after effects of that can result in the
reduction in the quality of inputs. If the suppliers of Super Asia Company are weak then
company will force the suppliers to reduce the prices of input and demand for higher quality. If
the suppliers are selling the products that have very few substitutes and are differentiated from
others, then the suppliers are always in good bargaining position. That is why Superasia is doing
vertical integration and producing their own raw materials for finished goods as well like motors,
casing, PVC and pipes, plastic, metal, wiring, knobs etc.

THREAT OF SUBSTITUE PRODUCTS

The market is really concentrated with many different brands producing same products.
Therefore it is very easy to find a substitute for a product in the market under different brand
names. All of these brands operate in the market producing almost identical products but with
different qualities and prices. The easy entry to this market has allowed the Chinese companies
to enter into the market and start selling their product at affordable prices. These competitors
like Haier, LG, Sony, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Changong Ruba etc. have made a place in the
market and floated their products making an overlap of products. There is a lot of

56
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
choice between the brands and therefore this has divided the market shareamongst different
companies making Superasia less profitable and with less market share.

BOSTON COSULTING GROUP ANALYSIS

The business portfolio is the collection of businesses and products that make up the company. So
in Super Asia every product is the business portfolio for the company. The best business
portfolio is one that fits the company's strengths and helps exploit the most attractive
opportunities.

The company must:

 Analyze its current business portfolio and decide which businesses should or less
investment, for example in Super Asia some of the business portfolio need more
investment like Air Conditioner, Microwave Oven and some business portfolios like
Washing Machines need less investment.
 Develop growth strategies for adding new products and businesses to the portfolio, while
at the same time deciding when products and businesses should no longer be retained.
Super Asia has made the strategy for growth and adding new products; like Insulation
Sheet.

METHOD OF PORTFOLIO PLANNING

The two best-known portfolio planning methods are from the Boston Consulting Group (the
subject of this revision note) and by General Electric/Shell. In each method, the first step is to
identify the various Strategic Business Units ("SBU's") in a company portfolio. An SBU
(Strategic Business Unit) is a unit of the company that has a separate mission and objectives and
that can be planned independently from the other businesses.
An SBU can be a company division, a product line or even individual brands - it all depends on
how the company is organized. In Super Asia every of their SBU has separate mission and

57
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
objectives and the management makes the individually planning for every of their SBU. So we
can say that there are 10 SBUs of super Asia

The Boston Consulting Group Box ("BCG Box")

Using the BCG Box (an example is illustrated above) a company classifies all
its SBU's according to two dimensions:
On the horizontal axis: Relative Market Share
 This serves as a measure of SBU strength in the market
On the vertical axis: Market Growth Rate
 this provides a measure of market attractiveness By dividing the matrix into four areas,
four types of SBU can be distinguished:

STARS

Stars are high growth businesses or products competing in markets where they are relatively
strong compared with the competition. Often they need heavy investment to sustain their growth.
Eventually their growth will slow and, assuming they maintain their relative market share, will
become cash cows. Here the motorcycle and fans of Super Asia best fit because their
growth is high but they still need high investment to sustain their growth.

CASH COWS

Cash cows are low-growth businesses or products with a relatively high market share. These are
mature, successful businesses with relatively little need for investment. They need to be managed
for continued profit - so that they continue to generate the strong cash flows that the company
needs for its Stars. Washing Machines of Super Asia comes under this head because they are
earning a lot for the company and need very low investment.

QUESTION MARKS

Question marks are businesses or products with low market share but which operate in higher
growth markets. This suggests that they have potential, but may require substantial investment in
order to grow market share at the expense of more powerful competitors. Management have to
think hard about "question marks" – which ones should they invest in? Which ones should they
allow to fail or shrink? Water Dispensers, Geyser, Room Air Cooler and Safe Lines have very
low market share but they operate in higher market growth. Super Asia should think about the
Water Dispenser, Geyser, Room Air Cooler and the Insulation Sheet because they can earn a lot
for the company, if investment is made in these business portfolios.

DOGS

Unsurprisingly, the term "dogs" refers to businesses or products that have low relative share in
unattractive, low-growth markets. Dogs may generate enough cash to break-even, but they are
rarely, if ever, worth investing in. Air Conditioners and Microwave Oven of Super Asia are at
this stage.

COMMENTS ON RATIO ANALYSIS

From the Super Asia Pvt. Limited financial statements we can see that the Sales of the company
increase in 2018 as compare to 2019. The cost of goods sold has also increased in 2018 but

76
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
decrease in 2019. So the G.P is also increasing trend as compare to current years but with
fluctuation. The operating expenditure is also in increasing trend which affects the net profit.
But the net profit is decreased as compare to previous years. The export of Super Asia is also
almost 50 % of the total sale of the products in the 2019 and that was in 2014 is 10%. The
taxation provision increased in 2019 as compare to 2018.

LIQUIDITY POSITION
Liquidity ratio is for the firm’s ability to meet the short term obligations. It shows the firm
financial position that the firm has insufficient cash for the short term payments to the creditors
as compare to 2018. The only current ratio of the company is also satisfactory. The Acid test
ratio shows the more liquidity position of the assets. This is also not meeting the requirements of
the company.

LEVERAGE RATIOS
Leverage position indicates that how much the company is using the external financing in the
business. Debt to total assets ratio means that how the assets are financed by the borrowing. The
use of debt during years is fluctuating according to its needs. Debt to equity ratio shows that how
much proportion of the debt in the equity of the company. In 2019 it was increased in and then
decreased in 2018 which show that the debt is greater than equity which made improvement in
the business.

COVERAGE RATIO
This shows that either the financial charges (interest) is met by the EBIT or not. It shows how
many times the company’s EBIT is fulfilling the financial charges. The interest coverage ratio is
in 2019 increased & 2018 is decreased. It means EBIT is fulfilling the financial charges of the
company but not with very good position. The cash coverage of interest ratio shows that how
many times the EBIT + Depreciation meet the financial charges of the company this ratio trend
is as2.54:1 in 2018 but in next year remained same i.e. 2.19:1 is satisfy than interest coverage
ratio.

ACTIVITY RATIOS

77
UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB, GUJRANWALA CAMPUS

2021
Activity ratio shows that how the firm used the assets in the operation of business. Trend of
activities ratio is fluctuating. In 2018 5.3 times A/R are generated but this ratio is decreased in
2019 2.5 Times. It means the account receivables are converted into cash in 31days. That is very
better for the company to collect from their customers. The inventory turnover show the ratio as
in 2018 is 0.0222 it was decreased in 2019 up to 0.0142 that is very bad position for the
company it means company is taking more time to convert its inventory into Cash. So, Activity
ratio shows that the management is recovering the receivable efficiently but the inventory
turnover and days are not efficient the management should use the efficient utilization of assets
and should manage their inventory.

PROFITABILITY POSITION
The trend in the profitability of the company is 1.220% in 2019, 1.424% in 2018. Profit margin
increased in 2011 but decreased in 2012.The reason of net profit decreasing is that the sale has
increased in 2018 but expenses decreased and increase in the financial charges that directly
effect on the Net profit.
Return on investment measures overall effectiveness & earning power of invested capital, this
ratio is in decrease from 2019 (0.0142%) to (0.0222% in 2018). The reason is simply that due to
other investment; reduce the effective utilization of total assets. Return on Equity is also in
decreasing in 2019 as compared to 2018. In brief we can say that the company performance
fluctuating due to some reasons but in well position the company should take prompt action
about the performance and the profitability to lead the Production sectors

MY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE/ TRAINING PROGRAMME

I have been working in Super Asia MDS Ltd as an internee for 6 weeks.
There is a reason for choosing this company for internship experience was
t h a t i t i s o n e o f t h e  biggest companies in our city. Although other companies and banks
also offer the facility of internship for BBA students but I decided to work in Super Asia for its
reputation and i t s f r i e n d l y   e n v i r o n m e n t .
A l t h o u g h   a n   i n t e r n e e   i s   n o t   a   p e r m a n e n t   e m p l o y e e   o f   t h e company but can
get a lot of knowledge and skills in this very short period and so did I.
I took it as opportunity for me and my career and tried to acquire as many skills as I could. The
management and other staff of my department have been very cooperative and guided
me throughout my internship period. They treated me like the employee of the company and
took my full time to work in the company for me to get used to of working in an organization.
It was for the first time in my life when I felt that there are some  practical and
reasonable assignments in front of me and I tried to accomplish each and every task
with full of my responsibilities and capabilities. The duties and skills I learnt working in
SuperAsia are as follows:
I learnt,

 There is quite a difference between the theoretical knowledge that we get to study from
books as compared to that within a practical organization. Lots of problems and issues
are not even stated in books and we actually cannot implement all the stated solutions
onto an organization
 How to interpret the financial statements of an organization including the balance sheets,
inome statements, statement of equity changes, statement of cashflow etc,
 How can I interpret the current position of the company by analyzing the financial
statements

 how to enter particular data into a software and how all records are maintained

 I was given particular tasks which included performing the ratio analysis and vertical
and horizontal analysis of the financial statements

DIFFICULTIES FACED IN GETTING DATA

It was quite a challenging task for me to attain the required data as it was very difficult for my
supervisor and training head to keep providing us with all the relevant information and details
due to his own duties and responsibilities, secondly the organization is so extensively distributed
and expanded as well as the data as it was in huge quantity and numbers hence it was very
difficult to be collected and analyzed in such a calculated duration.

RECOMMENDATIONS

During my 6 week internship duration, I have gained the opportunity to use my practical
exposure and knowledge where I have experienced different new skills on the job. Some
recommendations are given to Super Asia according to my own knowledge. I have realized that
Super Asia is performing very well since its inception. It difficult to give suggestion to improve
the working conditions of Super Asia MDS and Motors Bikes Ltd. As we know that nothing is
perfect, there is always a room for improvement, so I have found during my internship can be
made up taking into account the following suggestions:

 Super Asia is also offering motorcycle with its brand name but during my internship
period I came to know that there are a lot of complaints the company is facing from its
motorcycle department. So the organization must improve the quality of its motorcycle in
order to maintain its goodwill.

 The organization is also in process of computerizing its records which is good sign but it
is going on with small progress. Computerization must be done on early basis. This will
help in increasing efficiency of work done, customer’s satisfaction decreases the
stationary cost and resultantly it will increase profits.

 In past Super Asia MDS Limited has always being suffered from bad Government
policies. Government intervention should be completely avoided.

 Employees Training programmer must be introduced on continuous basis so that

Employees have understanding with the latest developments especially with the
customers.

 Super Asia should introduced incentive plans for employees on regular basis so that if
employees may work whole heartedly for the welfare of their organization. While giving
incentives qualification, work, experience, hard work and such other factors must be
considered.

 Mismanagement of resources must be avoided as much as possible as it decreases profit

but also discourage hard worker and honest employees.

 Fresh graduates must be recruited. As the combination of experienced and fresh can
produce better results and it will improve the efficiency of management.

 Company’s different schemes must be conveyed to the targeted customers so that to

increase the share in market.

 Management by objectives needs to be introduced immediately. It will help improve the

functioning of the organization and will lead to greater participation and the workers and
subordinates will be encouraged.

CONCLUSION

It’s a period of Globalization, any organization or institute who ignore the element of
globalization automatically kick out from the market. Only those can be surviving who compete
this global market perfectly. There is a “Survival of the fittest.” So the Super Asia Pvt. Ltd has
the opportunity to survive the global market because it has the better good will the can capture
all the country and also stand in global market.

Super Asia is also faces a tenor in which there is both opportunities and threats for it to
be able and survive and growth. But many of the challenges that shall occur will be outside of
the control of the company. Organization exists when two or more people work towards
achieving common goals. An organization can never be better than the people it hires. Hence we
have to get the best to be the best because the performance of the employees reflects the
company’s image and standing in the market.

Out of the three “M”s i.e.

 Man
 Money
 Machine

Hiring employees is not the sole objective rather the primary goal is to devise a
tool that can help the organization attract, maintain, retain and motivate them enough to give
their best to the organization. Training and development is therefore the first step towards
success. Better the quality of the employees better the performance of the company. An
organization’s ability to meet the training and development challenges provides an opportunity
to make significant contribution to the company. Here in the end I want to sum up my report of
internship in Super Asia in few words. Again I would like to say thanks to Super Asia and it all

employees for providing such supportive environment of learning. I must say that my 6 weeks
internship experience in Super Asia was a great learning time and I believe that it will be very
helpful for me in future career.

During my internship in Super Asia I had chance to practically use my knowledge

and skills which I have gained during my study as well as I gained and experienced different new
skills on the job. It also helped to learn about the manufacturing sector working in Pakistan, its
procedures and products and services. Here in the report I have tried my best to give very
informative and useful details regarding my internship in Super Asia and I believe that by
reading this one would agree with me that gaining practical experience of what we learn in books
is as important and useful as any other thing. I was fortunate enough to secure a position as an
internee here and thereby able to do an in depth analysis of the working environment of this
company from the inside and of the external environment.
