Have you recorded your risk assessment and shared the conclusions with the
employees affected?
Do you choose PPE so that it is suitable for the risk and for the wearer?
Is all your PPE CE marked to show that it’s made to an approved standard?
Do you have clear guidelines so that everyone knows which PPE must be worn in
what circumstances?
Do you use signs to show where PPE use is mandatory?
Where you issue small items of PPE to food handlers (e.g. gloves or ear plugs) are
these coloured blue so that they can be readily seen if accidentally dropped into
food?
Have you addressed the issue of allergic reaction to natural rubber latex gloves and
provided alternatives?

Have you provided PPE to all staff who need to use it?
Have you made arrangements to ensure agency staff and other temporary workers
are equipped with the right PPE?
Have you included mobile staff as well as those based at fixed locations in your
arrangements for PPE?
Do you offer alternatives, e.g. different models of safety footwear, so that you give a
measure of personal choice while still providing adequate protection?

Do all your employees know your arrangements for the issue and replacement of
PPE?
Have you trained all employees so that they know what PPE is required, how to use
it properly and how to look after it?
Do your employees know how to dispose of used PPE?
Storage
Where appropriate have you made arrangements for PPE to be stored when not in
use?
Do these ensure that the PPE is kept clean and free of contamination?

Have you implemented a system to ensure that replacement PPE is readily available

Do you have a record of all PPE personally issued or available to employees?
Monitoring
Do your managers and supervisors check that PPE is being properly worn, e.g. during
safety checks and walk rounds?
Do they take action when they see staff not wearing PPE, or not wearing it properly?
Do managers and supervisors lead by example, wearing their own PPE whenever
required?
Have you considered the need for regular skin checks (health surveillance) for
anyone who has to wear gloves on a regular basis?
