A multimeter can be a hand-held device suitable for simple fault detection and field service
work, or it can be a bench instrument capable of measuring with extreme precision. They may
be used to diagnose electrical faults in a wide range of industrial and residential devices,
including electronic equipment, motor controllers, domestic appliances, power supply, and
wiring systems.
B. A multimeter is a measurement device that can measure several electrical characteristics at
once. A conventional multimeter can measure voltage, resistance, and current, and is
sometimes known as a volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM) since it has a voltmeter, an ammeter, and
an ohmmeter.
These precautions are applicable to both digital and analog meters.
Clamps measure current. Voltage is measured using probes. An electrical meter with a hinged
jaw allows personnel to clamp the jaws onto a wire, cable, or other conductor at any point in an
electrical system and measure current in that circuit without disconnecting/deenergizing it.
Hard jaws are made of ferrite iron and are designed to detect, concentrate, and measure the
magnetic field created by current flowing through a conductor.
