Final Year Thesis: The objective of my thesis was to provide a methodology for calculating the cost
of quality in transmission line construction projects. The methodology was tested on a case study to
determine its feasibility and practicality.
Memberships • Registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (Pr Eng)
• Member of the Golden Key Society
• PLS-CADD modelling of overhead lines with operating voltages between 110 kV and 380 kV to
determine compliance to the Dutch national standards
• Modelling of transmission line towers in PLS-Tower to simulate unique loading situations
• Design of transmission tower connections in PLS-Tower
• Developing emergency restoration solutions for overhead lines using modular guyed structures
• Developing designs for underground cable termination points by considering the applicable
statutory clearances and structural loads
• Development of excel-based tools to streamline the design process
• Participating in factory acceptance testing on behalf of clients who purchase power line
components from international manufacturers
• Ensuring designs comply to requirements originating from the Eurocodes and Dutch national
standards

Mr. Muhammed Hussain Khan
CV
• Appointed as a senior member of the fibre optics technology group overseeing the design and
installation of fibre cables on power lines
• Provision of consulting services to internal Eskom customers which included the translation of
requirements into design parameters f or f ibre optic cable ref urbishment and installation
projects
• Development of Eskom fibre optic standards
• Participated in factory evaluations of international fibre cable suppliers
• Development of criteria for evaluating fibre cable products from potential suppliers
• Educating both peers and superiors about fibre cable-related topics
Achievements:
• Appointed as the responsible person for all fibre optics projects relating to power lines . Within
this role I streamlined communication between departments to ensure that engineering designs
catered for the requirements of all stakeholders. This resulted in an increase in the standard of
project execution.
• Appointed as a member of the team which provided technical oversight on a new contract
structure which Eskom used to interact with fibre cable suppliers and installers. The new
contract resulted in a significant reduction in costs. My technical input to the development of
the contract involved developing supplier evaluation criteria, developing standards and
specifications which highlighted Eskom's technical requirements to tenderers, and c ompiling
bills of quantities for pricing purposes.
• Selected as part of a team who travelled to Germany, China, and England to evaluate
suppliers who intended to supply Eskom with various power line products.
