As part of peace agreements between the Soviet Union and the United States, Japan
lost its control of Korea and it was divided into two occupied zones: North Korea (USSR)
and South Korea (USA) divided at 38th parallel of latitude.
2. The war began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following
clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea. North Korea was supported by
China and the Soviet Union while South Korea was supported by the United States and
allied countries.
3. - North Korea, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan are compared the same because of
their atrocities against humanity.
- Citizens have no rights as they are controlled by the government.
- Going against the government meant imprisonment and death.
- Therefore we can conclude that the actions of North Korea, Nazi Germany and Imperial
Japan are similar.
4. America wanted not just to contain communism - they also wanted to prevent the domino
effect. Truman was worried that if Korea fell, the next country to fall would be Japan,
which was very important for American trade.
5. Harry Truman announced support for South Korea in repelling an invasion by North
Korea, entering the U.S. in the Korean War.
6. The Chinese felt threatened by the American fleet stationed off their shoreline and
desired North Korea as a Communist buffer state to protect their northeastern provinces
that made up Manchuria.

8. A new border between North and South Korea was drawn, which gave South Korea
some additional territory and demilitarized the zone between the two nations. The war
cost the lives of millions of Koreans and Chinese, as well as almost 40,000 Americans.
9. Along with the border, a demilitarized zone (DMZ) was set up on both sides of the
border. This two and a half mile area would have no military presence from either side,
although on either side of the DMZ, both sides stationed heavily armed troops.
10. This was the first hot war of the Cold War, and in it the United States demonstrated its
continued commitment to containment (the idea that the US would ultimately defeat
communism by containing its spread).
