HOW REAL-TIME 3D TECHNOLOGY IS BENEFITING BUSINESSES

WHO IS THE REPORT FOR?

This study, produced by Forrester Consulting and commissioned by Epic Games, is for those
seeking to understand where the business benefits lie in adopting real-time tools—and why
strategic decisions for the long term should be made with this technology in mind.

It also takes a high-level look at the breadth of industries that are now leveraging real-time
workflows, probing into the reasons for adoption and the business advantages gained.

If you’re new to game engine technology and looking for an overview of how it’s transforming
processes and outcomes, this is the study for you.

WHAT IS A GAME ENGINE?

Throughout this report, we refer to 3D game engine technology. A 3D game engine is a software
development tool designed for the creation and display of real-time interactive content; initially
for video games and interactive experiences, now also for many other applications. Very simply,
game engines are used to create environments that you can interact with in real time. These can
look, sound, and behave exactly like the real world due to core components of the technology like
physics, graphics, audio, and logic. Unreal Engine is the game engine developed by Epic Games.

Game engines allow for an unparalleled level of interactivity because they render visuals in real
time. Real-time rendering is the translation of a scene into display pixels for instantaneous
playback at speeds such as 24, 30, 60, and 90 frames per second. In contrast, the offline rendering
technology that has been traditionally used, for example, to create linear film and television
content may take minutes or even hours to produce each frame.

Video games are the best-known example of real-time rendering: when you press “right” on your
controller, your avatar instantly moves right. But more than this, your actions don’t just influence
what your character does—they influence what happens in the scene itself. When you fire a
rocket launcher at an oncoming car, it crashes and explodes: real-time rendering brings a level of
interactivity not possible with traditional rendering.

Across multiple industries today, game engines are used to create immersive, interactive 3D
environments and applications. By bringing CG models into these digital spaces, filmmakers can
create virtual replicas of sets, automakers can create interactive car configurators, and architects
can walk through building designs before a single brick is laid.

HOW REAL-TIME 3D TECHNOLOGY IS BENEFITING BUSINESSES

INTRODUCTION
Back in 2018, Epic Games commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct an independent survey
about real-time rendering across media and entertainment, manufacturing, and architecture.
That study uncovered a significant number of firms planning to try out real-time rendering and
put it into production over the following year.

Since then, the use of real-time tools has come of age across industries. Firms have moved
beyond the experimental phase and are now using the technology as a standard part of
their pipeline.

Game engines are used to deliver the visuals you see on shows like The Mandalorian and Super
Giant Robot Brothers, they drive the human-machine interface systems in cars running on the
road, and they’re used to visualize buildings before they’re built.

With the market maturing, we thought it was a good time to take another look at the lay of
the land.

Forrester surveyed companies that have already integrated real-time tools into their day-to-day
process to find out why they made the decision to adopt the technology, what they’re using it for,
and what benefits they’ve seen. In this study, we refer to this group as users.

Forrester also interviewed companies who are looking into real-time technology but are yet to
adopt it—we refer to this group throughout as non-users.

The firms surveyed span multiple industries including media and entertainment (M&E);
architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC); automotive and manufacturing; and training
and simulation (T&S).

The results of the survey paint a picture of significant change in almost every phase of work
across these verticals.

HOW REAL-TIME 3D TECHNOLOGY IS BENEFITING BUSINESSES

OVERVIEW
Four years ago, the companies Forrester Consulting polled that were on the cusp of trying
out real-time technology cited some key drivers for adoption. Those included the desire
to improve their bottom line, provide interactive experiences to customers, and increase
employee satisfaction.

The findings in our latest study indicate that companies who took the plunge and adopted
real-time tools have had these expectations met—and exceeded.

KEY INSIGHTS
This data implies some intriguing trends:

1 There’s a growing desire for immersion when it comes to assessing

designs: 2D/3D static imagery and video are no longer the go-to.
Businesses are increasingly interested in providing 3D interactive
immersive experiences, like virtually walking around a future
building’s floor plan and getting a sense of how the space flows.

2 Creators want tools that remove the technical barriers to creativity

and make the process as fluid, natural, and fun as possible. The
process of creating realistic digital humans is a great example
of this—with the MetaHuman framework, the time it takes has
drastically dropped from months to minutes.

3 Real-time technology is seen as a way to modernize companies—

by improving processes for greater efficiency and better results;
by saving time and money; by increasing collaboration and
interactivity; and by appealing to a modern workforce and attracting
the best talent.

4 Nearly three quarters of users recognize the benefits of taking a

single digital asset and reusing it across their entire pipeline, from
design to manufacturing, marketing, and advertising, and for use
in simulated environments. Think not only about the cost savings
for this, but also the creative opportunities you could capitalize
on. With the growing demand for interactive 3D experiences, the
ability to reuse assets takes on a whole new significance: CG
assets created in the design process can be used in virtual worlds,
giving them a whole new raison d'être. Forward-thinking brands like
Balenciaga are already experimenting with this.

20
THE BIG PICTURE

way we sell, market, and interact with
products, but how companies structure their
organizations to meet the needs of their team
members and stakeholders.”

BUSINESS ADVANTAGES
Many firms now recognize that using real-time technology gives their business a competitive
advantage. The ability to complete a project in a fraction of the time taken using traditional methods
significantly reduces costs. Collaborating with stakeholders in a highly iterative and interactive
environment lowers the risk of design misunderstandings. With technology driving change across
industries at an exponential rate, companies adopting real-time tools today are future-proofing their
business for tomorrow.

The magnitude of this trend is evident in that it’s not confined to one specific sector or industry—
we’re seeing the same evolution happening across multiple industries and multiple phases of work
at the same time.

Major automotive firms like BMW are integrating the technology wholesale, from design to
manufacturing to marketing, bringing cost savings and time efficiencies to every part of the
automotive production pipeline.

In film and TV, real-time technology is the backbone for a whole new method of filmmaking: virtual
production. These cutting-edge techniques are now used regularly to enhance creativity and in
some cases improve the bottom line for production, on everything from TV series such as Star Trek:
Discovery to Hollywood blockbusters like John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.

And AEC firms have been front runners when it comes to recognizing that real-time environments
provide a more effective way to collaborate with stakeholders and make design decisions earlier
in the process. We’ve seen the adoption of real-time tools right the way through the industry, from
global practices like KPF to smaller firms made up of just one or two people.

MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT

Real-time technology is providing a competitive advantage for media and entertainment (M&E)
content creators.

By leveraging game engines and real-time workflows, film and television professionals are able to
transform their entire process, pulling traditional post-production tasks into the flow of live production
and enabling once time-consuming changes to be made, experienced, and iterated on in real time.

Real-time tools are the core technology behind virtual production: a filmmaking technique that
bridges the divide between the virtual and physical in a way that enables creatives to treat the virtual
world no differently than they would the physical world—all while working in real time.

In broadcast and live events, real-time workflows power the augmented reality (AR) visuals, motion
graphics, video walls, inserts, and virtual sets that are enabling producers to blend CG and live action
to create magical moments out of thin air.

The technology has led to significant leaps forward in many different areas of media and
entertainment production:

Visualization: Scenes and sequences can be mapped out and explored in accurate 3D space literally
from the onset of pre-production, refining and fine-tuning the visuals all the way through to principal
photography, enabling filmmakers to involve their heads of department early on as they experiment
with different shots and storytelling techniques.

28
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Digital humans: Realistic digital humans used to take months to create. Now, tools like MetaHuman
Creator are bringing that down to mere minutes.

In-camera VFX and LED stages: In-camera VFX is a virtual production technique that leverages
LED walls to render virtual backdrops for a stage in real time, providing an ultra-realistic
environment—including accurate lighting—for actors to perform within. This technique provides a
much more immersive method of filmmaking than using traditional green screens and enables the
capture of high-quality shots in camera and on set.

Real-time animation: Game engines allow for more iteration and offer the ability for filmmakers to
interact with animated stories in a similar way they might when shooting a live-action story, giving
them the freedom to explore their shots as they would on a physical set with real actors. Ultimately,
this opens up storytelling in animation to a wider demographic of filmmakers.

Broadcast and live events: From singing competitions on TV enhanced with mind-blowing live
visual effects to graphical overlays to wow sports fans, real-time technology is taking live events
and broadcast experiences to the next level. For brands, the technology has increased potential
audience sizes by an order of magnitude. When Madison Beer performs a real-world concert, the live
audience is limited to the capacity of the physical venue and to the limits of the real world. When she
performs in the virtual world, the live audience expands into the millions and the experience has no
limits—special effects that may be prohibitively expensive in real life become an option, for example.

REAL-TIME ANIMATION ON MUSH-MUSH & THE MUSHABLES

La Cabane updated the production process of their international Emmy®-nominated animated
series Mush-Mush & the Mushables to a real-time pipeline.

Rumblings of game engines and the possibilities of real-time technology had long intrigued them—
so much so that they started toying with the idea of making a switch, and conducted experiments
to see if one of the engines could bring real-time benefits to Season 2.

Together with their new CG studio partners Shards CGI, who now specialize in Unreal Engine, La
Cabane made their way to a more efficient and eco-friendly pipeline. Since then, they’ve seen a
90% reduction in rendering time, and just as drastic cuts to the project’s electricity consumption,
render farm usage, and air conditioning needs.

“It’s amazing when you can iterate quickly, and not have to wait for hours to see the result of your
render,” says Romain Trimaille, CEO and Head of CG at Shards CGI. “That alone gives us a lot of
flexibility in the workflow and also creates more comfortable work conditions for our team. It’s
harder to get frustrated when everything is so immediate; plus, having so much info and detail in
front of you really guards against re-dos further down the line.”

So what does Unreal Engine add to Mush-Mush?

36
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

The team uses it as part of a Blender pipeline that sees the layout, lighting, and final-frame rendering
of the project performed in Unreal Engine. By using Unreal Engine for the layout, La Cabane and
Shards CGI have been able to anticipate any issues with lighting and rendering during pre-production,
improving efficiency, and avoiding the need for significant re-rendering of frames when artistic or
technical issues arise later in the process.

This also means the Director, Joeri Christiaen, is able to choose camera angles that already account
for the light’s direction and shadows, achieving the best photography for a scene while also dodging
potential light and shadow-related issues later on.

“Unreal’s internal reference system is powerful and gives us a lot of flexibility, enabling us to rapidly
iterate between different versions of our shading, lighting, and rendering,” says Trimaille. “And the
drastically reduced render times are another big advantage. On Season 1, final images were coming in
at 50 minutes a frame; we are hardly at three minutes for Season 2, which means we can spend a lot
more time on creative quality and introduce more subsurface scattering for added detail.”

The more they worked, the more the team realized they could apply these quality improvements to
previously rendered elements, including the series’ opening sequence.

“We saw a chance to push the quality even further, while still preserving the look of the show,” says
Perrine Gauthier, Producer and Founder at La Cabane. “Now, the render is crisper, the colors are even
more vibrant, and the forest is more alive than ever thanks to Unreal’s environment abilities.”

Production is still ongoing for Season 2, with compositing slated for this summer, and the first episodes
being finalized by the end of the year. To get the full story on how Unreal Engine’s real-time capabilities
supercharged the creative process on La Cabane’s charming children’s show, read our Spotlight article.

40
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

PRINCIPAL AREAS OF USE

Companies in the automotive and manufacturing industries are using real-time tools
for a range of tasks:

are using the technology to build applications to aid in assembly and manufacturing-
for example, giving factory employees 3D visualization tools.

are leveraging the tools for real-time video production with virtual landscapes and objects.
This includes the use of virtual production techniques that combine live-action filming and

enables companies to spatially visualize data; prepare and practice for real-world scenarios;
and conduct remote, real-time training and collaboration.

41
HOW REAL-TIME 3D TECHNOLOGY IS BENEFITING BUSINESSES

KEY INSIGHTS
1 Interactive, human-scale digital replicas that can be experienced rather than
merely viewed give designers a better idea of what a finished product will
look and feel like, making it easier to spot issues and make improvements.

2 Real-time technology enables more people in an organization to have input,

even if they aren’t technically proficient. Instead of trying to verbally describe
complex ideas or explain them using a mathematical model that only a
handful of people can understand, you can do it visually with a game engine.

3 Game engines can provide a single visual development platform where

all your data lives, enabling you to manage the entire production life cycle
from ideation to post-launch marketing materials in one place. Because
everything is in one environment that is accessible from anywhere, teams
from all over the world can collaborate on projects. If the perfect new
hire for your project is based in London but you’re in San Francisco, they
don’t have to relocate—making it far easier to onboard the right talent at
critical moments.

4 The adoption of real-time tools in automotive is being driven from the

ground up. Developers and designers want to work with tools that minimize
creative limitations, and the fast, powerful workflows enabled by real-time
technology provide this.

5 Real-time technology provides a huge benefit to automotive and

manufacturing companies by enabling them to better collaborate,
particularly in the design phase of a project. There are a number of aspects
of Unreal Engine that support this type of workflow:

a Unreal Engine integrates a multi-user editing feature that enables

developers to work together on a single project file in a shared
editing session.

b No additional software is required to collaborate (as long as everyone

works in the engine). Users see changes others make as soon as they
are applied.

c Users leveraging different platforms can collaborate on a single project

at the same time.

ROLLING OUT REAL-TIME TECHNOLOGY ACROSS BMW

The BMW Group has embraced real-time technology to an extent that few other major automotive
makers have, leveraging Unreal Engine across departments from design and production planning
to sales.

With the engine’s powerful real-time workflows at their fingertips, designers and engineers at the
BMW Group can now assess vehicle designs together in minute detail in a virtual environment.

This collaboration can take place from sites around the world, with the participants interacting
and working together as they would in a multiplayer game. Real-time technology has similarly
transformed manufacturing at the company. Using Unreal Engine, production processes can be
tested out in a virtual assembly hall before being set up in the real world, to ensure they are safe
and efficient.

44
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

For BMW’s customers, real-time technology completely changes the car purchasing experience.
Now, they can personally configure photorealistic vehicles in an Unreal Engine-powered
configurator and assess them from any angle in a range of different virtual environments.
They can even sit in the driver’s seat of the virtual vehicle to try it out before they buy.

The VR and AR capability that real-time technology like Unreal Engine provides is effecting
sweeping change across the BMW Group. In the dealership, it’s about the customer seeing their
future car. In the design engineering phase, it’s about seeing the car that will be on the street
three or five years later.

When it comes to production planning, VR is a powerful tool for harvesting the knowledge
of employees who work on the factory floor day in and day out. Show them what their future
workspace will look like, and they’ll spot problems that might otherwise be missed. For example,
they might point out that placing a box in a slightly different spot will make screws easier to
reach, shaving seconds off their work process each time.

The BMW Group also uses AR for assembly training. In the past, training car assembly workers
meant an experienced person had to stand next to the trainee and take them through the
assembly process. Now, trainees can learn solo in AR, where they wear a mixed reality headset
and have each step of the manual displayed to them as they go through the process. This not
only frees up the experienced worker, but also ensures that all new workers are getting the
same training.

Similarly, salespeople on the dealership floor now have more tools at their fingertips when
it comes to selling a car. Using the BMW Group’s Unreal Engine-powered Emotional Virtual
Experience (EVE) VR system, vehicles are configured, animated, and swapped into different
virtual environments—and then an image or video is emailed to the potential buyer so they can
show their friends and family.

Cars are no longer purely mechanical entities; they are increasingly a hybrid of software and
hardware. In the future, computers will play an even greater role. And it won’t be possible to
design and test these elements purely in a hardware mock-up—technologies like game engines
will be required.

Viewed through this prism, the BMW Group’s wholesale adoption of real-time technology like
Unreal Engine is clearly a strategic initiative. It places it in an enviable position to conceive,
design, and manufacture the vehicles we’ll be driving tomorrow.

Find out exactly how the different departments at BMW leverage Unreal Engine to enhance
creativity, save time, and improve ROI in this article.

ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING,
AND CONSTRUCTION
From slashing months from the design process to helping firms win public support for
projects, real-time tools are revolutionizing how architectural designs are communicated
and stakeholders kept informed.

Game engines enable architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals to bring
future designs to life so that they can be experienced today. By producing accurate digital
representations of unbuilt architecture projects, it’s possible to communicate concepts to clients

KEY INSIGHTS
1 Real-time technology improves efficiency across the archviz pipeline
by reducing the time taken to create high-fidelity rendered images
and animations.

2 Respondents to the survey also report that the technology can help
employees be more productive across the various development
phases, which is a key consideration in complex projects where a
multitude of different teams and disciplines need to contribute to
decision-making.

3 The complexity of AEC projects is only growing. Stakeholders need

to understand projects that span kilometers and are split across
dozens of BIM files due to their size. Game engines are designed to
handle vast, open worlds and can assemble the various puzzle pieces
of a massive project into a single coherent experience, which can
be explored in real time and in immersive detail. This creation of a
digital replica can be expanded to become a digital twin as the project
becomes operational.

4 Firms are stepping beyond pencil drawings and CAD designs,

using real-time technology to create high-fidelity animations of
unbuilt buildings or interactive walkthroughs where you can explore
the design like you would in a video game, or even to provide the
opportunity to experience the design in immersive VR. Think of all
of the money that can be saved with the ability to do this and catch
costly mistakes before a single bag of concrete is ever poured.

5 The metaverse is set to be big business, and the virtual worlds it will
encompass will be packed full of digital architecture. Game engines
enable architects to future-proof their position in the market and give
them new opportunities for growth.

BUILDING THE FUTURE: A LOOK AT EPIC’S TOOLS FOR AEC

Unreal Engine and Twinmotion are the two tools at the heart of Epic’s offering for AEC.

Twinmotion is a fast and easy 3D visualization tool. Bringing CAD and BIM files into the tool takes
just a couple of clicks. Designed for those who lack technical experience, anybody can pick up
Twinmotion and begin creating images, videos, and even VR experiences.

When you need to go beyond this, it’s easy to import from Twinmotion into Unreal Engine using the
Datasmith Twinmotion Importer plugin. With Unreal Engine’s powerful features at your fingertips,
you have the open-ended flexibility and creative freedom to truly differentiate your projects.

With the Twinmotion Importer, the story doesn’t stop with Twinmotion or the architectural
teams. The storytelling can continue with digital technology teams, visualization teams, and UI/
UX developers, helping to create a bridge between architects and other parts of the business.
Everything including digital twins, virtual collaborative platforms, XR experiences, immersive sales
configurators, and more becomes possible.

Enabling firms to start projects in Twinmotion and switch them to Unreal Engine at any point in
their development means that creativity and ideas are not locked away in black boxes that serve
limited purposes.

52
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

The core premise of real-time technology is that having immediate feedback on creative choices—
or the ability to look at many more scenarios in the same amount of time with stakeholders—
greatly accelerates the decision-making process. Real-time tools unlock the opportunity to be
more creative or more efficient at solving problems.

Creating digital replicas of built projects is a starting point for enhancing them for other purposes,
such as producing an interactive sales configurator that puts the decision-making in the hands
of the stakeholder. By providing a high-fidelity experience of design aesthetics for customers
to explore, the digital replica becomes “alive” and an emotional attachment to the experience
becomes possible. Customizing a scenario to exactly the way it will look when built eliminates
confusion and delays in the purchasing process. For example, homebuyers can click a button and
explore how different color countertops look, or see how much light the living room gets when the
sun rises or sets.

Once you have invested in a digital replica, it can become a launching pad for diverse efforts
ranging from public engagement with an interactive experience, to a digital twin for operational
efficiencies, to a virtual destination that transforms people’s relationship with a brand or a project.

ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS TURNS TO TWINMOTION FOR

EARLY DESIGN STUDIES
One of the world’s best-known architectural firms, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is also among the
most innovative. ZHA has long incorporated VR visualization using Unreal Engine throughout its
design process. Now, it has also started using fast real-time tool Twinmotion to quickly iterate on
ideas and communicate them to stakeholders.

ZHA has a reputation for experimental design, in keeping with the boundary-pushing ethos
of its eponymous founder. When you’re conceiving an idea that’s completely outside the box,
the challenge lies in how to convey it in a way people can understand. The ability to effectively
communicate the idea early on makes it easier for others to get the creative vision behind it.

ZHA regularly looks into new technologies that might help to improve its design process and better
facilitate that communication. That spirit of exploration led the firm to Twinmotion.

54
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

“With new tools like Twinmotion, real-time becomes accessible and mainstream,” says designer
Marko Margeta. “The benefits of using Twinmotion for the designers are the simplicity of the
interface, the playfulness with which you can articulate your scenes, and not having to worry about
all the technical aspects that real-time usually brings, like lightmaps, PBR workflows, or other
technical details.”

These advantages have quickly seen the tool become a firm favorite at the practice. “The designer
can spend seven hours a day on the design and then it's just one hour to easily present and
communicate his idea to management—and later to the client,” says Margeta.

Those presentations to the client are now a lot smoother thanks to Twinmotion Cloud, which
enables anyone to access a Twinmotion project via a web browser on any computer, tablet, or
smartphone from any location without downloading or installing anything—ideal for sharing work
for review with clients in remote locations, and from work-from-home settings.

“One hurdle we had in the past was that we would often need to bring a PC with us to the client's
presentation, just to be able to run the project in real time,” says Margeta. “And that's where
Twinmotion Cloud helps us, because we don't need to worry about the PC any more.”

Now, the team can just upload their project online for rendering in the cloud, then stream it back
and show it on the local machine. “This helps us not worry so much about hardware limitations,”
explains Margeta. “Everything's happening online. The project manager can access the model,
review it, and immediately give you the feedback anytime, from anywhere.”

ZHA has also readily embraced the Twinmotion Importer for Unreal Engine. This highly requested
functionality enables teams to start a project in Twinmotion and finish it in Unreal Engine. Anyone
can easily work with Twinmotion to develop the basic idea and when they reach the limits of
Twinmotion, pass that project over to Unreal Engine to take it further.

“Early design studies always work great with Twinmotion, but as soon as a project reaches a
certain threshold of complexity where it may need to have more customized, streamlined data flow
or more sophisticated presentation methods, that's where we switch from Twinmotion to Unreal
with the Twinmotion Importer,” says Margeta.

TRAINING AND SIMULATION

Game engines are starting to redefine the way simulation applications are created. Our study
revealed that users and non-users share a common view that acceleration in content creation,
development, and deployment is driving growth in the adoption of game engine technology.

The perceived return on investment is not just about money and time saved—it’s also recognized
in terms of reaching the next level of realism and immersiveness. And in areas where thorough
on-the-job training would present too much of a risk—military combat, for example, or medical
surgery—real-time simulation with a game engine provides a way to run trainees through a wide
variety of realistic scenarios, as many times as necessary. Surgeons can practice operating on
all ages and body types, and military trainees can practice any and all emergency responses until
they've got them down cold.

Game engine technology is an important part of the current and the future strategy for
simulation creators.

The top three benefits of using a game engine in simulation:

Time savings - Many vendors that supply real-time training systems to the military,
for example, are banking on game engines to create lightweight, low-cost applications
that can train dozens or even hundreds of recruits at a time.

Increased interactivity - With the advances in game engines in recent years—

particularly the increase in realism—it is becoming impossible to ignore the many ways
real-time simulation can improve on traditional means of training.

Cost efficiencies - Users can gain a return on investment by streamlining

areas like employee training, resulting in greater safety, less waste, and a more
efficient workforce.

KEY INSIGHTS
1 Users and non-users of game engines perceive the technology as
fundamental to the future of training and simulation, with around
three quarters of each group agreeing that game engines are very
important to the future of their company. This illustrates the overlap
between high-fidelity games and simulation. The most advanced
game engines are inevitably the most powerful tools for simulations:
the bleeding-edge of what the games industry is doing enables
simulation firms to take services and safety to the next level.

2 Companies are harnessing the power game engines for a wide

range of different use cases. This speaks to the flexibility and
limitless creative options that real-time technology affords: it
provides the perfect sandbox for virtual experimentation. Simulation
firms can test a myriad of specific scenarios for clients with ultra-
realistic terrains in a completely immersive environment.

FLYING WITH AR: IN-FLIGHT AVIATION TRAINING WITH RED 6

How do you train for a dogfight at 50,000 feet? Traditionally the U.S. Air Force has looked to on-
ground virtual reality simulators, and also to in-the-air practice battles between compatriots, but
neither one can completely prepare a pilot for an actual encounter with the enemy.

Enter an in-flight augmented reality system from AR platform company Red 6. With the system, a
pilot wearing a customized AR helmet and visor takes flight in an aircraft equipped with a Windows
10 PC, a few sensors, and Unreal Engine.

Through the AR visor, the pilot is able to see both the actual environment and one or more
computer-generated enemy aircraft projected in stereoscopic 3D. The enemy plane moves just
as a real one would, giving the pilot realistic experience with threats without any actual danger to
himself or the aircraft.

62
REAL-TIME TOOLS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Such a system was once thought to be impossible. While flight simulations aren’t new, the fact
that it’s in the air running on a pilot’s helmet, and that the view and movements are so realistic, is a
breakthrough for fighter pilot training.

According to Nick Bićanić, Founder and Chief Science Officer at Red 6, traditional military head-up
displays can have an extremely narrow field-of-view, and sometimes show only one color for one eye.

“With the Red 6 system,” he says, “when pilots go up there and see a 105-or-more-degrees field of
view, full color, daylight-visible binocular system, and the aircraft that they're seeing synthetically
isn't actually there, but it feels like it is and it's behaving like it is, they come down and they go, ‘That
was amazing. I want this yesterday. How soon can we have it?’ “

In addition to on-ground VR simulators, the Air Force has also used live, in-flight practice battles
to train fighter pilots. But such training is extremely costly—each pilot needs hundreds of hours in
flight, which means simulated adversaries need to get into the air for those hundreds of hours, too.
This can bring expenses for fuel and logistics to $60,000–$90,000 per hour, eventually adding up to
billions of dollars per year.

Then there’s the risk of collisions or other mishaps inherent in such an exercise. “It's a very
dangerous business when you're operating at high speeds, high g-forces, and you're doing close
passes,” says Daniel Robinson, Founder and CEO of Red 6.

On top of it all, such training doesn’t achieve optimal results. “Seeing two pilots up there flying and
fighting, you’d think they're both getting great training,” remarks Robinson. “The reality of it is, if
someone is simulating being an adversary aircraft, they are very much constrained.”

Between the risks, the expense, and the limited effectiveness, it was clear that a new solution was
needed. An AR-based solution ticks all the boxes: it delivers complete and repeatable training, it
costs less, and most importantly, it’s much safer.

Being ex-military themselves, the team at Red 6 is in a good position to know what the Air Force and
other branches are looking for. “The Air Force was very conscious of the fact that they had a gap to
fill, but they had no idea that it was possible to fill it,” says Bićanić. “They told us that they'd been
looking for a solution like this for 10 years. And they love it. They want it integrated into as many Air
Force aircraft as possible, as quickly as possible.”

And what do pilots think of the system? “The reactions we've been getting from pilots have been just
incredible,” says Snyder. “They hopped out, they just looked up and said, ‘How the heck did you guys
do that? We want it now.’”

INTO THE METAVERSE

Across M&E, architecture, automotive, and simulation, there are clear trends towards interactivity
and immersion in production processes. These trends parallel the broader technological trend of
consumers spending more time in immersive, interactive virtual worlds. At the core of both of
these stories is real-time technology.

With commerce and audiences moving inexorably into virtual worlds that are built on real-
time platforms like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox, there’s a whole new frontier of opportunity
for business.

Real-time workflows to improve day-to-day processes and ROI are just the start. We're heading
for the era of transmedia assets—the ability to take a single digital asset and reuse it across
an entire pipeline, from design to manufacturing, marketing, advertising, and finally for use in
simulated environments.

The physical version of products may often have a digital counterpart in virtual worlds, enabling
you to express yourself in both realms. Film studios that build vast CG worlds as backdrops for
their stories could reuse them for location-based experiences, promotional shots and videos, or
maybe even spin-off video games.

73
HOW REAL-TIME 3D TECHNOLOGY IS BENEFITING BUSINESSES

Digital versions of real-world buildings may populate these virtual worlds. You'll be able to drive a
CG version of the car you drive on the road in the digital sphere.

In short, the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds are blurring. Game engines will
be the bedrock on which all these experiences and capabilities are built. It follows that companies
which invest in real-time technology today are investing in the future of their business.

HOLOGRAMS AND FLAMES: RTFKT REINVENTS SNEAKERS

FOR THE VIRTUAL WORLD
A queue of teens one hundred long eagerly awaits the release of a unique, must-have sneaker.
With holograms, wings, mirrors, and belching flames, this is a sneaker drop like no other.

That’s because instead of waiting outside a physical store, these kids are waiting in a queue online
to get into the virtual world of Decentraland.

Their new purchases will never be slipped onto physical feet to walk real pavements and
sidewalks—instead, they’ll be worn by their owners' digital avatars in video games or collected as
part of a digital investment portfolio.

These are some of the tentative first steps towards the metaverse, in which our digital identities
will become as important as our real world identities.

75
HOW REAL-TIME 3D TECHNOLOGY IS BENEFITING BUSINESSES

RTFKT is a key player in the exciting new digital fashion space. It has built a reputation for
itself as the ‘digital Supreme’—an elusive, next-gen hype-maker that creates CG sneakers and
collectibles. Its products are bought by collectors and traded on different online platforms, as well
as worn in different proto-metaverse worlds such as Decentraland, Sandbox, and Cryptovoxels.

You won’t see these sneakers advertised on TV or splashed across a magazine, however. Instead,
they’re revealed to the world on Instagram Lives or holographic screens at pop-up streetwear
events, showcased in Neuromancer-esque landscapes.

With their forward-looking approach and background in gaming, it makes sense that RTFKT
would opt to create this content in a game engine rather than traditional CG tools. “We’ve been
fans of Unreal Engine since day one, a lot of us grew up playing games using Unreal, and we
always knew and bet on a future workflow and production pipeline geared towards real-time 3D,”
says Benoit Pagotto, co-founder of RTFKT.

For a recent project called Space Drip, RTFKT worked with 18 different artists who each created a
collectible character and customized it with an Among Us-style skin. These characters were then
placed into capsules and launched into an Unreal Engine-generated space environment ahead of
the drop on the website.

“We’ve used Unreal to create live event scenes for

our drops and content because of its ease of use
and its ability to handle live content—and because
it’s the best real time 3D engine,” says Benoit.

Benoit’s vision for where the digital fashion space

could go over the next ten or twenty years is bold.
“Your identity and fashion style in the metaverse
will be your true identity—an opportunity for self
expression as well as self monetization,” he says.

This sci-fi-esque vision of the future may be

optimistic, but what is undeniable is that some of
the key technologies and markets that could form
its foundation are already in existence.

“Digital humans will need a wardrobe,” says

Benoit. “It’s what people call the ‘direct to avatar’
market, and we truly believe it’s going to become a
thing. It already kind of is. If one billion people use
an avatar to spend time in the metaverse, then
someone will need to continue to update and dress
those avatars.”

Real-time technology like Unreal Engine and

MetaHuman Creator will be the toolsets creators use
to create this bold new world, Benoit says. “It’s been
super helpful to use Unreal,” he explains. “We tried it
