Mikrotik Operating System:

- Can be used as a router.

- Can be used as a web proxy server.
- Can be used as a wireless link.
- Can be used as a domain controller.
- Can be used as an ftp server.

Features:

- Mikrotik as a domain controller: we can use Mikrotik as a

server, were clients connect to it by PPPOE protocol connection by
using there own username and password given by the
administrator.
This connection is secured and the physical address of each
network card and username can be captured and saved in the
Mikrotik itself and any trial of logging into the account using the
username and the password but from another physical address is
not allowed.
We can use Mikrotik to make a small ISP by this feature of by the
Static IP method. All what we need is an internet source (gateway)
passing to the Mikrotik server and we can provide internet service
for each customer providing him his own Queue, so if we take
1MBPS connection we can provide more than 20 clients at once
giving a speed of 128 KBPS for each and at once (at the same
time).
Also one of the Mikrotik features other than the ability to control
the Queue of the connection provided to a client, that it provides
each client a connection speed graph of his yearly, monthly,
weekly, daily, and momentary usage of speed of upload and
download speed, he can access it any time he wants by using his
own link u can give after configuring the graph on the server. Also
you are provided by the graph of the real connection consumed by
your server. (A Bandwidth Monitor Graph) and it is accurate and
real.

- Using Static IP Connection: Also we can use all the features

explained up but not by using the PPPOE protocol and username
and password, but by using a Static IP connection, by providing
each client with his own IP. Also physical address of the network
card is kept and any connection from another physical address is
not allowed.
- Firewall: Mikrotik firewall is one of the highest security level
firewalls available among servers, since it is a Unix Firewall, and it
is the easiest to deal with among all other available firewalls.
You can use the Mikrotik Firewall in two ways:
1st: Closing all the ports, and allow only the ports you would like to
allow.
2nd: Opening all the ports, and closing the ports you wouldn't like to
allow.
Available ports to prevent or to allow: Any port, also virus ports,
worms, voice, cam … etc.

- Web Proxy: Mikrotik web proxy is a perfect web proxy in which

you can control your web access. You can prevent certain websites
or prevent any downloaded extensions as: .exe, .zip, .ram, .bat …
etc.
You can make the proxy a transparent proxy, in which any client
whatever he use a proxy in his browser settings or not, he will pass
the server's web proxy in both cases. You can enable the proxy,
disable it, clear the cash … etc.

- FTP: You can make your server accessed by ftp protocol, in where
you can store files and documents, and give security privileges to
certain users to access these data via ftp from anywhere in the
network, or u can make it open to public usage (anonymous
access).

- Mikrotik as a Wireless Link:

Instruments Needed:
1- Wireless PCI card 108MBPS (<30 $)
2- 2.4 GHZ Antenna.

We can use Mikrotik as a wireless link using frequency of more

than 70 channels, starting from 2.3 (2317) channels and ending at
2.5 channels.
The benefit of using Mikrotik in wireless configuration is the
ability to have a high quality connection for far distances reaching
more than 75km. Up to 20km distance connection is available with
low cost materials (<120$) and with ping time (<1ms), while from
20km up to 75 km and above cost about 750 $ and above.
When using Mikrotik as a wireless link, you get benefit at the same
time from its other features as ftp, web proxy, PPPOE server and
static IP server, as a router.
Mikrotik as a wireless link can be used as point to point wireless
connection, or point to multipoint connection and you can hide
your SSID of your link and give it security privileges, and always
trust that using it as a wireless link is the cheapest among all other
available solutions, and is the most effective and reliable among all
them.

- How Can We Control Mikrotik System?

We can do this by using several methods:
1- HTTP Web Interface.
2- Software (user) interface.
3- Telnet.
4- FTP
5- Mac Address Telnet (and it is a unique feature special for
Mikrotik).

- Why We Choose Mikrotik?

We choose Mikrotik because of many reasons:
It is the cheapest solution, most reliable, effective, easy to deal
with, and available solution. Its requirements are so simple:
1- 233MHZ CPU and above (Pentium II and above).
2- 64MB Ram and above.
3- 500MB Disk space hard disk and above.
4- 10-100MBPS PCI network card.

Depending on the above information, we can see that it is the

cheapest requirements among other servers or operating systems
from Microsoft or Linux, and not because it is cheap that means
that it is not reliable or effective, at the contrary, it is the most
reliable and effective solution among them.
It is easy to deal with, when there is many Mikrotik systems on
your network, you can hide the system you want from another
systems, and you can control one system from any point in the
network even if it is not from the same range. (You can control
192.168.1.x from 195.162.20.x).
