General term
When considering a value n, the corresponding nth term is denote by Tn. This is
called the general term of the sequence .
Eg; If the general term of a number sequence is 2n + 3, find the first 3 terms.
First term T1 = 2n + 3
=2x1+3=5
Second term T2 = 2n + 3
=2x2+3=7
Third term T3 = 2n + 3
=2x3+3=9
5, 7, 9, ............
³ Find the first 3 terms of the following sequences.
(1) 3n - 1 (4) 3n + 1
(2) n + 5 (5) 5n - 4
(3) 20 - n (6) 30 - 3n
i. first 3 terms
ii. 12th term
iii. which term is equal to 29
iv. (n +1) th term, in terms of n,
i. T1 = 2 x 1 - 1 = 1 // ii. Tn = 2n - 1
T2 = 2 x 2 - 1 = 3 // T12 = 2 x 12 - 1
T3 = 2 x 3 - 1 = 5 // = 23 //
iii. Tn = 2n - 1
29 = 2n - 1 iv. Tn = 2n - 1
29 + 1 = 2n - 1 + 1 Tn + 1 = 2 (n +1) - 1
30 = 2n = 2n + 2 - 1
2 2 Tn + 1 = 2n + 1
15 = n
Multiple of 3,
3, 6, 9, 12, ......... n
Tn = 3n + 9
Find the common team of each of the number pattern given below
(1) 7, 11, 15, 19, ...........
(2) 8, 3, -2, -7, ............
(3) 4, 7, 10, 13, ............
(4) 30, 27, 24, 21, ............
(5) -5, -3, -1, 1, .............
(6) Sahan is employed in a private company. His first monthly salary is Rs. 20000/=,
From the beginning of the second year onwards, he received an annual salary
increment of Rs. 1500/= per month.
I How much is his monthly salary at the beginning of the second year.
ii. Write separately, sahan’s monthly salary during the first three years.
iii. Write an expression for his salary in the nth year in terms of n.
iv. Find Sahan’s monthly salary in the 7th year, by using the expression obtained
in (iii) above.
v. How many years does it take for him to get a salary of more than Rs. 50000/=
(7) Show that the general term of the number pattern 25, 32, 39, 49, ......
with a common difference is 7m + 18.
(8) Kusal saves money from his salary to buy a mobile phone worth Rs. 35000/=.
He saves Rs. 2000/= in the first month and Rs. 750/= every month thereafter.
