Eskom - Power Delivery Engineering, South Africa

Mechanical Engineer, June 2013 – April 2019

Project engineering duties:

• Experience with all project phases from concept design to post-execution

• Ensuring the development of innovative designs and effective leadership of design teams
• Development of designs for the rehabilitation or modification of existing lines as well as t he
construction of new lines with operating voltages between 132 kV and 765 kV
• Development of mechanical designs and execution plans for bypasses at substations
• Technical evaluation of tender submissions f or construction projects and provision of
engineering support to contractors during execution
• Preparation of BOQs, design reports and specifications for projects
• Undertaking regular site visits to ensure projects are executed in the approved manner and in
accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act of South Africa
• Appointed as a member of the Prof ile Review Committee and the Structural Committee,
(operating within the power lines department) with responsibility for evaluating the PLS-CA DD
models of lines and construction methodologies proposed by OHL contractors

Fibre optics steering committee duties:

• Appointed as a senior member of the fibre optics technology group overseeing the design and
installation of fibre cables on power lines
• Provision of consulting services to internal Eskom customers which included the translation of
requirements into design parameters f or f ibre optic cable ref urbishment and installation
projects
• Development of Eskom fibre optic standards
• Participated in factory evaluations of international fibre cable suppliers
• Development of criteria for evaluating fibre cable products from potential suppliers
• Educating both peers and superiors about fibre cable-related topics

Achievements:
• Appointed as the responsible person for all fibre optics projects relating to power lines . Within
this role I streamlined communication between departments to ensure that engineering designs
catered for the requirements of all stakeholders. This resulted in an increase in the standard of
project execution.
• Appointed as a member of the team which provided technical oversight on a new contract
structure which Eskom used to interact with fibre cable suppliers and installers. The new
contract resulted in a significant reduction in costs. My technical input to the development of
the contract involved developing supplier evaluation criteria, developing standards and
specifications which highlighted Eskom's technical requirements to tenderers, and c ompiling
bills of quantities for pricing purposes.
• Selected as part of a team who travelled to Germany, China, and England to evaluate
suppliers who intended to supply Eskom with various power line products.
