Volumetric analysis

Aim: To Prepare 0.05 M Solution of 250mL Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate (Mohr’s salt). Using this
Solution Find out the Molarity and Strength of the Given KMnO4 Solution

Apparatus: 250mL conical flask, Burette, Pipette, measuring cylinder, Funnel, weighing machine,
weighing bottle

Chemicals required: KMnO4, Mohr’s salt, distilled water

Indicator: KMnO4 acts as a self-indicator

Chemical equations:

End point: Colourless to permanent pale pink

Calculations for finding the weight of Mohr’s salt:

Molarity= no of moles of solute/volume of solution in litres

No of moles= mass of solute/Molar mass of Solute

Molarity= 0.05 M

Volume of solution= 250 mL🡪0.25 L

Molar mass of Mohr’s salt= 392 g

Mass/weight of solute= 0.05 x 0.25 x 392= 4.9 gm The mass of Mohr’s salt required to

prepare 0.05 M 250mL standard solution is 4.9 gmProcedure:

1. Prepare 250 ml of 0.05 M Mohr’s salt solution by dissolving 4.9 g of Mohr’s salt in water.
2. Rinse the pipette with the 0.05 M Mohr’s salt solution and pipette out 20.0 ml of it in a washed
titration flask.
3. Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMn04 solution.
4. Add one test-tube (~ 10 ml) full of dilute sulphuric acid to the solution in titration
flask.(conical flask)
5. Note the initial reading of the burette.
6. Now add KMnO4 solution from the burette till a permanent light pink colour is imparted to
the solution in the titration flask on addition of last single drop of KMnO4 solution.
7. Note the final reading of the burette.
8. Repeat the above steps 2-3 times to get a set of three concordant readings. Observation

Calculations:

Formula: M1V1/M2V2=n1/n2

M1= Molarity of KMnO4= ?

V1= Volume of KMnO4=

n 1= no of moles of KMnO4= 2

M2= Molarity of Mohr’s salt= 0.05 M V2= Volume of Mohr’s Salt= 20 mL

n 2= no of moles of Mohr’s salt= 10

Therefore Molarity of KMnO4= _______M Strength of KMnO4= Molarity x molar

mass

____x 158= _____gm/L

Precautions:

1. Potassium permanganate is dark in colour, so always read the upper meniscus. 2. Rinse the
pipette and burette before use.
3. Use dilute sulfuric acid for acidifying the potassium permanganate. 4. Clean all the apparatus
with distilled water before starting the experiment and then rinse with the solution to be taken in
them.

Result:
1. Molarity of given KMnO4 solution is _____M 2. The strength of given potassium
permanganate solution is _____g/L
