Studies are one of the most important requirements in high school. We completed
three research papers before graduating from high school. It was very difficult, time
consuming and stressful, but it was very rewarding because it gave us enlightenment.
Completing a research paper gave us answers and solutions.
Our first study was about preparing a chocolate cake from all purpose flour fortified
with soy flour in order to make inexpensive, highly nutritious food and to determine the effects
of high levels of soy flour on taste, textural, aroma, and color attributes. This discusses about
the difference between the chocolate cake with pure all-purpose flour and chocolate cake
fortified with soy flour. Sensory evaluations of the product were done, descriptive and
acceptability of the product was also achieved using 9-Point Hedonic Scale. Sensory analysis
of fortified chocolate cake containing up to 50% of soy flour indicated that the color and aroma
attributes of the product was not significantly affected while the taste and texture of the
product slightly differ compared with control without soy flour. Generally, this study showed
that highly nutritious and cheap chocolate cake can be made with up to 50% of soy flour
without adversely effect on color, aroma, taste, and texture and should result to great
acceptability of soy-based food.
The second study was entitled “Students Attitude and Performance in Science
Research.” It aimed to assess the attitudes of the students towards Science Research find out
significant relationship between performance and attitudes of the students towards Science
Research subject. This study used the Attitudes towards Research Scale to assess the
attitudes of 60 randomly selected students 15 from each year level from grade 9 to grade 12.
This scale consisted of 32 items having 5 constructs: Research Usefulness, Research
Anxiety, Positive Attitudes, Relevance to Life, Difficulty of Research. We collected their 1ST
semester final grades for the assessment of the relationship between attitude and grade. Data
was analyzed using Pearson correlation and t-test. The results of the study show that, overall,
the attitude of the students have a neutral attitude towards Science Research. It indicates that
your approach in Science Research in terms of difficulty and nervousness can negatively
affect a student’s performance and can be a potential factor for performance in Science
Research. Moreover, it was shown that students at secondary level is taking research and
usually tend to view research negatively and regarded as difficult. However, an understanding
of these attitudes is necessary to help instructors facilitate the learning process of their
students, by creating a positive attitude towards Science Research.
Our third study investigates the experiences of students from Central Mindanao
University Laboratory High School who is a child of a broken marriage in order to further
understand his situation. A Narrative case study research design was used in the conduct of
the study which involved one female participant and one male participant. The participants
were subjected to a series of semi-structured interviews and Focused-Group Discussions.
Results show that the separation of the participants’ parents had made them encounter
various heart-breaking challenges which drove them to learn things in the hard way and face
them independently. And when a marriage ends, it introduces a lifetime of challenges for a
child. Also, there are major psychological shift brought by the separation to the children. They
perceive things differently especially on their parents and elements that requires their trust
and commitments; and the separation also has impacts on a child’s academic performance,
but this does not mean that a child could not perform well at school. Moreover, friends and
peers, relatives, and the society plays a vital role in helping a child to its way to resiliency and
the child wants to obtain a support system that will endure its way; and finally, with the
persons they live together with today, they were able to regain the concept of having a family
which paved a way for them to be resilient into the overwhelming phenomenon their parents
made them experience.
The researches that we explored were from varying fields, it shows that research is
broad and is vital in order to get through different challenges. When face-to-face classes
started, I have noticed that a lot of nursing students live far from Central Mindanao University.
Some were from Surigao, Zamboanga and other locations outside Bukidnon. Most of these
students are lodging in Musuan, Maramag and can only go home occasionally. These
students need focusing because studying away from home is another challenge for them. I
like to dive into their well-being and quality of life away from home, their academic and social
difficulties and their homesickness.
