Introduction
Edir Macedo's effort in running his Church, is a great example of understanding the
importance of change management and the impact of effective change management.
Based on real-life events, the movies; Nothing to Lose and Nothing to Lose part 2
was constructed, and the main theme of the movies was to portray what challenges
Edir Macedo, a Brazilian bishop, faced while establishing his Church called The
Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. The movies were directed by Alexandre
Avancini, and it falls under the biography and drama genre. Nothing to Lose Part 1
was released in 2018, and part 2 was released in 2019. When it comes to the type of
change management was reflected in the movie, cultural change is the type of change
that can be strongly associated with Nothing to Lose, and the approach that can be
identified from Edir Macedo's behaviour and actions points toward the change
approach called the “theory O”. This is because Edir Macedo from childhood was a
very stubborn person, he questioned, challenged, and tried to make people around
him act based on what he wanted, however, when he got himself associated in
religious preaching he focused mostly on the human side of the people, and he
focused on increasing the capability of his Church.
Plot Summary
The movie Nothing to Lose is an outstanding demonstration of coping with
challenges and changes. The movie reflected upon the life of Edir Macedo, who was
born with a birth defect that halted him from moving his hands and fingers properly.
Due to this malformation, he was mistreated till his adulthood by peers and by co-
workers. He was ironically a non-believer of GOD, but he gained trust over the idea
of GOD when he saw that his sister, who was heavily suffering from Asthma, was
fully recovered by hearing the prayers of a bishop of a church. This was the major
turning event that got him to attend Church, and he devoted himself fully to the

Church, which affected his relationship with his girlfriend and his work life. Edir
felt that he had a desperate need to help people, and this led him to get himself into
being a bishop. However, the journey from being a priest to a bishop was very
challenging for Edir since he had to leave his job, cut off ties with his friends, had
to fight with other priests and bishops in Brazil who became envious of his success,
had to go to jail and also had to deal with the misconduct of his co-workers who
tarnished his and his Church's image.
Public Reaction
However, despite all the positivity portrayed in the movies, a negative reaction could
be seen when we look at the IMDB ratings. Part 1 has a rating of 2.3/10 based on
23,000 ratings from viewers, and part 3 has a rating of 3.1/10 from 660 viewers.
Most of the reviews pointed out the movie to be propaganda to artificially create a
good image of Edir Macedo. The movie lost its credibility even more due to being
funded by Edir Macedo himself. The public, in general, in IMDB ratings, has stated
that the movie is propaganda of the Universal Church for acquiring more funds from
people by providing misleading information on Edir Macedo.

tone, and submissive body language towards Edir showed how much she supported
Edir.
The cinematography was brilliant because of the usage of light and dark
backgrounds based on situations. Whenever the movie came into the part which
involved conspiracy, sadness or any kind of negative emotion, the movie ensured a
dark background, whereas, when there was a moment of joy or success, a lighted-up
background was used.
Conclusion
What impressed us the most about Nothing to Lose is the relationship between the
caption and the story; because It showed a man who has devoted and lost everything
to help people in need. However, one of the scenes that did not meet the message of
the movie was in part 2, where Edir was seen living a lavish life. Although, at the
end of the movie, it was stated how many people Edir helped through his Universal
Church, this particular cinematography, from our personal view, was responsible for
creating a bad image for Edir. Overall, the movie, for us, felt like a motivational
movie, and the best audience for this movie will be the people who seek motivation
and thrill.
