Hendos truck celebrated her 50th birthday last week on Good Friday. She took the half-century in style with family and friends and had her first beer, a Pure Blonde, down the radiator. I reckon she is old enough to
have one now, said Hendo. Hendos old truck is a familiar sight around Blackall and has been for the past 19 years. The last 50 years have seen some substantial changes in automotive advances. Although she has been equipped out with a music system, the truck is lacking some of the modern conveniences, including air conditioning. Just get her up to 80 kilometres per hour and wind the windows
Looking young after receiving a bit of work some years ago, Hendos 1959 International turned 50 this Easter
down, Hendo says. Before Hendo put her to work, the piece of automotive history was parked in a shed with the previous owner for 18 years. Nowadays, however, she is a regular runner around town, in close to original condition and has needed no work in the last two years. If she does need any work, Hendo does it all himself. She is very easy to fix but she just doesnt break, says Hendo. Although Hendo says she is terrible on the fuel, the truck was manufactured in an era when the cost per litre was substantially less than it is today. With a top speed of 110 kilometres per hour, she is happy to sit at around 90 but she does take a while to get there. Im very sentimental about all vehicles, Hendo says. Having one is like a love affair. Like a woman, the truck sometimes lets you down, but she doesnt answer back.

On the Thursday before Easter it seemed that many people were hoping for rain over the long weekend. Their wishes were granted as, by Tuesday morning, the townships of both Blackall and Tambo had each received 374 points (95mm) of rain. Those who took the opportunity to go away for Easter missed out on the action down by the river in Blackall. There was a constant flurry of cars over the bridge, monitoring the steady rise of the water level in the Barcoo throughout Sunday and Monday. The steady rainfall over a wide part of the catchment produced a peak of water in the Barcoo at Blackall, which came to within centimetres of covering the bridge. Throughout the week prior to Easter, the automatic water level meter at Blackall recorded a normal depth of 0.85 metres in the Barcoo. From dawn on Easter Saturday through to midafternoon on Easter Monday, the river rose more than 2.7 metres to peak at 3.56 metres, just below the bridge road surface. The level classified as a minor flood is when the height of the river at Blackall reaches 2.9 metres. Above this level, minor roads are blocked or closed and low level bridges in the area may be submerged. The rainfall was widespread but typically variable over the shire. Many properties received some falls, but some missed out. Praire Vale, between Augathella and Tambo, recorded a total of 472 points (120mm). South of Tambo, Lansdowne received 413 points (105mm) which put a hold on most of their Easter plans. continued on page 3

The Edgar T. Towner VC MC larger-than-life size bronze statue has arrived in Blackall and preparations for its installation and unveiling are well underway. It is to be installed early next week in Blackall Memorial Park under the watchful eye of sculptor William Eicholtz. The statue will be unveiled and blessed next Friday in a twilight ceremony on Anzac Day eve, commencing at 5pm. The Honourable Justice John Logan RFD, a judge in the Federal Court of Australia, will be the guest speaker, while the statue will be unveiled by Geoffrey and John Towner and Ronan Robinson. The dedication will be overseen by Chaplain Morgan Batt. Earlier in his career, Justice Logan made a crucial contribution to the Towner story when he represented the Australian Government in the legal case which prevented Edgar Towners Victoria Cross being taken out of Australia. Justice Logan has said that he is honoured to be able to deliver a speech on this important occasion. Towners genuine medal set, now in the hands of a private collector, will be in Blackall over the Anzac weekend and on display at the Veterans Dinner on Thursday, April 23. The official Anzac Day military guest and key speaker at the dinner, Colonel Steve Goltz said that he was looking forward to the trip immensely. Major Terry Brennan, President of the Blackall RSL sub branch, has announced that ABCs 7:30 Report reporter John Taylor will be in Blackall early next week to compile a story on the Towner project. This is a magnificent opportunity to promote Blackall and its wonderful community throughout Australia, said Major Brennan. The story will be broadcast nationally on ABC continued on page 3

continued from page 1 television on Thursday, April 23. The Blackall community has a proud and rich military heritage and has consequently always supported Anzac Day activities, Major Brennan added. The Anzac weekend this year hosts a series of especially important events. Therefore, he asks that the community go that little bit further this year and attend as many of the ceremonies as possible including the statue unveiling, combined schools ceremony and the veterans dinner, as well as the Anzac Day ceremonies. Major Brennan concluded by stating that the organising committee still required funding. Donations towards the Towner project are welcome and individuals and organisations are encouraged to contact Major Brennan should they wish to contribute financially.

550 points (140mm). Byrgenna, 80 kilometres south of Tambo, received 350 points (88mm). Toliness, also south of Tambo received an impressive 700 points (177mm), which was only met by Sunny Downs and their rainfall of 800 points (203mm). North west of Blackall at Melrose, 250 points (63mm) fell, while a similar amount was recorded at Tralee, north east of Blackall, of 266 points (67mm) by Easter Monday. Duneira had a solid fall of 370 points (94mm). Local Agforce president Jack Banks said that across the shire generally it had been very good rain. It had been forecast and it came through almost exactly as predicted, he said. Prior to the Easter rain, the Blackall Tambo shire was relatively dry, particularly in the southern parts. Rain at this time of year makes a huge difference, said Jack. The only problem is that it was not heavy enough to run water into the catchments and dams, so some parts are still very dry. There is currently an assessment of those areas that may still require drought assistance.

Producers from around the central west have the opportunity to benefit from the experiences of the award-winning Blackall BestPrac Group at the inaugural Blackall Innovations Forum on Tuesday, April 21. The forum will showcase new technologies and management techniques that have worked well for other graziers. It was the Blackall BestPrac Groups ability to work together, embrace new ideas and seek the most profitable and sustainable business practices that won them the Rabobank Agribusiness award for most outstanding innovation at the Nissan Central West Excellence Awards last month. Jack Banks from the Blackall BestPrac Group said winning this award acknowledges the dedication put in by members to improving their industry and recognises what has been done over a number of years. A group of graziers with tried and proven innovations have been brought together to share their experiences. Topics include the technology in e-sheep, satellite monitoring systems, wild dog control, profitability of cattle and sheep in the central west, managing depression and water innovations. with the capacity to host youth arts workshops. Initiated in 2006, Gritty Places is a partnership between the state government and local councils to develop disused council-owned buildings into arts spaces. It is a creative and cost-effective way to help the regions develop places for people to develop their talent in cultural and creative industries. Previous communities that have received funding through the program have demonstrated positive results from having these art spaces in their communities.

Residents in central west Queensland can help celebrate Queenslands 150th birthday by naming six bridges around the region. Main Roads minister Craig Wallace said the Q150 bridge-naming festivities would highlight the role that roads and bridges play in connecting Queenslanders and the states prosperity. One of the six bridges in the central west region that requires a name is the Barcoo river bridge at Blackall. The Blackall community is invited to put forward suggestions for consideration, particularly those names that mean something special to the community such as Indigenous names, local historical events or traditions, plants, animals and geographical landmarks. Submissions will close on May 22. All residents are encouraged to get involved by visiting the Main Roads website and suggest a name for the Barcoo river bridge at Blackall. Following a review of the submissions by a panel which includes community representatives, a name will be recommended. For more information on the bridge-naming, phone 4651 2777 or visit www.mainroads.qld.gov.au.

Community Liquor Accord In an effort to control incidents of alcohol-fuelled violence in our community, the Blackall Police will be taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of all citizens whilst they are attending licensed venues and events. The Blackall Police propose to establish a Liquor Accord in the community that will ensure all licensees are united in their response to disorderly behaviour by patrons. All Blackall licensees have been personally invited to a meeting taking place at the Acacia Motor Inn on Monday, April 20 to provide them with information on how a liquor accord would benefit them, their customers and other community members. Alcohol and Drug clinical worker Glennis Ford will also be attending to provide information on the benefits of a liquor accord. If you have not received a personal invitation to this meeting and would like to attend please telephone Sergeant Kevin Ongheen at the police station on 46574200. School Parking With the recommencement of school for term two, please be once again advised that police enforcement will continue in front of Saint Josephs Catholic School and Blackall State School for the safety of all students. Infringements will continue to be issued for those motorists that choose not to comply with the law and the polite warnings issued by police. Motorists need to remember that the laws relating to parking, speeding and u-turns in the school zones are there to PROTECT THE CHILDREN. When you disobey these laws it is THE CHILDREN THAT YOU ENDANGER.
