B. Motivation (Engage) method.
How many of you help at home during
weekends?
Describe the two children.
Read this situation:
Every weekend, the children helped their
parents doing household chores. Pamela

finished of it. What part of the house
3
has she finished?
How can we solve this problem?

C. Discussion of concepts (Explore)

Ask the learners to work in pairs to answer
the following problems.
1) What does Pamela do every weekend?
2) Who among you help parents in doing
household chores?
3) What is asked in the problem?
4) What are the given facts?
5) What operation is needed to solve the
problem?
6) What is the number sentence?
7) How will you solve the problem?

D. Developing Mastery (Explain)

Multiplying fractions are just like multiplying
numbers. To multiply fractions, you must
multiply the numerators and then also
multiply the denominators of the fractions to
be multiplied. If the product is in an
improper fraction, simplify it or reduced to
its lowest term.
Example 1:
3 1 3
x =
4 2 8
Example 2:
1 3 3
x =
5 7 35
Example 3:
8 7 56
x =
11 9 99
Example 4:
5 6 30
x =
13 7 91
Example 5:
8 4 32
x =
17 5 85
Cancellation Method can be applied
before multiplying the fractions so that the
product is already in its lowest term. You
can apply cancellation if there is a common
factor in the numerator and the
denominator.
Example 1:
4 10 4 2 8
x = x =
5 11 1 11 11
Example 2:
7 18 7 2 14
x = x =
9 25 1 25 25
Example 3:
8 9 1 3 3
x = x =
15 24 5 3 15
Example 4:
9 6 1 3 3
x = x =
16 9 8 1 8
Example 5:
18 8 2 8 16
x = x =

C. Discussion of concepts (Explore)

Ask the learners to work in pairs to answer
the following problems.
1) What is asked in the problem?
2) What are the given facts?
3) What operation is needed to solve the
problem?
4) What is the number sentence?
5) How will you solve the problem?
To get the answer, we can write the
multiplication equation as:
1 1
1 x3
2 2
Step 1. First, change the mixed fraction to
improper fraction by multiplying the
denominator by the whole number. Then
add the product to the numerator to get the
new numerator. Copy the denominator of
the mixed fraction.

The equation 1 x 3 =N will become,

Step 2. Multiply the numerators.
3 7 3 x 7 21
x = =
2 2 ❑ ❑
Step 3. Multiply the denominators.
3 7 21 21
x = =
2 2 2x 2 4
3 7 21
So, x =
2 2 4
Step 4. Express your answer to simplest
form or lowest term, if needed.
To simplify the answer, change the
improper fraction to mixed fraction by
dividing the numerator by its denominator.
1
Thus, you need 5 cups of milk for the
4
recipe.

D. Developing Mastery (Explain)

Aside from multiplying fractions by another
fraction, we can also perform the following
types: (1) Multiplication of fraction by a
whole number and vice versa; (2)
Multiplication of fraction by a mixed number
and vice versa; (3) Multiplication of whole
number by a mixed number; and (4)
Multiplication of mixed number by another
mixed number.
