Accommodation
Finding a place to live can be challenging in a
popular university city like Groningen. In the
Netherlands, educational institutions do not
provide housing. We do reserve accommodation
with housing providers, but the number of rooms
is very limited. Finding a place to live is primarily
your own responsibility. Please take this very
seriously and start looking for a room at least
five months in advance.
The SSH
Students can apply for furnished accommodation through
SSH, an organisation that acts as an intermediary in finding
(temporary) accommodation for international students. SSH’s
international student houses have furnished rooms, most of
them with shared facilities. In each student house, there is a
residence assistant. He or she is your first contact before you
arrive in your room and will welcome you in the building as soon
as you arrive. The availability of rooms is limited and you are
encouraged to apply as early as possible. You can rent a room

Housing in Assen
Several programmes offered by the Institute of Engineering are

Private ma​rket
You can also search for a room on the private market. This can,
for example, be the room of a Dutch student subletting his or
her room to go abroad, a room in a student house owned by a
real estate agency or a studio apartment owned by a landlord.
On the private market you may be able to rent for a period
longer than 12 months.
There are several housing agencies in Groningen that can assist
you in looking for a room. They offer furnished and unfurnished
rooms. Most agencies will ask for a registration fee and a
mediation fee of approximately one month’s rent once you have
accepted the room. There are also several websites where
you can search for a room online. The costs will be lower than
searching with the help from an agency, but please be aware that
these organisations do not have an office in Groningen and do
not act as an intermediary. For a list of agencies and websites,
