COE 102 – CHEMISTRY FOR ENGINEERS

I. OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify how oxidation number helps to determine the redox reaction

2. Differentiate the oxidation and reduction

3. Distinguish how redox reaction affects every compound by discovering base and acids

II. LIST OFMATERIALS, EQUIPMENTS AND REAGENTS USED

- Glass
- Coke
- Zonrox Bleach
- Barbecue Stick

III. PROCEDURE

- First, put some coke into the glass

- Second, put a bleach into the glass
- Third, observe what will happened
- Then for the last one, stir with a stick

IV. SKETCH/PHOTO OF THE SET-UP (while doing the experiment)

V. OBSERVATION

- The coke has been dissolved and also observed that there are yellow and orange color before
goes like this

VI. INTERPRETATION AND DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

- The experiment has been proven correct because the combination of the bleach and the coke
turns into a clear just like water

VII. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS (Elaborate your answers)

1. What is an oxidation number? How is it used to identify redox reactions? Explain why, except for
ionic compounds, oxidation number does not have any physical significance.?

- The oxidation number represents the atomic charge if all electrons were transferred. By
determining whether elements have been oxidized or reduced, they are utilized to identify
redox reactions. Because complete transfer of electrons between atoms does not occur in
molecular compounds, oxidation numbers have no physical significance outside of ionic
compounds.

2. All combustion reactions are redox reactions. True or false? Explain..

- True, All combustion reaction are redox reactions, it is because when a substance reacts with
oxygen, it will get reduced and oxygen will get oxidized from o to -2

3. or the complete redox reactions given here, write the half-reactions and identify the oxidizing and

reducing agents:

- Oxidation half-reaction: 4Fē-12ē  4Fe+

- Reduction half-reaction: 60 + 12ē  60z-

- Fe is a educing agent, O2 is an oxiding agent.

- NaBr is a reducing agent, Cl2 is an oxiding agent

- Oxidation half-reaction: 2Br-1 - 2ē  2Br

- Reduction half-reaction: 2Cl + 2ē  2Cl1

- Si is a reducing agent, F2 is an oxidizing agent

- Oxidation half-reaction: Si - 4ē  Si4

- Reduction half-reaction: 4f + 4ē  4F1

- H2 is a reducing agent, Cl2 is an oxidizing agent

- Oxidation half-reaction: 2H - 2ē  2H1

- Reduction half-reaction: 2Cl + 2ē  2Cl1

4. Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent. State which of the following species is least likely to be
produced when nitric acid reacts with a strong reducing agent such as zinc

metal, and explain why: N 2 O, NO, NO 2 , N 2 O 4 , N 2 O 5 , NH 4 1+

- Step 1 of 2

Here we have to explain which of the following species is least likely to be produced when nitric acid
reacts with a strong reducing agent such as zinc metal.

The given species are, N 2 O, NO, NO 2 , N 2 O 4 , N 2 O 5 , NH 4 1+

It is known that nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent and zinc is a strong reducing agent. When this two
react with other than Zn metal will reduce nitric acid hence N will gain electron and the oxidation
number of N must decrease. The oxidation number of N in nitric acid is +5 then the product which will
form must have lower oxidation state than +5.

Hence in order to find out the species which is least likely to be produced when nitric acid reacts with
zinc metal can be obtained by calculating the oxidation number of N in all the given species and the
species which has higher oxidation number than +5 cannot be the product of this reaction.
5. Cite an application of this this topic (Red-Oxl Reactions) in your chosen field as (IE, ECE

or CpE).

- Redox reactions are comprised of two parts, a reduced half and an oxidized half, that always
occur together. The reduced half gains electrons and the oxidation number decreases, while the
oxidized half loses electrons and the oxidation number increases. Simple ways to remember this
include the mnemonic devices OIL RIG, meaning "oxidation is loss" and "reduction is gain."
There is no net change in the number of electrons in a redox reaction. Those given off in the
oxidation half reaction are taken up by another species in the reduction half reaction

VIII. REAMARKS AND CONCLUSION

- In conclusion, bleach can decolorize the color wherein like in our everyday things that we know
that bleach is a chemical that removes the color like in the stain of our clothes wherein based on
our experiment bleach can decolorize coca cola wherein the coca cola turns into white because
of bleach can breaks the chemical bonds of between oxygen atoms in the process known as
oxidation. Chromophores are a group of atoms that absorb or reflect specific wavelengths of
light, giving organic molecules their color. When oxygen molecules are released during this
process, they break the chemical bonds of chromophores. Due to bleach’s ability to oxidize and
break down the color pigments, Coca-Cola becomes colorless.
