“Tucker Carlson Tonight” covers U.S. and international politics and social and
cultural issues from a far-right perspective.
The show is hosted by Tucker Carlson, a conservative political commentator who
has hosted “Tucker Carlson Tonight” since 2016. Carlson previously co-hosted
the “Crossfire” debate show on CNN from 2001 to 2005, and the show “Tucker”
on MSNBC from 2005 to 2008. He became a contributor to Fox News in 2009
and co-hosted “Fox & Friends Weekend” between 2012 and 2016.
Carlson also co-founded the conservative news website The Daily Caller in 2010,
serving as editor-in-chief until 2016, and selling his ownership interest in 2020.
A typical episode consists of a monologue from Carlson, often criticizing U.S.
President Joe Biden and Democrats, followed by interviews with conservative
figures. Typical guests include Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republican
activist Charlie Kirk, and Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. The show
occasionally features guests who are not Republicans, but who are generally still
critical of the Biden administration, such as former Democratic U.S. Rep. Tulsi
Gabbard and journalist Glenn Greenwald.
Carlson often ends his show by describing “Tucker Carlson Tonight” as “a sworn
enemy of lying, pomposity, smugness, and groupthink.”

Credibility
Carlson’s program regularly advances false, misleading, and unsubstantiated
claims on topics of importance such as COVID-19 and U.S. and international
politics.
For example, in the Aug. 31, 2022, episode of his show, Carlson said of COVID-19
vaccines, “They mandated an experimental vaccine that didn’t actually work, a
Posted Nov. 2022 on
NewsGuardTech.com
drug that the U.K. government now admits can be dangerous and shouldn’t be
used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.”
In fact, at the time the episode aired, the website of the U.K. Medicine and
Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said, “COVID-19 vaccination is strongly
recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The coronavirus (COVID-
19) vaccines available in the U.K. have been shown to be effective and to have a
good safety profile. It is important to have your COVID-19 vaccinations to protect
you and your baby.” The U.K. Joint Committee on Vaccination and
Immunisation advised in April 2021 that pregnant women should be offered
COVID-19 vaccines “at the same time as the rest of the population,” and said,
“There have been no specific safety concerns identified with any brand of
coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines in relation to pregnancy.”
Moreover, contrary to Carlson’s claims that COVID-19 vaccines are “an
experimental vaccine that didn’t actually work,” the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-
19 vaccines have been fully approved for use in adults by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration based on multiple phases of peer-reviewed clinical trials and real
world studies showing that the vaccines are safe and effective in reducing the
risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.
For example, a May 2022 study published in the New England Journal of
Medicine, and which involved 2.2 million people in Qatar, found that a booster
dose of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines “led to strong protection
against Covid-19–related hospitalization and death” from the omicron variant of
COVID-19.
During an Aug. 15, 2022, segment where Carlson criticized the FBI search that
month of former President Donald Trump’s Florida home as part of its
investigation into the removal of classified records, Carlson said, “Keep in mind,
no one is above the law. That was definitely the word from Joe Scarborough, a
man who was accused of committing murder while serving as a member of
Posted Nov. 2022 on
NewsGuardTech.com
Congress, yet somehow moved seamlessly to the MSNBC lineup without being
charged or even investigated.”
Carlson appeared to be referencing the 2001 death of Lori Klausutis, who worked
in Scarborough’s congressional office in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. According to
a May 2020 report from The Washington Post, the local medical examiner
determined that Klausutis died after she lost consciousness because of an
abnormal heart rhythm and fell, hitting her head on a desk. No foul play was
suspected in her death, which does not support Carlson’s claim that
Scarborough is “a man who was accused of committing murder while serving as a
member of Congress.”
In a June 10, 2022, segment, Carlson said of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S.
Capitol, “Just to be clear on terms, an insurrection is when people with guns try
to overthrow the government. Not a single person in the crowd on January 6 was
found to be carrying a firearm. Not one.”
In fact, NBC News reported one week after the attack that police had seized 12
guns, including an assault rifle, and thousands of rounds of ammunition from
seven protesters attending the Jan. 6, 2021, rally. In one such arrest, the District
of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man who was alleged
to be carrying a fully loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun on Capitol grounds
on Jan. 6. According to a database maintained by National Public Radio (NPR), as
of Oct. 25, 2021, three of the people facing federal charges for their involvement
in the Jan. 6 attack had been charged with possessing a gun on Capitol grounds.
In a May 19, 2022, segment, Carlson advanced a false claim about a January 2022
U.S. government proposal to amend the WHO’s International Health Regulations,
which the organization describes on its website as “an overarching legal
framework that defines countries’ rights and obligations in handling public
health events and emergencies that have the potential to cross borders.”
Posted Nov. 2022 on
NewsGuardTech.com
Carlson said of the proposed amendments, “The Biden administration is very
close to handing the World Health Organization power over every aspect, the
intimate aspects, of your life. So, imagine the civil liberties abuses that you
lived through the COVID lockdowns, but permanent, and administered from a
foreign country.”
In fact, nothing in the proposal would give the WHO “power over every aspect,
the intimate aspects, of your life,” as Carlson claimed, nor give any foreign entity
the power to enforce a lockdown in the U.S. According to a May 2022 fact-
checking article from The Associated Press, the U.S. government proposal would
set deadlines on how quickly WHO and member countries are supposed to
report information about potential public health emergencies of international
concern.
Lawrence Gostin, director of Georgetown University’s WHO Collaborating Center
on National and Global Health Law, told FactCheck.org in May 2022 that the WHO
can only make recommendations on public health emergencies and cannot force
members to accept them, which would not change under the amendments
proposed by the U.S.
“WHO has no authority to dictate US health policy whatsoever,” Gostin said. “The
Regulations have no control whatsoever over national health care policy or
programs. That is entirely a matter for the sovereign nation to decide. The WHO
can make recommendations after the declaration of a global emergency, but they
are just recommendations and are non-binding. States are legally bound to
report dangerous outbreaks, but there is no enforcement mechanism and
countries often do not comply.”
In a Feb. 14, 2022, segment, Carlson claimed that Russian hackers did not steal
emails from the Democratic National Committee in 2016. Carlson said, “It was
not true. It has never been true. [Russian President] Vladimir Putin did not hack
the DNC. There was never any evidence that the Russians hacked the DNC.
Posted Nov. 2022 on
NewsGuardTech.com
Instead, the DNC emails were very clearly stolen from within the building, most
likely by a Bernie Sanders supporter who wanted to show the world how Bernie
Sanders was being shafted by the very same corrupt forces in Washington that
later shafted Donald Trump.”
In fact, a January 2017 report from the U.S. Office of the Director of National
Intelligence said that Russian intelligence had access to the DNC networks from
July 2015 through at least June 2016, which “resulted in the compromise of the
personal email accounts of Democratic Party officials and political figures” that
were later released through WikiLeaks. An August 2020 bipartisan report
released by the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee “found that Russian
President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian effort to hack computer networks
and accounts affiliated with the Democratic Party and leak information damaging
to Hillary Clinton and her campaign for president.”
U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded in his 2019 report about Russian
interference in the 2016 U.S presidential election that Russian hackers had been
responsible for the leak of DNC emails.
In a March 9, 2022, segment, Carlson suggested that the U.S. government had
covered up its involvement with Ukrainian biological research facilities. Carlson
began the segment by saying, “If you had told us just four days ago that the Biden
administration was funding secret biolabs, and in Ukraine of all places, we would
not have believed you. I don’t think we would put that on TV, no thanks.”
He then played a clip from a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, in
which U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio asked U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political
Affairs Victoria Nuland if Ukraine had chemical or biological weapons. Nuland
replied, “Ukraine has biological research facilities, which, in fact, we are now
quite concerned Russian forces may be seeking to gain control of. So we are
working with the Ukrainians on how they can prevent any of those research
materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces, should they approach.”
Posted Nov. 2022 on
NewsGuardTech.com
Carlson said after playing Nuland’s comments, “You mean secret biolabs? Like
the secret biolabs Ukraine definitely doesn’t have? Ukraine has those? Yes it
does.” Carlson went on to say that Nuland “just confirmed that the Russian
disinformation they have been telling us for days is a lie and a conspiracy theory,
crazy and immoral to believe, it is in fact totally and completely true.” Carlson
suggested later in the segment that the biological research facilities Nuland
spoke about could be developing biological weapons, stating, “From your
answer, Victoria Nuland, we would assume, because you all but said it, that there's
a military application to this research, that they were working on bioweapons.
Again, your answer suggests that.”
In fact, the biological research facilities mentioned by Nuland were not secret,
nor did she suggest that they were working on the development of bioweapons,
as Carlson claimed. The U.S. has been providing aid to Ukrainian laboratories
since 2005, when the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and U.S. Department of
Defense signed an agreement intended to limit the threat of bioterrorism by
implementing safeguards on deadly pathogens from Soviet-era biological
weapons programs. The aid is part of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Biological
Threat Reduction Program, which collaborates with partner countries to reduce
the threat of outbreaks of dangerous infectious diseases by helping partners to
secure dangerous pathogens and to quickly detect outbreaks, according to the
U.S. Embassy in Ukraine’s website.
The Biological Threat Reduction Program has since helped to construct and
modernize Ukrainian laboratories. The labs themselves are run and primarily
financed by the Ukrainian government. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU)
noted in response to claims about the presence of U.S. military biological
laboratories in a May 2020 statement that “no foreign biological laboratories
operate in Ukraine.”
Because Carlson has repeatedly advanced false and unsubstantiated claims
about significant topics, including COVID-19 and U.S. politics, NewsGuard has
Posted Nov. 2022 on

determined that “Tucker Carlson Tonight” repeatedly conveys false news and
does not report on important topics responsibly.
As previously noted, Carlson’s commentary and that of his guests routinely
criticize the Biden administration, Democrats, and Republicans who agree with
the Biden administration on any policy, with little to no effort to present both
sides of any issue.
For example, in a Sept. 12, 2022, segment, Carlson criticized the grand jury
subpoenas issued to Amy and Kylie Kremer, who are respectively the chair and
executive director of Women for America First, the group that organized the Jan.
6, 2021, rally outside the White House that preceded the attack on the Capitol.
“Why would the FBI, Joe Biden’s FBI, need Amy Kremer’s daughter’s Instagram
posts?” Carlson asked, without mentioning that Kylie Kremer was named as the
“person in charge” on permits for the Jan. 6 rally. “Because this isn’t about the
events leading up to January 6th. Obviously, this is about mining all of her
personal information. This is harassment on political grounds. It’s illegal. It’s
unconstitutional.” The show did not feature any perspective from the
Department of Justice or from anyone who supported the issuing of the
subpoenas.
In a June 13, 2022, segment, Carlson criticized “red flag laws” that would allow
court petitions to take away someone’s firearms, on the basis that the person is a
threat to themselves or others. Carlson asserted that red flag laws “would end
due process” and said, “You can see why Democrats love emergencies, nothing
gives them more power, more quickly. They declared the atrocities in Uvalde and
Buffalo an emergency, unlike the daily mass shootings in Baltimore and Chicago,
cities they run and whose killings they, therefore, assiduously ignore.”
Carlson then played a clip of Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas,
explaining his support for a potential Senate gun control bill that may include
Posted Nov. 2022 on
NewsGuardTech.com
offering grants to states to pass “red flag laws,” but which would not enact any
such law at the national level.
Cornyn said in the clip, “We can do something sensible that does not undermine
the rights of law-abiding citizens under the Constitution to keep and bear arms.”
Carlson then criticized Cornyn, saying that the senator’s use of the “sensible” was
a “Democratic talking point, approved by the [Democratic National Committee],
it’s sensible gun safety regulation. So here you have John Cornyn taking [House
Speaker] Nancy Pelosi’s language.” The segment did not feature any other
perspective about gun control.
In a March 8, 2022, segment, Carlson criticized opponents of Florida legislation
that would prohibit instruction by public school personnel on sexual orientation
and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade or “in a manner that is
not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance
with state standards,” according to the bill. Carlson said that the bill “has nothing
to do with gays. You shouldn’t be talking to kindergarteners about gender
identity, especially if you are not their parents. That’s creepy, you should be
arrested for that in fact. You talk to a normal person’s kids about sex in
kindergarten? You could get beaten up. You should get beaten up.”
Carlson’s guest during the segment was Matt Walsh, a conservative podcast host
and columnist for The Daily Wire, who also criticized opponents of the Florida
bill. “I like the fact that Democrats are now at the point where they’re just walking
through the halls screaming the word gay, because that’s really all they have to
offer right now. It’s a totally empty party with nothing to offer the world.” The
show did not feature any perspective from opponents of the legislation.
Fox News Channel spokeswoman Caley Cronin did not respond to four email
inquiries, including one sent in September 2022, seeking comment on the false
claims aired on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” as well as on the show’s failure to
present alternative perspectives on issues that are the subject of debate.

History
“Tucker Carlson Tonight” premiered on Nov. 14, 2016. The show replaced “On The
Record With Brit Hume” and originally aired in the 7 p.m. slot. “Tucker Carlson
Tonight” later replaced “The O’Reilly Factor” in the 8 p.m. slot in 2017. The show
was the top-rated cable news program in 2021, according to Nielsen Media
Research, averaging 3.2 million viewers.
In a Dec. 13, 2018, segment on immigration, Carlson said, “We have a moral
obligation to admit the world’s poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country
poorer, and dirtier, and more divided."
In response, an online liberal activist group called Sleeping Giants encouraged
companies to pull their advertisements from “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” In April
2019, Variety reported that advertising revenue attached to “Tucker Carlson
Tonight” had fallen 47 percent, to $48.3 million from $92.7 million in 2017,
although Marianne Gambelli, Fox Corp.’s president of ad sales, told Variety that
the figures were inaccurate.
Companies also announced that they would pull advertisements from Carlson’s
show after Carlson said on Aug. 6, 2019, “This is a country where the average
person is getting poorer, where the suicide rate is spiking. White supremacy,
that's the problem. It's a hoax. Just like the Russia hoax. It's a conspiracy theory
used to divide the country and keep a hold on power.”

Carlson announced two days later that he was going on vacation, which an
unnamed Fox News spokesperson told CNN had been planned. He returned on
Aug. 20, 2019. While Carlson was on vacation, more companies said they were
pulling advertisements from his show, including Dell, Nestle, and Stein Mart,
according to an August 2019 HuffPost article.
In December 2019, model Karen McDougal, who alleged that she had had an affair
with Donald Trump prior to his becoming president, sued Fox after Carlson said
in 2018 that money paid to McDougal “sounds like a classic case of extortion.”
Defending Carlson, Fox lawyers argued that “reasonable viewers” should tune in
to the show “with an appropriate amount of skepticism.” The attorneys argued
that Carlson’s comments were “loose, figurative or hyperbolic,” that the word
“extort” was “rhetorical hyperbole, a vigorous epithet,” and that “spirited debate
on talk-show programs does not lend itself well to statements of actual fact, as
over-the-top and emotionally charged language is commonplace in that
setting.”
U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil ruled in favor of Fox in September 2020.
“The statements are rhetorical hyperbole and opinion commentary intended to
frame a political debate, and, as such, are not actionable as defamation,” The New
York Times quoted from Vyskocil’s opinion.
Carlson has been mentioned as a potential 2024 presidential candidate in
articles published by Politico, The National Interest, and by U.K. newspaper The
Independent. A July 2020 Politico article quoted an unnamed Republican
strategist as saying, “If you are a Republican politician and you want to know
where Republican voters are, all you have to do is watch Tucker Carlson every
night.”
Carlson said he was not interested in running for president during a June 2021
interview on the conservative podcast “Ruthless.” Carlson said, “I mean, I guess if

that I would be that guy.”
Editor’s Note: This TV Nutrition Label was updated on Sept. 26, 2022, with new
examples of the show’s content. It was previously updated on July 20, 2022, on
June 23, 2022, and on May 2, 2022.
