M2176 - Coastal and Port Engineering

Assigment

A new rubble-mound breakwater is being considered for construction at the Valencia

Port extension. The port is open to any type of vessels, but the breakwater to be
designed will have storage areas and cargo (non-hazardous) handling adjacent to the
breakwater.

The breakwater will be design including a toe berm and a crown-wall on top. It will
be located at a water depth of 30 m, from the datum (port reference level). The toe
berm crest will be disposed at a water depth of -6 m, from the datum. The outer
rubble-mound later will not cover completely the crown-wall seaward face. The upper
berm crest will be designed 1 m below the crown-wall crest and it will be 4 blocks
wide.

The crown-wall will be designed following a L-shaped typology and will include a 6
m-wide rolling access at +4.5 m. The foundation will be disposed +1.5 m above the
datum. The crown-wall crest will be defined attending to functional requirements.
The vertical wall will be 3 m wide.

The wave climate information at the toe of the structure is provided in the annexed
pages for the extreme value long term distribution and the long-term distribution.
The wave climate information provided also contains the statistical relationship
between Hs and Tp. Use the central band fitting for all the calculations.

The maximum astronomical tide in the area is 0.3 m and the maximum storm surge
elevation observed is 0.8 m.

The breakwater is designed considering a 2V:1H seaward slope and a 3H:2V leeward
slope.

Some additional information is provided:

§ The use of quarried rock will be prioritized in the design over the use of
artificial concrete units.

§ Rocks in nearby quarries: maximum size: 5 tons.

§ Assume Tp = 1.2 Tm.

§ The design sea storm is 3-hour long.

§ Densities (Kg/m3): blocks and crown-wall: 2350, quarry stones: 2600, water:
1025

§ Wave propagation coefficient seaside-leeside: 0.1

§ Concrete cubes could be used in the outer seaward slope. Use van der Meer
formulation to calculate the weight of the cubes (Damage initiation: Nod =
0.3).

§ Use also cubes if necessary for the toe berm. Gerding formulation will be used.
Damage initiation will be considered.

§ Seabed slope: 1/100.

§ The functional design will be analyzed for two situations, corresponding to the
serviceability limit state (SLS) and the operational limit state (OLS),
considering only the minimum operability. In the first case (SLS), it is
considered that there will be no damage to the pavement behind the crown-
wall. In the second case (OLS), it is considered that there is no risk to
pedestrians, thus optimizing access to the breakwater under normal
conditions.

Solve:

1. Determine the design requirements for this work according to the indications
set by the ROM. (0.5p)

2. Determine the design storm at the breakwater to study for ULS, SLS and OLS.
In the OLS analysis, only the minimum operational criteria will be considered.
(1.5p)

3. Determine the wave height used for the following failure modes by identifying
the formulation to be used in each case (1p):

a) Extraction of the outer layer armour units (seaward)

b) Extraction of the toe berm armour units
c) Sliding and overturning of the crown-wall
d) Extraction of the outer layer armour units (leeward)

4. Determine the weight of the units, number of layers and thickness of the outer
main layer seaward, toe berm, inner main layer leeward, secondary layers
and core. (2p)

5. Determine the crest elevation of the upper berm and crown-wall, attending to
the functional analysis. (2p)

6. Calculate the crown-wall stability for sliding and overturning. (2p)

7. Make a scale drawing of the breakwater (1p)
