Overview

COMMUNICATION

The term "communication" comes from the Latin word "communicare," which means "to
share" or "to make common" (E. Weekley, 1967). The process of understanding and
sharing meaning is defined as communication (Pearson, J., and P. Nelson, 2000)

As this definition demonstrates, communication is more than just the transfer of

information. The phrase implies that a message must be successfully transmitted or
imparted, whether it be information, ideas, or emotions.

Furthermore, Alberts, Nakayama, and Martin (2007) define communication as a

"transactional process in which individuals construct meaning via the exchange of
verbal signals in specific circumstances, impacted by individual and social influences
and rooted in culture. Culture is defined as the source of patterns of perceptions,
attitudes, and behavior that a community communicates and passes on as a shared
legacy. As a result, culture often determines the person's context so that they are forced
to choose from the available possibilities in society; as a result, culture offers the
strongest fabric for societal dynamics. Therefore, "culture influences all or almost all
communication interactions."

Three essential components of the communication process:

1. Sender
2. Channel
3. Receiver

Communication as an Academic Discipline

● The discipline of communication is the study of how individuals use verbal and
nonverbal communication to generate meaning in a variety of situations. This can
be from one person to another, or from one person to groups, in a government,
commercial sector, civil society, school, or community environment, to large
audiences across cultures, utilizing a range of channels and media.
Communication's influence on human behavior is also of importance to this field.
● Communication is indeed an academic discipline that studies interpersonal
communication. Interpersonal connections, groups and teams, companies,
communities, and cultures are all built on the foundation of human interaction.
● The goal of communication is to expand one's understanding of interactional
processes and communicative conduct. The field focuses on people's
interactions and ties in both private and public settings, as well as face-to-face
and through various communication technologies.

Importance to Society
● Communication has the potential to play a key role in empowering
progress. Communication processes can equip both women and men to
provide information and knowledge as a basis for change and innovation,
make decisions about their livelihood, and thus increase their overall
involvement in development by enabling a conversation between people
and other sectors of society (Communication in a changing world, 2022).
● Communication is an essential component of human connections. The
exchange of information between communication subjects is at the heart
of the concept of communication. As a result, information is meaningless
without communication. Even at the beginnings of sociality, community
education, communication, and engagement were skeptical
(SupremeEssays.net, 2019).
● Communication is the establishment for dividing data among individuals to
guarantee that everything is perceived and can be followed up on. A
person begins conveying when he begins creating his first commotion in
the demonstration of drawing his folks' consideration. Each feeling that
human beings depict on their appearances, the development of their
hands, the way they look at somebody, and their discourse quickly impart
their plans to other people (Âñûm, n.d.).
● Communication is fundamental. Wherever people want to create mutual
understanding, knowledge, and expertise with how to communicate are
necessary. Communication is defined as the act of passing significant
information from oneself to others who will receive the information they
aim to express. In order for information to be transmitted, both parties
must be on the same page. Because communication allows one individual
to connect with another who requires that knowledge, it is the foundation
of interpersonal interactions (Importance Of Communication In Society |
ipl.org, 2013).

Social Issue and a Mind Map

Freedom of Media
● Rappler: When Maria Ressa, the co-founder and executive editor of the news
website Rappler, and Russian editor Dmitry Muratov were given the Nobel Peace
Prize in October, media freedom and freedom of expression received a
significant boost. For reporting on "drug war" executions and helping to uncover
what Ressa called Duterte's "weaponization of the Internet" to target government
opponents and dissidents, Ressa and Rappler have faced retaliation from the
Duterte regime and its supporters. The assassination of journalists is still going
on (World report 2022: Rights trends in the Philippines, 2022).
● Killing Journalists: Orlando Dinoy of Newsline Philippines and Energy Radio
RM was assassinated in his Digos City home in October. Reynante Cortes, a
radio presenter, was shot and killed by an unidentified shooter as he was leaving
his radio station in Cebu City, in the central Philippines, in July. Cortes' on-air
criticism of local politics and corruption was well-known. Gunmen assassinated
Virgilio Maganes, a newspaper columnist and radio commentator, in Villasis,
Pangasinan, a region north of Manila, in November 2020 (World report 2022:
Rights trends in the Philippines, 2022).
● Red-tagging: Municipal police in Kalinga province, in the northern Philippines,
harassed journalists from Northern Dispatch, a weekly newspaper, in April for
covering an event organized by leftist groups. Authorities later "red-tagged"
journalists from the same newspaper. Bulatlat and AlterMidya, two leftist media
organizations, accused the Philippine military of waging "denial of service"
attacks on their websites in September (World report 2022: Rights trends in the
Philippines, 2022).

How It Can Be Addressed

● Take Action: Take immediate and strong action against any infringement of
media freedom around the world, including press statements, phone calls,
meetings, letters, and targeted sanctions against culprits. This includes speaking
out against violence against journalists and the inability of authorities to identify
and prosecute assailants, as well as limits on media access, website blocking,
and censorship on specific themes (Repucci, 2019).
● Support Social Media Use Amidst Repression: Support social media as a
means of expressing oneself in repressive environments (Repucci, 2019).
● Preserve Media Freedom: Ensure that their activities do not justify or inspire
press freedom abuses. Democratic countries, in particular, have a critical role to
play in preserving media freedom (Repucci, 2019).
