Modes of Transmission
Two Kinds of Transmission
1. Direct - Occurs when there is physical contact between an infected person
and a susceptible person.
2. Indirect - Occurs when in contact with contaminated objects.

Direct Transmission
1. Contact Transmission
Occurs through skin-to-skin contact, kissing, and sexual intercourse.
Example of Diseases:
 Hand, foot, and mouth disease
 HIV/AIDS
Preventive Measures:
 Keep both hands clean and perform hand hygiene properly.
 Do not share personal items.
 Adopt proper Isolation for the sick.
 Change new and sterilized Syringes every use.

2. Food-borne/Water-borne Transmissions
Occurs when in contact with soil or vegetation harboring infectious
organisms.
Example of Diseases:
 Cholera
 Viral gastroenteritis
Preventive Measures:
 Ensure all foods are adequately cooked.
 Perform hand hygiene before meals and after using the toilet.

3. Vector-borne Transmission
Transmitted to humans and other animals by blood-feeding
anthropods, such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.
Example of Diseases:
 Dengue
 Malaria
Preventive Measures:
 Maintain environmental Hygiene to prevent the breeding of
mosquitos/insects in stagnant water.
 Take personal protection to prevent insect/mosquito bites
Indirect Transmission
1. Droplet Transmission
Occurs when bacteria or viruses travel on relatively large respiratory
Droplets that people sneeze, cough, or exhale.
Example of Diseases:
 Influenza
 Common Cold
Preventive Measures:
 Perform hand hygiene properly and immediately after making contact
with sick persons.
 Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
 Keep a distance of at least one meter from the sick person.

2. Air-borne Transmission
Airborne transmission occurs when bacteria or viruses travel in droplet
nuclei that become aerosolized.
Example of Diseases:
 Tuberculosis
 Pulmonary
 Measles
 Chickenpox
Preventive Measures:
 Maintain good indoor ventilation.
 Anyone with symptoms should not attend school.
 Seek medical advice immediately if unwell.

D. Application: (Google Meet)

After the discussion, the students will be divided into 3 groups and they will be
given different tasks to do. And they will be rated according to the following
criteria:
 Content - 50%
 Organization - 30%
 Creativity - 20%
Total - 100%

Group 1: News Casting

The group will create a simple report about how direct transmission
works and its preventive measures. They will pick a member to be the
newscaster.
Group 2: Role Playing

The group will make a skit about how indirect transmission works and
what should they do to prevent it.

Group 3: Poster Making

The group will create a poster that symbolizes the prevention of

transmission of communicable diseases. A representative is needed to explain
their work.

E. Generalization:
1. I am confident that I can avoid/prevent the communicable diseases because
______________.

IV. Evaluation
I. Multiple Choice. (Google Forms)
Pick the right answer from the Box. Write your Answer on the Space Provided.

Air-borne transmission Dengue Fever

Direct and Indirect Droplet transmission

Hand, food and mouth disease

Dengue Fever 1. Disease that can be transmitted through mosquito bites.

Direct and Indirect 2. Two kinds of transmission.
Hand, foot and mouth disease 3. Disease that can be transmitted through kissing.
Air-borne transmission 4. Pulmonary disease can be transmitted through ________.
Droplet transmission 5. Influenza can be transmitted through _________.

II. True or False

Write T if True or F if False. Write your Answer on the Space Provided.

T 1. Communicable diseases can be transmitted from insects to humans.
