Biochemistry

What is Biochemistry?
- Biochemistry is defined as the study of chemical substances found in living
organisms and the chemical interaction of these substance with each other

What are the two biochemical substance groups?

- Biochemical substance is a chemical substance that are found within the living
organism. Biochemical substance is divided into two groups, the bioorganic and
bioinorganic substances.

How would you differentiate the two biochemical substance groups?

- Bioorganic substance includes carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acid
while the Bioinorganic substance it contains water and other inorganic salts. The
difference between these two is that bioorganic has carbon while the bioinorganic
do not have.

Give at least two functions of Carbohydrates.

- There are a lot of functions of carbohydrates and these are the two functions of
carbohydrates.
1. carbohydrate oxidation provides energy
2. Carbohydrates form part of the structural framework of DNA and RNA
molecules.

Define stereoisomers.
-Stereoisomers are isomers that have the same molecular and structural formulas but
differ in orientation of atoms in space.

Define Oxidation
- Oxidation is defines as the removal of electrons and reduction as the gain of
electrons.

Define Chiral center.

- Chiral Center is the handedness-generating carbon atom and is an atom in a
molecule that has four different groups bonded to it in a tetrahedral orientation.

Give an example of monosaccharides.

- Monosaccharide is also knows as simple sugar. An example of monosaccharide
are glucose (dextrose), fructose, galactose, xylose and ribose.

How would you apply biochemistry in your daily living?

- Biochemistry has a lot of benefits in our lives. Having the knowledge about
biochemistry makes us understand the substance and the content of the food
that we take. Because of biochemistry there are a lot of discoveries and
improvement when it comes to medical fields which benefits not only me
but also other human kind as it is now more develop which makes it easier
for us to attend the proper care that we need.
