DESIGN PRINCIPLES
AND ELEMENTS
EMPHASIS

importance or value given to a part of the

text-based content
Appropriateness

how fitting or suitable the text is used for a

specific audience, purpose or event
Proximity

how near or how far the text elements from

each other

when two things are closely related bring

them close together
Alignment

how the text is positioned in the page

left, center, right or justified

Organization

conscious effort to organize the different text

elements in a page

ensures that while some text elements are

separated from each other, they are still somehow
connected with the rest of the elements in the
page
Repetition

consistency of elements

unity of the entire design

repeating some typefaces within a page

Contrast

creates visual interest

two elements are different from each other

Denotation and Connotation
In deconstructing text information, denotation and
connotation matter.

These are two different approaches in understanding

given texts.
Denotation

The literal interpretation of ideas

Actual definition of a word provided by dictionary or

obvious interpretation of a phrase or a sentence.
Connotation

refers to the ideas, associations or the feelings

that are connected to a certain word

Example: "black sheep of the family"

FORMAL AND INFORMAL TEXT INFORMATION

documents/contracts
FORMAL AND INFORMAL TEXT INFORMATION

Informal Information

- basically unsocial

- highly opinionated and subjective

- Notes, SMS text messages

VISUAL MEDIA

materials, programs, applications and the
like that teachers and student use to
formulate new information to aid learning
through the use, analysis, evaluation and
production of visual images
TYPES OF
VISUAL
MEDIA
Photography
is the art, application, and practice of creating
durable images by recording light, either
electronically by means of an image sensor, or
chemically by means of a light-sensitive material
such as photographic film.
Videos

Videos convey useful visual information in a

matter of minutes, making them for viewers who
don't have time to read a long text or statements.
Screenshots
screenshots can illuminate the software user
experience by showing readers exactly what the
product has to offer. Screenshots are appropriate
for social media posts and ads, as well as landing
pages.
Infographics

infographics conveniently package important

information in a manner that is easy to digest
and share.
Data Visualization (Charts and Graphs)

Data Visualizations such as graphs and charts can

communicate complex information in a manner
that is intuitive and easy to understand.
Comic Strips/Cartoons
comic strip, series of adjacent drawn images,
usually arranged horizontally, that are designed to
be read as a narrative or a chronological sequence.
The story is usually original in this form.
Memes
Memes are fun because they allow internet
users around the world to share inside jokes
and quick messages.
PURPOSE
OF VISUAL

Purpose of Visual Information
gain attention

VISUAL
DESIGN
ELEMENTS
Line - describe a shape or outline. It can create texture and
can be thick or thin.

Shape - usually a geometric or organic area that stands out

from the space next to or around it, or because of
differences in value, color, or texture

Value - the degree of light and dark in a design. It is the

contrast between black and white and all the tones in
between.
Texture - the way a surface feels or is perceived to feel.
Texture can be added to attract or repel interest to a
visual element.

Color - determined by its hue (name of color), intensity

(purity of the hue), and value (lightness or darkness of
hue)

Form - a figure having volume and thickness

VISUAL
DESIGN
PRINCIPLES
Consistency
- of margins, typeface, typestyle, and colors
is necessary especially in slide
presentations or documents that are more
that page
Center of interest
- an area that first attracts attention in a
composition
- This area is more important when
compared to the other objects or elements
in a composition.
Balance
- a feeling of visual equality in shape, form,
value, and color
- can be symmetrical and evenly balanced,
or asymmetrical and unevenly balanced.
Harmony
- focuses on how all visual elements are
held together
- brings together a composition with
similar units
Contrast
- offers some change in value creating a
visual discord in a composition
- shows the difference between shapes and
can be used as a background to bring
objects out and forward in a design
Directional Movement
- A visual flow through the composition
- Can be the suggestion of motion in a
design as you move from object to object
by way of placement and position
Rhythm
- a movement in which some elements
recur regularly
- like a dance, it will have a flow of objects
that will seem to be like the beat of music
Perspective
- created through the arrangement of
objects in two-dimensional space to
look like they appear in real life
