Reading Logs:

Directions: The purpose of this reading log is to help you better understand the texts,
main ideas, key points, and relevant quotes so that you can more effectively integrate
these ideas into your writing and essay.

Each week, please complete the reading logs for the texts you select. You will share your
completed reading log each week.

We will complete the first reading log together as a whole class as a model/example.

Title of text: “Love Is Medicine for Fear”

Author: Arthur C. Brooks

Main ideas (1-2 sentence summary of the main idea(s)) of the entire text:
The way to overcome fear is the opposite emotion of fear, which is love instead of brave.
Key points/important details:
1. according to the research, in more than 10 years Americans were living under the fear.
2. In ancient time, people found that love can neutralize fear, which has been proved by
modern neuroscience.
3. the feeling of fear is crated by amygdala, which makes people feel unhappy. However,
the “love molecule” can inhibit the reaction of amygdala so that people will not feel the
threaten from environment.
4. Although the world is becoming more and more difficult for living, the true problem
is people are lacking of love. People are so lonely that they are accumulating anxiety.
5. Some ways to have more love in the life: telling others about your fear, telling others
about your love, to be braver to show yourself to strangers and love your enemies.
6. Better life needs people to against their instincts.

When people are finding a romantic relationship, try to give up the logic and follow the
heart(emotion).
Key points/important details:
1. According to research, many people are using online dating, which is
relationshopping. However, this works awful because people’s decisions are
always affected by emotion.
2. According to the research, people tend not to show their actual preference in the
real dating than their imagine, because temporary emotion will change their
thoughts
3. Although the research above may seem negative, the emotional control can also
be positive, like to break through the affections from parents.
4. To avoid the hot-cold empathy gap, people can ask others about their bis. In this
way, they can avoid the “hot” but undesirable situation. Also, listing a list of
desirable qualities of partners and check them calmly

1. When scanning the brain of lovers, researchers found that romantic will enhance
the level of activity of an area in brain that rich in dopamine.
2. Many detailed feelings when people falling in love are caused by different
chemicals
3. The level of activity of heart will influence the instant of feeling feelings.
4. Falling in love will lower the serotonin levels, which means the level of activity of
brain will become lower when in love, the logic will be less useful.
5. Many factors will influent the sexual orientation.
