Q at Night
Technical Information

1.Introduction
This document describes the 'Q at Night' function of the PV inverter SG3125HV-30, SG3400HV-30, SG3125HV-31,
SG3125HV-32.
This document is intended to be used by the specific addressees. No part of this document may be reproduced or
distributed in any form or by any means, without the prior written permission of Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd.
In order to ensure the stability of the utility grid, the grid operators require the energy producer to support the grid by
generating a certain amount of reactive power; the reactive power is normally provided by Q at night.
For PV power plants, the PV inverters are required to operate as Q at night by using its inherent reactive power
capability; most of the PV inverters in the market would have this function as standard, but only for the daytime when
the PV inverters stay in feed-in-operation. the Q at night function is required as well at night to compensate the
reactive power based on the actual needs in order to support the grid.
The Q at night uses the full-control component IGBT to connect the inverter's main circuit to the grid in parallel
through the inductor, it controls the AC-side current to feed or absorb the set amount of reactive current, so as to
achieve dynamic reactive power compensation.

Here, U̇s : grid voltage; U̇I : Q at night AC voltage output; U̇L : Inductor L voltage (phasor difference between U̇s and
U̇I ). I is the current passing through the inductor, as well as the current absorbed by the Q at night from the grid. By
controlling U̇L , the I can be controlled;
suppose the power loss caused by Q at night can be neglected, the amplitude and the direction of the current
absorbed from the grid by the inverter can be controlled by keeping the U̇s and U̇I at the same phase and
changing the amplitude of U̇I ,.
When U̇I < U̇s, the lagging current voltage is 90°, and it is operating in inductive condition, the Q at night will absorb
inductive reactive power.
When U̇I > U̇s, the leading current voltage is 90°, and it is operating in capacitive condition, the Q at night will
absorb capacitive reactive power.
When U̇I = U̇s and the current and voltage are in phase, the Q at night will not absorb reactive power.

The inverter uses reactive current vector control to cause a phase difference between the inverter output voltage and
the grid voltage, thereby achieving the necessary reactive power compensation. This makes grid access more
friendly and can adapt to future grid system access requirements.
The 'Q at night' function requires the inverter to stay in feed-in operation without DC voltage present, which involves
additional hardware components and software development.
During the 'Q at night' mode, the DC inputs must remain disconnected to prevent the PV inverter from producing a
negative effect on components. The inverter's DC switches have an electric operation function, allowing the inverter
control system to control the DC switches.
Control Unit

The inverter allows the users to activate or deactivate the 'Q at night' function locally on the HMI menu or remotely
via upper PC.
2
Confidential
Step 4: Enable the 'Q-adjust switch' first, then enable the 'Q at night switch'.
Once the 'Q at night switch' is enabled,, the 'Q at night' function is always active until the ' Q at night switch' is set to
be disabled; when the DC input power drops to a preset value for a certain amount of time, the inverter will enter 'Q
at night' mode and compensate the reactive as required.
When the inverter first enters 'Q at night' mode, the DC switches will remain in the closed status. After the inverter
remains in 'Q at night' mode for the preset time period, the DC switches will be opened to disconnect it. This will
avoid unnecessarily opening the DC switch. During this process, the inverter will continue to input reactive power to
the grid according to grid scheduling requirements.
When the inverter is in 'Q at night' mode, it continues to detect whether or not the conditions for feeding the active
power are met, if all conditions are met, it will switch on the DC switches and enter active power feed-in mode.

When Sungrow inverter is working in "Q at night" mode, the inverter supports the utility grid during an instant
grid-voltage drop. In this case, the inverter will stay connected with the grid and wait to restart feeding in reactive
power after the voltage drop or feed in reactive during the voltage drop in accordance with local grid codes. during
the LVRT (low voltage ride through), there must be a certain power supply to keep the inverter active.

Insulation Monitoring and Negative Grounding
Technical Information
Version 1.0
1.Introduction
This document describes the Insulation Monitoring and Negative Grounding used for SG3400HV-30,
SG3125HV-30/31/32,SG2500HV-30, SG3000HV-30,SG3400HV-MV-30, SG3125HV-MV-30,,
This document provides instructions for PV inverter insulation monitoring and negative grounding equipment. It
primarily covers standard requirements, electrical principles, system component selection, system requirements,
and other detailed analyses and descriptions. This document aims to help customers understand the equipment
functions and provide guidance to customers during system design.
This document is intended to be used by the specific addressees. No part of this document may be reproduced or
distributed in any form or by any means, without the prior written permission of Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd.
2.Design Principles
Insulation Monitoring
The photovoltaic system's array insulation resistance monitoring function serves to reduce the risk of electric shock
or fire caused by DC-side ground faults.
For non-isolated inverters, DC-side ground faults form a loop between the fault point and electrical grid, directly
leading to a fault current. Non-isolated inverters must detect the array insulation resistance before connecting to the
grid. If the resistance falls below the threshold, the inverter shall trigger an alarm and shall not be operated
connected to the grid.
For isolated inverters, if the insulation is found to fall below the threshold, the inverter may continue to operate
connected to the grid, but it must continuously monitor the resistance and trigger an alarm.
According to section 4.8.2.1 in IEC62109-2, the minimum value set for the insulation resistance threshold must not
be lower than R=VMAX PV/30mA.
PV inverter insulation threshold value parameters are set according to the IEC62109-2 standard.
For grounded or non-grounded photovoltaic systems, when the ground fault leakage current exceeds a certain
threshold, the inverter will disconnect from the grid and trigger an alarm.
According to the provisions in section 4.8.3.5 in the IEC62109-2 standard, for Sn>30kVA inverters, when the array's
ground fault leakage current exceeds Sn*10mA/kVA, the inverter shall disconnect from the grid within 0.3 ms and
trigger an alarm.
Inverter has a built-in negative functionally grounding + insulation resistance monitoring module, as shown below.

Before the inverter connection to the grid, the control unit issues a priority control signal to DC contactor K1 to open
K1's NC and thereby disconnect the circuit between the negative end and ground, the DC side can be seen as
floating system. At this time, the insulation monitoring units detects the positive to ground resistance R+ and
negative to ground resistance R- relatively. If the value of R+ and R- meets the setting threshold , the control unit will
send a control signal to the DC relay K1 to close K1, the DC side becomes a negative grounding system, then the
inverter connects to the grid.
The threshold of the positive to ground and negative to ground insulation resistance can be set by LCD, the default
value is 50K, and the setting range is 15K-100K. Please refer to the product user manual for specific setting
methods.
After the inverter connecting to the grid, the control unit can calculate the residual current by the negative to ground
voltage and the intentional resistance(this function can be called RCD), and determines whether the inverter needs
to indicate a fault alarm or disconnect from the grid according to the standard requirements.
1) Negative functionally grounding system can only be used on inverters with isolated transformers,at the
same time, an array residual current function (RCD) is required.
2) The RCD device is connected to the DC positive or negative ends to monitor and disconnect ground faults.
If the system is installed with a RCD device, the DC positive or negative ends cannot have another ground point.
3) Installing a RCD device will increase the system's overall AC-side ground potential, so this must be taken into
consideration when selecting the inverter's AC-side components.
For DC 1500V PV systems, the PV- and ground are equipotential and the maximum PV+ ground voltage is 1500V.
2 2
The rms value of inverter AC phase-to-ground voltage is Vrms=: (VDC / 2) + (Uac *1.1) . Uac is the grid's phase
voltage.
Taking the voltages above into consideration when selecting AC/DC lightning protection devices and cables. The
required DC withstand voltage is 1500Vdc and the AC withstand voltage must be no less than 842Vac. The DC
lighting protector must be a 2+1 model and the AC lightning protect must be a 3+1 model.
5.Conclusions
1) Functional ground safety complies with the requirements of the IEC62109-2 standard;
