What is noun?
A noun is a word that represents a person, thing,
concept, or place

2. Motivation:

What can you see to the picture?


Can you give me an example of a person, things, place,
animals and events based on the picture?

3. Presentation/ Discussion:

Countable Nouns
These are nouns that can be counted.
They have singular or plural forms.

Examples:
1. Mango is sweet when it is ripe.
2. Mangoes are sweet when they are ripe.

When making a sentence using countable nouns, be careful


with the use of articles and quantifiers.

Articles : a, an, the

Quantifiers: some, many, a number of, a majority of, a


few, several, a large number of, any, a lot of

Take a look at these examples below;


Articles Sentences
a, an, the - An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Mr. Angus is a teacher.
Please get the book on the table.
a is used before countable nouns that starts with consonant
letter.
Examples: a tree a cow a pencil

an is used before countable nouns that starts with a vowel


letter.
Examples: an apple an eagle an owl

the is used to refer to only one which was mentioned


already or is definite.
Example: the ring (that was mentioned earlier or is definite
that it is the ring referred to)

Sentences with Countable Nouns and Quantifiers


I have many friends.
A few employees attended the meeting.
A large number of students were absent yesterday.
He has a lot of toys.
Some of the eggs were broken.

The quantifiers many, a few, a large number of, a lot of,


and some are used with plural countable nouns friends,
employees, students, toys and eggs.

Uncountable Nouns
-nouns which cannot be counted
-also called mass nouns.

Non - countable nouns or mass nouns have quantifiers.


Quantifiers are expressions of quantity.

Examples:
1. Mother puts a spoonful of sugar in her coffee.
2. A larger drop of rain splashed on his umbrella.
3. I don’t have much water left.
4. Put a little sugar in my coffee.
5. He was given a large amount of money.
6. She spilled some of her coffee.
Guided Practice:
The teacher will group her learners into 4.
Choose and write in your English activity notebook the
correct countable nouns to be used in the sentence.

Example:
Wilma goes to (church , churches) every Sunday.
Answer: church
1. The boy hugs his red (pillow, pillows).
2. There are (rooster, roosters) in the backyard.
3. The (telephone, telephones) is ringing.
4. There are two food (weighing scale, weighing scales).
5. A (thermal scanner, thermal scanners) is used to check
the body temperature.

Based on the picture, use the correct non - countable nouns


found inside the box to complete the sentence. Write your
answers in your English activity notebook.

Independent Practice:
Use the correct nouns to complete the sentence. Box the
countable nouns and circle the non – countable or mass
nouns and write your answer in your activity notebook.
Take note of the articles and quantifiers or even the verb to
get the correct answer.
Example:
I saw an egg in the nest.
Celia bought a sack of salt

2. Gina likes to eat a banana.
3. Paul buys a bag for his notebooks.
4. Five sacks of rice are sold daily.
5. A bottle of juice is tasty.
Evaluation:
Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answer
in your English activity notebook.
