My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Analysis
B. “There is always a candle burning”(Page where she is in the field outside the
brothel)
5.
In Emil Ferris’ “My Favorite Thing is Monsters”, she connects with the readers
emotions with more than just words. By illustrating the scene along with the quotes from
the characters the reader is able to see what Ferris envisioned when she was
describing Karen and her emotions thorough the story. We follow her as she deals with
school and has to deal with different emotional traumas such as her neighbor dying and
her mother getting sick. When Sonja was with Karen in her garden explaining why her
mother treated her poorly and how she should stay away from her she says “there his
always a candle burning” to symbolize how she could always find the help that she
needs from Sonja and the garden. In conclusion Emil ferris was able to connect the
garden the harsh lights of the brothel with the calming serenity of the Sonja and her
garden.
