ENGINEERING MECHANICS Tutorials- Thrust Bearings

Q1. A vertical shaft 150mm diameter rotating at 1000rpm rests on a flat end foot step bearing.
The shaft carries a vertical load of 20kN. Assuming uniform pressure distribution and
coefficient of friction equal to 0.05, estimate the torque and power lost in friction.
(Ans. 50 Nm,523.5 W)

Q2. A thrust shaft of a ship has six collars of 600mm external diameter and 300mm internal
diameter. The total thrust from the propeller is 120kN. If the coefficient of friction is 0.15
and speed of the engine is 100rpm,find the power lost in friction at the thrust block,
assuming (a) uniform pressure (b) uniform wear (Ans. 43.98 kW,43.98 kW)

Q3. A vertical screw with single start square threads of 50mm mean diameter and 12.5 mm
pitch is raised against a load of 10kN by means of a hand wheel, the boss of which is
threaded to act as a nut. The axial load is taken up by a thrust collar which supports the
wheel boss and has a mean diameter of 60mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.15 for the
screw and 0.18 for the collar. If the tangential force applied by each hand to the wheel is
100N, find suitable diameter for the hand wheel. (Ans. 1.122m)

Q4. The cutter of a broaching machine is pulled by square threaded screw of 55mm external
diameter and 10mm pitch. The operating nut takes the axial load of 400Non a flat surface
of 60mm and 90mm internal and external diameters respectively. If the coefficient of
friction is 0.15 for all contact surfaces on the nut, determine the power required to rotate
the operating nut when the cutting speed is 6m/min. Also find the efficiency of the screw.
(Ans.0.277kW, 14.4%)

Q5 A vertical two start square threaded screw of a 100mm mean diameter and 20 mm pitch
supports a vertical load of 18kN. The axial thrust on the screw is taken by a collar bearing
of 250mm outside diameter and 100mm inside diameter. Find the force required at the
end of a lever which is 400mm long in order to lift and lower the load. The coefficient of
friction for the vertical screw and nut is 0.15 and that for the collar bearing is 0.20.
(Ans.1423N,838.3N)
