Lecture on BASKETBALL (KVS preparation)

ORIGIN
• Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Springfield,
Massachusetts.

• Dr. Naismith was a college professor who wanted to create a game that his
physical education classes could play inside during the long winters.

• The first games used peach baskets nailed to the wall for rims. The first ball
used was a soccer ball.

• In 1893, he replaced the peach basket with iron hoops and a hammock-style
basket.

WORLD HISTORY
• Introduced on Dec 1891, International YMCA Training School , now known as
Springfield College, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

• Demonstrated in St louis 1904 olympics

• The association, FIBA was founded in Geneva on 18 June 1932, two years
after the sport was officially recognised by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC)

• Basketball was introduced as an official game in the 1936 Berlin Olympic


Games.

NBA- Pro League

• The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a


professional basketball league in North America.
• The league is composed of 30 teams
• National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949

FIBA
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA - Fédération
Internationale de Basketball) is an association formed in 18 June
1932.

The National organizations which governs the sport of basketball


around the globe.

Originally known as the Fédération Internationale de Basketball


Amateur (hence FIBA),

In 1989 it dropped the word amateur from its name but retained the
acronym.

INDIAN HISTORY
• Thomas Duncan Patton, a missionary from YMCA introduced the game to the India

• In 1930 played for the 1st time

• In 1934 . the first Indian National Championship for men was conducted in New
Delhi

• In 1936 the first Indian National men’s team was named as Young Cagers.

• the 1965 Asian Basketball Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

• Qualified for 1st and last time in 1980 Mexico Olympics

BFI- INDIA

• The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) is the governing and


controlling body of basketball in India.
• Founded in 1950
• Present president – K. Govindraj
• The national team of India is also known as the ′Young Cagers
• Poonam Mahajan was the president (and also the first female
president) of Basketball Federation of India

MATCH DURATION
• The game shall consist of 4 periods (quarters) of 10mins.
• 1st + 2nd period = 1st Half-----halftime----3rd + 4th period = 2nd half
• 10mins:2mins:10mins::15mins::10mins:2mins:10mins

MATCH DURATION 3X3

• 1O mins of game or 21 points scored by any team whichever


occurs first.
• 1 min extra time in case of tie.
• 30 secs timeout.

Timing Violations
3 SECONDS • an offensive player cannot be in the “key” for more than 3 seconds

5 SECONDS • pass, shoot or dribble within 5 seconds

• cannot take more than 8 seconds to move the ball from their back
8 SECONDS court into their front court

14 SECONDS • after offensive rebounf only 14 secs to attempt a shot

24 SECONDS • a team have 24 seconds in which to attempt a shot

• Johnson Basketball Test – 1934 reliability- 0.89
• To assess the general playing ability of basketball players.
• This test consists of three (3) items of basic skill which are described
below: -
• i) Field Goal Speed Test
• ii) Basketball Throw for Accuracy
• iii) Basketball Dribble Test
