POST TEST
1.Define mineral, ore, and metallurgy.
Metallurgy is the field of science which deals with the extraction of metals from
ores which are naturally found in the environment. Most of the elements,
especially metals are presently combined with other elements and these are called
minerals.
An element may combine with a variety of other elements to make myriad
minerals but out of them, only a few are viable sources of that metal. Such sources
are called ores.
2. List three metals that are usually found in an uncombined state in nature
and three metals that are always found in a combined state in nature.
The metals which are usually found in an uncombined state in nature are Ag
(silver), Au (gold), and Pt (platinum). The metals that are always found in
combined state in nature are Al (aluminum), Fe (iron) and Pb (lead).
3. Write chemical formulas for the following minerals:
(a) calcite, CaCO₃
(b) dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2
(c) fluorite, CaF2
(d) halite, NaCl
(e) corundum, Al2O3
(f) magnetite, Fe₃O₄
(g) beryl, Be3Al2(SiO3)6
(h) galena, PbS

(i) epsomite, MgSO4·7H2O

(j) anhydrite. CaSO4

4. Name the following minerals:

(a) MgCO3, Magnesium carbonate
(b) Na3AlF6, sodium aluminum fluoride
(c) Al2O3, corundum
(d) Ag2S, silver sulfide
(e) HgS, mercury sulfide
(f) ZnS, Zinc sulfide
(g) SrSO4, Strontium sulfate
(h) PbCO3, Cerussite
(i) MnO2, Nsutite
(j) TiO2. titanium dioxide

5. Chemical tests of four metals A, B, C, and D show

the following results.
(a) Only B and C react with 0.5 M HCl to give H2 gas.
(b) When B is added to a solution containing the
ions of the other metals, metallic A, C, and D
are formed.

(c) A reacts with 6 M HNO3 but D does not.

Arrange the metals in the increasing order as reducing
agents. Suggest four metals that fit these
Descriptions.
A = Copper (Cu)
B = Magnesium (Mg)
C = Zinc (Zn)
D = Silver (Au)
D<A<C<B

6. Discuss the mechanical properties of metals and the test done to metals.

The mechanical properties of metals determine the range of usefulness of the metal
and establish the service that can be expected. Mechanical properties are also used
to help specify and identify metals. The most common properties considered are
strength, hardness, ductility, and impact resistance.

7. Why is there a need for alloys. Explain your answer.

Nowadays, alloys are crucial because combined metals have different properties
than base metals. For instance, steel (one of the most widely-used metals on the
planet) is often an alloy of iron and carbon. Mixed together, raw steel becomes
1000 times stronger than iron alone.

8. Discuss the stress-strain diagram for steel.

The stress-strain curve describes the behavior of steel bars under loads. It is created
by testing steel specimens. A steel specimen is gradually pulled through a testing
machine until it breaks, and stress and corresponding strains are recorded. The
stresses are then plotted along the vertical axis, and as a result of these stresses,
corresponding strains are plotted along the horizontal axis. There are different mark
points on the stress-strain curve that represent various stages that steel specimen
passes through prior to fracture. It is very crucial to understand the stress-strain
curve in order to be able to understand the response of steel bars when subjected to
loads.

When the steel specimen is subjected to load, it behaves as an elastic material

which means the stresses and strains are proportional. But as the load is increased,
the specimen starts to lose its proportionality and ultimately fails or yields. When
the load is increased beyond the yield point, the steel bar goes through stress
hardening and can sustain greater stress, after it reaches the fracture point.
