 establish your own simple plan to have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Climbing is an essential mountaineering skill. It is also considering a good
aerobic exercise that will improve your stamina and endurance as well as muscle
strength and in addition, reaching and stretching for holds will improve your
flexibility and agility. Can you enumerate different kinds of climbing based on the

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Planning Outdoor Activities

Planning is very essential in everything. In mountaineering, failing to plan may lead to


unhappy experience. It does not say that if plan you will have a perfect adventure, but
to prepare you to things that may happen and lessen trouble in case.
To start your plan, here are some of the guide questions that may help you:

Plan and Prepare


Here are the guide questions to help you, to be more prepared:

1. Where do you want to go?


 And after choosing the place to visit, identify the rules that is being
implemented and concerns in the place.
2. When are you going?
 To be warn if there are possible natural hazards on the day you planned
to visit.
3. How many companions you are planning to bring?
 This may help for the task distribution and budgeting
4. How much time do you have to prepare?
 To check if you are ahead, exact, or late in time. So, if you are ahead you
can be more prepared and if not, you can move or reschedule it in time
where you are ready.

Physical Preparation
As with any sport, before engaging to an activity proper training and physical
preparation is needed. The higher difficulty of the climb, the more physical preparation
is needed. This is important to reduce the hiking related injuries and make the activity
more enjoyable.

Essential Equipment
It is not important if the equipment you have is cheap or expensive but the quality and
usefulness of it. Knowing and having a right equipment is significant for successful
event. Here are some of the essential equipment to choose from.

 hiking shoes / hiking sandals


 quick dry clothes
 mountaineer’s backpack
 water bottle / hydro-pack
 cook set / eating gear
 raincoat / jacket
 headlamp / flashlight
 hiking gloves
 sleeping bag
 ground sleeping mat
 tent
 utility or camping knife
 first aid kit

Backpacking
It is good to planning the things that you going to bring, make sure the bag that you
are going to carry is not higher to 33 % or 1/3 of your body weight, the less is always
better. Bring what are more essential and leave all unnecessary things to make load
lighter.

Trail Movements
Managing the team is a significant for the success and safe trip. Basic know-how such
as trail signs, tasking signaling, and trail practices important to survive in the
mountain trip.
 Trail Signs – trail signs are temporary symbols used by mountaineers or
climbers to guide themselves on their way back and/ or guide others who are
following:

 Group Composition – In this part of planning, it is the designating of tasks


and responsibilities to each member.

1. Trail Master – It is the person in-charge of putting up trail signs and


responsible for pacing the group. (Position: Front)
2. Sweeper – It is the person in-charge for securing that nobody is left
behind and responsible in checking if there is any hiking equipment or
person tools that might be missing along the trail. (Position: Rear/Tail)
3. Contact Person – It is the person assigned to communicate from the
group’s home base for any updates such us current weather condition,
precaution, or in responsible in any emergency. (Position: Home Base)
4. Team Medic – The person with a thorough knowledge of first aid
technique and basic life support who address any emergency that may
happen during the hike. (Position: Middle)
5. Team Leader – It is the person who is selected for being reliable, skills
and leadership qualities.
6. Scribe – The person in-charge to document all the details of the climb.

 Signaling – Before moving out to climb the group must set rules for signaling.
For signaling it usually whistle. The following are the signals use often.
 two short whistle blasts for stopping
 one long whistle blast to proceed
 six blast to a minute is the international mountaineering distress signal
for emergency
 Trail Practices
In exploring the trail, some guiding principles must be kept in mind. Some trail
practices concerning trail movement are as follows.
1. Walk in a single file when hiking with a group to protect the side of
vegetation and prevent soil erosion.
2. On muddy trails, shoes or sandals slide marks will convey that someone
has already fell, so avoid if you can.
3. Do not step on obstacles.
4. If there is a blocking log on the trail, check on the best way on how to
pass the area.
5. When looking for additional support such as roots or vines make sure
that they are sturdy and do not have thorns
6. Bend your knees and face the diagonal direction flow of the current
when crossing rivers or streams, to prevent the strong one from
knocking you down. Unfasten your backpack’s hip belt and chest strap
when crossing rivers and streams to allow you to remove it quickly in
case you lose your balance or fall into the water. Double waterproofing
you backpacks may serve as a floating device during water emergencies.

REMEMBER
Readiness is one of the keys to safe and enjoyable trip. Failing to prepare can cause
you unsuccessful adventure. In any activity or things to do planning is essential.

In this time of pandemic, it is necessary to create plan, we should not just sit and wait
about what would happens next. We should make a move to be safe and stay healthy.

Planning Time

house to be healthy even we are quarantine?
2. What are the essential tools to prevent you from getting infected by the virus?
