The impact of Artificial Intelligence in the Aviation Industry

By: Patricia Marie De Guzman

Artificial Intelligence is said to be one of the fastest-growing technology in the present times. As per the
definition, it refers to the technology of machines based on the natural intelligence that is displayed by
humans. Nowadays, with the use of Artificial Intelligence, it helps almost all our activities in our daily
lives. It is one of a great and clever innovations of technology that is now being adopted universally,
including the Aviation Industry. We, as an aspiring aviation students, are eager to learn more about our
preferred course, much more about what innovations are in there. In this essay, I want to talk about how
this Artificial Intelligence assist and helps in aviation because we all know that AI has been a big help and
is said to help more in the future with its advancements in computing and the accessibility of data.
The beginning of the modern artificial intelligence or AI was formally found in 1956 in Hanover, New
Hampshire at a conference in Dartmouth college. It describes and imitates the human intelligence exhibiting
traits such as learning and problem-solving with the use of machines and advanced technologies today.
Artificial Intelligence creates and makes autonomous application that will ameliorate the systems of an
aircraft. It is by far a common knowledge that an Artificial Intelligence can really help in the aviation sectors
and how we can travel safely and more efficiently because it makes it easier for the people who operates
them have the help of a computer-generated system that can surpass their intelligence and further challenges
people’s learning. Moreover, the Artificial Intelligence has a great impact on the Aviation Industry because
it enhances their services and satisfy their customers. Artificial Intelligence can also help enhance the
operational efficacy and speed in the Aviation.
According to Jansons (2018), The world’s leading airlines are already using Artificial Intelligence to
improve their operational efficiency and avoid costly mistakes and increase the satisfaction of their
customers. With the use of AI, it changes the way an aviation industry’s companies deals with the way they
approach their data, operations, and revenue system. Operations have been made much easier with less
complications to improve an airline’s system.
In Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and deep learning helps to create applications that can learn
autonomously and are helping to advise or provide solution on complex problems. Aviation is not an
exception to this. Recently, the technology is said to have gained traction in the field of intelligence
maintenance, engineering and prognostic tools, supply chains, and customer services. (Berti, 2020) The
positive feedback and the benefits it gained encourages the sector to find out more about the applications
of Artificial Intelligence involving some European countries, namely, Ireland, Finland, Cyprus,
Luxembourg, Sweden, and Netherlands. The sector is now much more interested with the way involvement
of artificial intelligence has a great impact in those fields.
As stated by Paul Bosman, head of the infrastructure division of the EUROCONTROL, “The aviation
industry has started to exploit the potential of machine learning algorithms on non-safety critical
applications.” This means that heads of the program are studying and learning how the artificial intelligence
can improve the sectors in aviation. The ability of an Artificial Intelligence to identify what the human and
conventional computer-assisted analyses struggle to recognize makes it suitable for the aviation sector. It
really is a big help in making advances in aviation. Bosman added that AI has the potential to transform
aspects of the aviation sector, enabling ATM functions to be performed in entirely different ways in the
future.
For instance, according to Reichmann (2020), Artificial Intelligence may have large impacts on piloting an
aircraft. There is a Chinese company named EHang that is making a passenger autonomous aerial vehicles
or AV that are developing an AI technology for intelligent navigation of flights. The EHang aerial vehicle
has an autopilot system that is empowered by artificial intelligence. It can perform the process like when a
pilot is driving an airplane, from take-off to landing only the difference here is that it can perform all of
those without a pilot. There will also be an enhancement in the predicative maintenance and air traffic
control with the intention that it will make airline operations a lot more beneficial.
There are a lot of different sectors where an Artificial Intelligence machinery allows the aviation companies
improve their business and systems. According to Jansons (2018), one of it is Fleet and operations
management. This will help the airlines reduce and minimize the operation costs and overheads by
enhancing their fleet and operations management using the AI-powered systems. Possible areas wherein
artificial intelligence can be applied in airlines are dynamic pricing, pricing optimization, and flight delay
prediction. This optimize the published fare which are calculated based on the journey features. They are
looking for ways in which they can maximize sales revenue for ensuring flights. Airline companies are also
doing data analytics to analyze the traffic that is happening considering that we are in the middle of the
pandemic.
The Artificial Intelligence is also a great way in developing the customer service to a much better services
that can fully satisfy their customer’s needs. This development may also help for the passengers to have a
better flight experience.
Taking everything into account, Artificial Intelligence is very well-suited for aviation. It helps and improves
a lot of its sectors which can be made a lot easier for future pilots and aviation students to learn, navigate,
manage, and perform their designated duties. It creates a great innovation in today’s present times to solve
problems that cannot be fully comprehended by the human intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is clearly a
big change in the aviation world that is now universally accepted. In the future, this will help a lot in
improving and discovering more ways on how to ameliorate the aviation industry that can benefit future
aviation students in studying this field.
