Presentation Outline – Planning (includes objectives)

Two goals I want my presentation to convey to my audience:

1. Gain knowledge about steps one can take to enhance their emergency preparedness.
2. Understand the importance of a Threat and Hazard Identification Assessment, and the
three steps of this process.

1) Goal one: gain knowledge about emergency preparedness

a) Describe graphics for September’s National Preparedness month by GEMA: first graphic

“Make a Plan,” shows icons of a house during a severe weather incident, importance of

making a plan for evacuation and plan for pets during an emergency. Second graphic

“Build a Kit,” the icon shown has different items needed for an emergency kit such as

food, money, clothing. Third graphic is “Low Cost No Cost Preparedness,” which is

described through mentioning free templates and downloadable worksheets from GEMA

website on topics such as: home insurance, savings accounts, and ways to prepare for an

emergency at no cost. “Teach Youth about Preparedness,” was the final graphic, describe

the importance and how to engage children in learning about emergency planning.

Describe activities that teach children how to respond in emergencies and for example, in

the instance of a fire.

b) Emergency Management Association of Georgia sign in sheet (Area 3), show the sign in

sheet created for the meeting.

c) Social Media Fentanyl Post

i) Describe how the DEA is working against drug traffickers and new form of fentanyl,

which is brightly colored and may represent sidewalk chalk.

d) Questions for supervisor Discussion:

i) Resources/awards for grants that superviser has been looking out for in the past 5

years?

ii) What are some areas of emergency preparedness that are overlooked/underestimated

by the community and stakeholders?

2) Goal two: importance of THIRA and the 3 steps

a) First process of hazard mitigation by identifying and assessing risks in a community.

b) Establishing risks are valuable when determining what capabilities a community has in

terms of being able to identify vulnerability gaps.

c) Data gathered from THIRA is the initial steps in completion of the National Preparedness

System and used for updating a Hazard Mitigation Plan.

d) Display the Social Vulnerability Index and evaluation within project.

3) Three step process:

i) Identify Threats and Hazards- List Threats and hazards of concern

ii) Give threats and hazards context- context descriptions and impact numbers

iii) Establish capability targets- capability targets based on standardized target language
