Skim the following text and answer questions number 6 – 10

While “Hallyu”, the Korean wave, has become a global phenomenon for decades, Chinese pop
culture has grown rapidly in prominence over the past couple of years, attracting more and more
global fans. Getting used to people talking about K-pop music and Korean dramas all the time, I was
surprised to see more and more people starting to watch and discuss Chinese dramas. As an
experienced viewer and enthusiast of both Chinese dramas and Korean dramas, I will discuss some
major differences that I noticed between them.

Chinese dramas are often pretty long, with 30-60 episodes, and may even go up to 80. Each episode
is often 30-45 minutes. Compared to this, Korean dramas usually have 16-20 episodes, each lasting
60-90 minutes. While many Chinese dramas are aired 2 episodes per day, Korean dramas are usually
aired 2 episodes per week. So it can be a torture to wait for K dramas to get updated compared to C
dramas. With complicated plots and multiple parallel storylines, C dramas usually need more time to
complete a story and often tell stories at pretty slow pacing. In comparison, K dramas, well known
for their compelling plot twists, tend to tell stories at faster pacing and with a well-knit plot. So K
dramas might be better at constantly attracting the audience’s attention than C dramas.

Chinese dramas and Korean dramas are good at portraying different genres. While C dramas are well
known for historical/costume and fantasy genres, K dramas are famous for modern-day and
romance genres. C dramas are overall better at the historical/costume genre and the fantasy genre.
Most of the top Chinese fantasy dramas are set in ancient China and thus fall into the costume genre
as well. In comparison, Korean historical dramas tend to put less effort into set design and art
design. Not only in visual design do Chinese historical dramas do a better job, they are also overall
more sophisticated and compelling in plot. But K dramas definitely have their strengths – they are
overall better at modern-day and romance genres. Korean modern-day romance dramas are overall
better at storytelling as well as shaping characters.

While K drama stories are mainly written by professional screenwriters, most of the top C dramas
nowadays are adapted from novels, which are called “Cultural IP (Intellectual Property)” in China.
Chinese streaming platforms and entertainment companies are competing against each other to buy
the intellectual property of popular novels, while professional screenwriters are having a hard time
selling their stories. This is because popular “IP” novels have already got a large enough fanbase, and
their quality has already been proven by the market. So, from investors’ standpoint, those “IP”
novels are often more worth investing than original screenplays.

The production systems of K dramas and C dramas are also pretty different. K dramas are mostly
shot live, which means that a drama is still filming as it starts to go on the air. The script is not
finished in advance, so the screenwriter and the director can change the story accordingly
depending on the audience’s expectations. This production mode makes the audience’s voices
heard, but there are risks – the over-intervention of their feedback may sometimes screw up the
story.
