1. Why do you think curriculum evaluation is important?

Print (1993) identified several important purposes and functions


of evaluation in school setting:

● Essential in providing feedback to learners – provides useful


information in helping the students improve their performance
and helps teachers identify the strength and weaknesses of the
learners

● Helpful in determining how well learners have achieved the


objectives of the curriculum- describes whether the students
learned or mastered the desired outcomes and objectives of the
curriculum

● To improve curriculum-the result of evaluation serves as a basis


for improving curriculum and for suggesting innovations to
improve learning.

In addition, curriculum evaluation is also useful to


administrators and teachers in many different ways. For example:
● Evaluation helps in making decisions about improving teaching
and learning processes.

● It helps in shaping academic policies.

● It guides in initiating curricular changes and innovations.

● It ensures the quality of any curricular program.

● It helps schools align their curriculum to different curriculum


sources and influences.

● It determines the level of success of the school’s vision and


mission.
Overall, curriculum evaluation is important as it is intended to
provide meaningful information in almost every aspect of the
curriculum. The results of evaluation provide strong bases for all
decisions done about the planning, design, development, and the
implementation of the curriculum. It can also be utilize in
instituting educational reforms and in finding ways to make the
curriculum more relevant and responsive to the needs of the
learners.

2. What is the difference between evaluation and assessment?

Assessment is defined as a process of appraising something or


someone, i.e. the act of gauging the quality, value or importance. As
against, evaluation focuses on making a judgement about values,
numbers or performance of someone or something. Assessment is
made to identify the level of performance of an individual, whereas
evaluation is performed to determine the degree to which goals are
attained.

The basic difference between assessment and evaluation lies in the


orientation, i.e. while the assessment is process oriented, evaluation is
product oriented.

3. How often do schools evaluate their curriculum?

It is evaluated as needed or whenever there is a need for a


change of curriculum if it does not fit to the student's learning
the classroom and school environment or to revised courses and
teaching to enhance student's learning.

1. What data can be gathered in the classroom and school


level?

Doll (1997) asserted that the classroom in fact could be the


first site of gathering important data that will lead to
curriculum evaluation. Within the classroom, teachers and
administrators can collect data using several
instruments/tools like:

● Test results
● Anecdotal records
● Checklists
● Interview guides
● Observation guides
● Personality inventories
● Rating scales
● IQ TEsts
● Interest inventories

School system level:


● Opinion polls
● Surveys
● Focus-group discussion
● Follow-up studies (Graduate tracer studies)
● Standard evaluation instruments
● Result of district or national tests

2. How do these data provide the necessary information for


evaluating a curriculum

The necessary and important aspect of any national


education system is the Curriculum evaluation. It provides the
basis for curriculum policy decisions, for feedback on
continuous curriculum adjustments and processes of
curriculum implementation. The achievement of the goals and
aims of education programs.

1. Do you consider accreditation as a form of curriculum


evaluation? Why?

Yes, because accreditation is a concept of self-regulation


which focuses on self-study and evaluation and on the
continuing improvement of educational quality. It is both a
process and a result.
As a process, it is a form of peer review in which an association of
schools and colleges establishes sets of criteria and procedures to
encourage high maintenance of standards of education among its
affiliate members.
As a result, it is a form of certification granted by a recognized and
authorized accrediting agency to an educational program or to an
educational institution as possessing certain standards of quality
which are over and above those prescribed as minimum requirements
for government recognition. Accreditation is based upon an analysis of
the merits of educational operations in the context of the institution's
philosophy and objectives.

How can we involve the following stakeholders in curriculum
evaluation?

● Parents
The reason for this is because parents are the people who know
their children best and the ones who support and give financial
resources. Therefore, in the context of the curriculum, parents'
participation as co-implementer and supporters in curriculum
development is crucial to enhancing students' learning and
influencing their behavior.
Parents influence the implementation of the curriculum by playing
a vital role in monitoring the lessons taught at schools, filling the
gap between their children and the school administration by
providing various resources which are not available in school.
Teachers often take help of parents for monitoring the social and
behavioral development of a child, especially for special educational
needs.

● Students
As the center of the curriculum, they study the curriculum. They
are the recipients of the curriculum being implemented and their
performance is being evaluated for effectiveness.

● Community Officials
Community leaders serve as the basis for determining what
curricula or programs may be adopted and can meet the needs of
the community.

● Professional Organizations
Psychologists and social workers are known for their contribution
towards special schools and their children. These stakeholders
provide useful options for dealing with students of foreign origin or
those with disabilities. Often acting as school board members,
community members are usually seen contributing to the various
resources which are not found at school premises.

Government and the professional regulation commission are other


stakeholders providing a license to graduates of different
universities and colleges. These groups are one of the funding
sources for initiatives.

● Alumni
The alumni helps the programs of the institution. They are can
also become benefactors and helps conducts sponsorship for
institutional activitites

● Researchers
The one who is responsible for the curriculum’s innovation. They
make sure that the curriculum is still effective and useful.
