Poem: COURAGE, COURAGE, COURAGE

I. LET’S KNOW WORDS
1. Curse - a wish that something terrible would happen to
someone.
2. Whimper - feeble sounds to express unhappiness
3. Struggle - to try very hard to do something
4. Victory - an act of defeating an enemy/ opponent
5. Devise - to invent a new way to do/find something

II. State whether the following statements are true or false.


1. We should always curse our friends.
2. We whimper when we are happy.
3. There’s no victory without struggle.
4. One should gain victory by cursing others.
5. We can always devise different ways to reach success.

III. Answer the following questions.


1. What does the speaker mean when he says, “Though you whimper and
whine, still the end must be met”
The speaker says one cannot escape from his battle in the mid way because
one has no choice than to face the very end of the battle.

2. Whose victory will pay for his pain according to the poet?

According to the poet, the one who fights the good fight would be rewarded
with his due reward for all the pain he has gone through.

IV. Let’s devise the poetic devices!

Alliteration is the repetition of the consonant or vowel sounds at the beginning of


words.

1. Mark the alliteration in the given poetic line.

“Though you whimper and whine, still the end must be met”

V. Bring out the rhyme scheme of stanza four.

Never change the battle by curse or regret -D

Though you whimper and whine, sTill the end must be met -D

And who fights a good fight, though he struggle in vain -E

Shall have many a victory to pay for his pain -E

So take your reverse as part of the plan -F

Which god has devised for creating a man. -F

Rhyme scheme for the stanza is DDEEFF.
