STUDY GUIDE
WEEK 1- Introduction to Arnis

Introduction
The activities this week aims to introduce to you the basic Arnis course, the Historical
development of the sport, the code and conduct, panunumpa bilang arnisador, the
mechanics of the game and its nature.

Learning outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Under the history and the development of the sport and its nature
2. Recite the panunumpabilangarnisador
3. Familiarize the rules and mechanics of the sport

Modern Arnis
Is a Filipino martial art that can be performed individually or with a partner using a single
stick or a pair of sticks for striking and blocking; can also be used for self-defense. Arnis
is also known as eskrima and kali, known as a national sport and martial arts in the
Philippines.
Arnis is the Philippines' national martial art and sport, after President Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo signed the Republic Act. No. 9850 in 2009. The Act mandates the Department of
Education to include the sport as a Physical Education course and for the arnis to be
included among the priority sports in Palarong Pambansa (National Games) beginning
2010.
