Course Descriptions 2022-2023

English 10:
This course is a continuation of the Grade 9 syllabus emphasizing the study of language, literature and
composition.  The skills of critical thinking, reading, listening, writing and speaking will be developed.  A variety of
literature selections will be used for the improvement of reading strategies, literacy interpretation and
interpretation.  Literature selections will also serve as models to develop writing skills. 

Math 10 (U.S. Diploma):


This course will cover concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and analysis. Students will be able to
understand the real number system and to use the graphical calculator. The study of functions will include
polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, absolute value, composite and inverse. An introduction of matrices, series and
sequences, quadrilaterals, angles, measures, trigonometry, volume and surface area and pre-calculus. 

Math 10 (Pre-IB):
This course builds on concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and analysis while solidifying and
extending mathematical concepts, problem-solving and procedures. Areas of study will include numbers, number
facts, graphical calculator, computation; patterns, functions and algebra; measurements, geometry, data analysis
and pre-calculus. This course will prepare students for the IB Math courses: Applications and Interpretations (AI) and
Analysis and Applications (AA).

Chemistry (10):
This course presents the basic concepts of chemistry and how they relate to the world around us and everyday
situations. There will be 7 Units to be covered during this course. Atomic theory and structure, elements,
compounds, periodicity of elements, bonding, formula writing, equation balancing, mole concept, energy changes
in chemical equations, Chemical kinetics, and nuclear processes involving radioactive decay and half-life are among
the topics covered. Experimentation, measurement, and reporting are all crucial scientific abilities to learn
throughout the year as part of actual laboratory investigations.

History 10:
This course is a study of the development of mankind.  It traces the evolution of political, social, cultural, religious,
technological and economic institutions from prehistoric to modern times.  The great ideas and actions of mankind
which have shaped the modern world are explored.  

Computer Science 10:


This course will challenge students to think critically and holistically about computer science. Computational
thinking will lie at the heart of the course and is integrated with other topics. This will be supported by other
activities including programming. Other options include: databases, modelling, simulation and web science.

Introduction to Business Management 10:


The course will introduce students to the fundamentals of economics and business. They will study business theory,
market structures, economic institutions, measuring the economy, and the process of starting a business. The
course will also challenge students to critically look into globalization and sustainability issues. The course will draw
on current events to bring relevancy to the topics we will be covering.

Physical Education 10:


This physical education course focuses on the physical, mental, social and emotional development of the individual
in cooperative and competitive settings.  The student is provided with experience in psychomotor skills, movement
and lifetime health related fitness, knowledge, skills and values.  This course will fulfill one of the two physical
education credits required for graduation.

Creative Arts 10:


The visual arts are an integral part of everyday life, permeating all levels of human creativity, expression,
communication and understanding. Grade 10 is a challenging and rewarding year where it will prepare them for IB
Visuals Arts. Students will create a body of work looking at the human form as the subject matter, providing them
with both a theoretical and hands-on experience looking at the three specialist areas of the Department: Digital Art,
Printmaking, and Sculpture.

Instrumental Music/Band 10:


Musicians will continue the great beginning they had in Grade 9 Band! We’ll continue to work on Instrumental
Technique, as well as the fundamentals of music reading and ensemble performance. We’ll do several
performances, including standards like “Mr. B”, the December holiday performance, and expand into jazz,
symphonic pieces and themes from the movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
Beginners are welcome to join this class and learn an instrument!
