Executive summary
Today’s healthcare technology plays acritical role in health services. In Ethiopia, the lack of
proper management of medical equipment has limited the capacity of health institutions to
deliver adequate health care. In spite of the fact, there is no proper follow up from the
stockholder’s side to mitigate the failures of the medical equipment in hospitals. To minimize
this gap the federal ministry of health (FMOH) developed the EHRIG guidelines. In 2009 the
EHRIG guidelines were replaced by the EHSTG guidelines.Chapter 15 of the EHSTG is
about medical equipment management and contains 11 standards that tells jus how to manage
medical equipment. To promote proper management of healthcare technology Hospital has to
confrim Medical Equipment Management Advisory Committee from multi-disciplinary team
to updated the hospital’s core Medical equipment list and make direction on disposal of
Medical equipment as well as to share ownership“
 MEC PROPOSAL

Introduction
The MEC is chaired by the medical director of the hospital and the head of medical
equipment management unit should be the secretary. Depending on the equipment being
discussed by the MEC, specialists from the associated department/case team may also
participate. The MEC should be composed of the hospital medical director and representative
of nurses, pharmacists, laboratory, administrative personnel and biomedical personnel basis.

5. Head of OB/Gyn department

10. Head of ophthalmology department
11. Head of operating rooms
12. Head of Intensive Care Unit
13. Head of emergency department
14. Head of laboratory
15. Head of Pharmacy department
16. Head of finance department
17. Nursing director
18. Environmental health specialist
19. Quality manager
Goal
The goal MEC is to improve the management of medical equipment in the hospital which
will contribute to improved quality and capacity of healthcare services.

Dear concerned body

As described earlier, the conformation of medical equipment advisory committee is the

mission of a hospital that is governed by EHSTG guideline. The job description and also how
to form the committee is clearly forwarded on the guide line. I as head of biomedical
Engineering and biomedical Equipment maintenance, here compiled all the necessary
documents regarding the committee. Without per supervision of the medical equipment
committee, the chapter 15 checklist report do not give a sense. As a chairman of a medical
Equipment committee, please announce for all of 19 candidate members listed on this
proposal paper. I am looking to you for immediate approval of this proposal.
