Section A : General Comments

High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the following guidelines are adopted as
good working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding
exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially important to
keep cool those surfaces of the equipment, which will come into direct contact with the material
itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary shading as
necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application is a continuous
process.
Equipment
It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement.

Protective clothing : Protective overalls

: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask

Preparation equipmen : Stiff wire brush / Proprietary blasting equipment

: Air Compressor
Mixing equipment : Slow speed, hand held drill (400 - 500 rpm)
Fosroc mixing paddle MR2
Application equipment : Fosroc GX gun

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed applicators.
This ensures that repairs are completed satisfactorily so that the long-term performance of the
materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the materials themselves Fosroc is also able
to offer technical assistance and training, either on-site or at its Training Centre in Dubai.

Section B : Application Method

1.0 Joint Size

1.1 Prior to commencing application procedures, confirm compliance of sealing slot width to
recommendations of BS 6093.

1.2 In case the joint width does not confirm to the aforesaid standard requirements, saw cut the
edges of the substrate to increase the width size. In trafficked areas, the maximum width of
expansion joints should be limited to 30mm.

2.0 Joint Preparation

2.1 Clean the joint surfaces by grit blasting.

2.2 Blow the sealing slot with dry, oil-free compressed air.

2.3 Pack the chosen expansion joint filler tightly into the joint and at the required depth to provide
the seal dimensions.

2.4 Insert a bond breaker and caulk tightly into the base of the sealing slot. This will prevent the
sealant from adhering to the base of the slot. Note, if Fosroc Expancell chord or Fosroc
Hydrocell XL, the need for a bond breaker is eliminated.

3.0 Priming

3.1 Fosroc Primer 20 should be the primer.

3.2 Use a clean dry brush and apply the primer onto the sealing slot surface.

3.3 The primer must be allowed to be touch dry but not tack-free before commencing application
of the sealant. Repriming will be required, if the primer has become free of surface tack.

3.4 For sealing asphalt surfaces use Nitoflor FC130, this must be allowed to dry before
continuing.

3.5 Then the Nitoflor FC130 is over primed with Primer No. 20.

3.6 If asphalt is less than four months old undertake pull off adhesion tests, if the results are
satisfactory then proceed

4.0 Mixing

4.1 Pour the entire contents of the curing agent into the large base component tin.

4.2 Mix the contents using a hand held slow speed drill, fitted with Fosroc MR2 mixing paddle.

4.3 After mixing for one minute, stop the mixer and scrape around the top of the tin to remove
any unmixed curing agent.

4.4 Mix for further 3 minutes or until the material is thoroughly mixed.

5.0 Application

5.1 Load the material into a Fosroc GX gun by removing the nozzle and cap and pulling back the
plunger rod.

5.2 Replace the nozzle and commence application.

5.3 In wider joints of 25 mm and above, the mixed sealant may be poured directly from the tin by
bending the side to form a pouring lip.

5.4 Apply the mixed sealant into the sealing slot so that the finished level of the seal is recessed
below the trafficked surface as specified.

6.0 Cleaning

6.1 Clean all equipment, immediately after use, with Fosroc Solvent 102.

Section C : Approval and variations

This method statement is offered by Fosroc as a ‘standard proposal’ for the application of Colpor
200. It remains the responsibility of the Engineer to determine the correct method for any given
application.

Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for approval, in
writing, prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or liability for
variations to the above method statement under any other condition.
