factors affecting preferred strands of Grade 10 students in

Iloilo king of Glory Christian Academy when they were

classified as to certain categories. The t-test and One-way

Anova were used as the statistical tool in the analysis of

the data. The level of significance was set at 0.05 alpha

level.

Factors affecting the Preferred Strand of Grade 10 Students


Taken a Whole.

The factors affecting preferred strand of Grade 10

students were determined using mean.

The findings revealed that when they are taken as a

whole, parents’ factor, peer influence and family

occupational background are “moderately affecting” to the

preferred strand of the students, having the mean values of

8.98, 9.53 and 8.60 respectively, which fell under the

arbitrary scale 8.30-11.59.

On the other hand, factors like own desire and economic

consideration are “highly affecting” to the preferred strand

of the students, having the mean values of 13.19 and 11.44,

which fell within the arbitrary scale of 11.60-15.00.

Factors Affecting the Preferred Strand of Grade 10 Students


Classified as to Gender.

Results show that in gender, result showed that all

aspects except own desire “moderately affecting” the

preferred strand of the respondents in both male and female.

As can be seen from the obtained following values: Parents’

factor in male is 9.52 and 8.56 in female; Economic

Consideration in male is 11.33 and 11.52 in female; Peer

influence in male is 9.95 and 9.19 in female and family

background in male is 8.52 and 8.67 in female.

Meanwhile, a noticeable result of “highly affecting”

was revealed in the factor own desire in both male and

female having the obtained mean values of 12.57 and 13.64.

Factors Affecting the Preferred Strand of Grade 10 Students


Classified as to Economic Status.

Gleaning from the table below, it can be seen that,

when classified as to economic status, parents’ factor

moderately affecting income below 10,000 and income between

10,000- 30,000 while income above 30,000 is low affecting.

They can be seen in the obtained mean values of 8.48, 10.00

and 6.50 respectively.

Own desire factor highly affects respondents in all

three categories of family’ income having the mean values of

13.13, 12.90 and 15.00 respectively which fell within the

arbitrary scale of 11.60 – 15.00.

In economic consideration, respondents with income

below 10,000 and income between 10,000-30,000 are moderately

affecting with the mean score value of 11.43 and 11.38 which

fell within the arbitrary scale 8.30 – 11.59. While income

above 30,000 obtained low affecting having the mean score of

8.00.

Peer influence shows moderately affecting on the

preferred strand of the respondents in all the income

categories having the obtained mean values of 9.39, 9.71 and

11.00 respectively which fell between the arbitrary scale

11.60 – 15.00.

Finally, family background in respondents with income

below 10,000 and income between 10,000-30,000 have result of

moderately affecting with the obtained mean values of 8.87

and 8.86 which fell within the arbitrary scale of 8.30 –

11.59 while respondents with family income is above 30,000

is low affecting with the obtained mean values of 8.00 which

then fell within the arbitrary scale of 5.00 – 8.29.

As can be seen from the table below, when the

respondents were categorized as to desired course, the

result revealed that parents’ factor moderately affecting on

the licensed professional with the obtained mean values of

9.00 which fell within the arbitrary scale 8.30-11.29. On

the other hand, the result of low affecting on the

unlicensed professional with the obtained mean values of

8.00 which fell within the arbitrary scale of 5.00-8.29.

In own desire, both categories in desired course were

described as highly affecting having the mean values of

13.17 and 14.00 which then fell within the arbitrary scale

11.60 – 15.00.

In economic status, only licensed professional desired

course is highly affecting with the mean value of 13.17

which fell within the arbitrary scale of 11.60 – 15.00 while

unlicensed professional received low affecting with the mean

score of 8 which fell within the arbitrary scale of 5.00 –

8.29.

In peer influenced, the noticeable results of

moderately affecting were noted in both categories of

desired course with the mean values of 9.25 and 11.00 which

fell within the arbitrary scale 8.30 – 11.59.

Finally, in family background, moderately affecting was

noted in licensed professional having the mean score of 8.62

which fell within the arbitrary scale 8.30 – 11.59 while

unlicensed professional received low affecting result with

the mean value of 8.00 which fell within the arbitrary scale

As can be seen from the table below, parent’s factor

recorded both employed and underemployed received the

moderately affecting description having the mean score of

8.98 and 9.71 which fell within the arbitrary scale 8.30 –

11.59. on the other hand, unemployed category received low

affecting result with the mean score of 8.98 which then fell

within the arbitrary scale of 5.00 – 8.29.

A noticeable result of highly affecting in own desire

were noted in all three categories having the mean scores of

13.6, 13.47 and 12.50 respectively which fell within the

arbitrary scale 11.60 – 15.00.

In economic consideration, both employed and under

employed received the moderately affecting interpretation

having the mean values of 11.40 and 11.18 which fell within

the arbitrary scale 8.30 – 11.59, while unemployed received

a high affecting interpretation having the mean score of

12.33 which the fell within the arbitrary scale of 11.60 –

15.00.

Peer influence in all three categories received

moderately affecting interpretation having the mean scores

of 9.44, 9.76 and 9.17 respectively which fell within the

arbitrary scale of 8.30 – 11.59.

Finally, in family background, only employed category

received a low affecting interpretation having the mean

score of 7.72 which fell within the arbitrary scale of 5.00

– 8.29. On the other hand, underemployed and unemployed

categories received the moderately affecting interpretation

having the mean scores of 11.40 and 11.18 which fell within

the arbitrary scale of 8.30 – 11.59.

Grade 10 Students Classified to Variables with Two-level
Categories

To be able to determine the differences in the factors

affecting the preferred strand of grade 10 students when

classified as to certain variables with two-level

categories, the t-test was utilized. The level of

significance was set to 0.05 alpha.

The findings revealed that when classified to gender

and desired course, all five factors have no significant

difference in the preferred strand of the respondents. Data

showed the t=test values of t=1.250 with sig. (2-tailed)

value of -0.218 and t=-1.284 with sig. (2-tailed) value of

0.205; t=-1.284 with sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.205; t= -

1.284 with sig.(2-tailed) value of 0.205 and t=-0.275 with

sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.784; t=1.284 with sig. (2-tailed)

value of 0.739 and t=336 with sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.64;

t=1.281 with sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.207 and t=0.77 with

sig. (2-tailed) values of 0.477 and t=-0.181 with sig.(2-

tailed) value of 0.823 respectively which values were

greater than 0.05 set alpha level.

To be able to determine the differences in the factors

affecting preferred strand of grade 10 students when

classified as to certain independent variables with three-

level categories, the One-way Anova was utilized.

The findings revealed that all five factors affecting

the preferred strand such as economic status and family’s

occupational background have no significant differences in

the preferred strand of grade 10 students having the

significant values of f=0.325 with sig. (2-tailed) values of

0.961 and f=0.607 with sig.(2-tailed) values of 0.783;

f=0.621 with sig.(2-tailed) values of 0.110 and f=0.486 with

sig. 2(2-tailed) values of 0.888; f=0.856 with sig.(2-tailed

values of 0.549 and f=0.739 with sig.(2-tailed) value of

0.640; f=0.629 with sig. (2-tailed) values of 0.779 and

f=.286 with sig. (2-tailed) values of 0.274 and f=0.856 with

sig. (2-tailed) values of 0.549 and f=0.739 with sig. (2-

tailed) values of 0.640 respectively.
