Bangladesh is one of the world's most densely populated countries, with a population of about

170 million people. Bangladesh has made considerable progress toward poverty reduction,
sustained economic growth, and continuing human development since obtaining independence
from Pakistan in 1971. However, the country confronts several obstacles.

Twenty percent of the population (about 34 million people) remains impoverished. The majority
of Bangladesh is only 10 meters above sea level, leaving it very vulnerable to the climate issue.
Storm surges and floods induced by extreme weather frequently devastate huge parts of
Bangladesh, particularly coastal areas.
