MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION (SPRING), 2021

PROGRAMME: B.TECH : Mechanical Engg.
Course Code: ME3101
Course Name: DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS
Pages: 03 Full marks: 50 Duration of Examination: 02.00 Hours
N.B.: (1) All questions are compulsory. (2) Assume suitable data wherever necessary with justification. (3) Figures
to the right hand margin indicate full mark and (4) All parts of a question should be answered at one place.
Q.1 (a) Find the value of load ‘P’ for the riveted joint shown in Fig.1 based on a working shear
stress of 100 MPa for the rivets materials. The four rivets are identical and the diameter of each
rivet is 20 mm. [8]
(b) A triple riveted butt joint with two unequal cover plates joins two 25 mm plates as shown in
Fig. 2. The rivet arrangement is zigzag and the details are given as pitch = 22 cm in outer row and
11 cm in inner rows, Rivet diameter = 33 mm
Calculate the efficiency of the joint when the allowable stresses are 75 MPa, 60 MPa and 125 MPa
in tension, shear and crushing respectively. [7]
Q.2 A shaft carries a pulley ‘A’ at the left end and a spur gear ‘B’ at the middle of bearing supports
C and D as shown in Fig.3. The pulley is 1000 mm in diameter and gear pitch diameter is 600 mm.
The pulley is keyed to the shaft at 400 mm to the left of the left hand bearing and the distance
between bearings C and D is 1250 mm. The shaft transmits 20 kW and runs at 750 rpm. The shaft
receives power from a motor placed vertically below the pulley through a flat belt with ratio of
tensions 2.5. The shaft delivers power to a gear placed horizontally in front. The shaft rotates in
anticlockwise direction looking from left. The pressure angle of the gear is 20o. The weight of A
and B are 300 N and 250 N respectively. The relation of the normal (Pr) and tangential (Pt)
components of force acted at the pitch circle radius of the gear is Pr  Pt tan 20o . For this shaft, the
permissible angle of twist is 0.2o per meter length. The modulus of rigidity of the shaft material is
G  79300 N/mm 2 . The yield stress for the shaft material in simple tension is 206 GPa. Assume,
the factor of safety is 2.0. Shock and fatigue factors in bending and torsion are 2.0 and 1.5
respectively. (i) Determine the diameter of the shaft according to the distortion energy theory (ii)
Calculate the permissible angle of twist between the supports of ‘C’ and ‘D’ (iii) Determine the
shaft diameter on the basis of torsional rigidity. [9+2+4]

Q.3 An open type V-belt drive is to transmit 30 kW from a pitch diameter sheave operating at 1500
rpm. The bigger pulley rotates at 600 rpm. The center distance between the input and output shafts
is twice the diameter of the big pulley. The groove angle is 40o and the coefficient of friction for the
belt and sheave is 0.25, and the coefficient of the friction between the belt and big pulley is 0.33.
The cross section of the belt is 38 mm wide at the top by 25 mm deep. Each belt weighs 1.2 g/cc 3
and the allowable stresses in the belt is 2.55 N/mm2.The belt should operate at a velocity of 25 m/s
approximately. Assume, CSer = 1.3, CSpd = 1.04 and Cw = 0.98, Cvl = 1.0. Calculate: the i) diameter
of the pulleys ii) length of the belt iii) width of the cross-section of the belt at the bottom iv) the belt
tensions v) how many belts are required? [5×2]
Q.4 (a) Determine the percentage in horsepower capacity made possible in changing over from a
flat belt to a V-belt drive. The diameter of the flat pulley is the same as the pitch diameter of the
grooved pulley. The pulley rotates at the same speed as the grooved pulley. The coefficient of
friction for the flat belt and V-belt is 0.30. The V-belt pulley groove angle is 400. The belts are of
the same material and have the same cross section area. In each case, the angle of wrap is 1800. [5]
(b) A pump is driven by an electric motor through a open type flat belt drive. The following data
is given for this drive. Motor pulley diameter (d ) = 300 mm, Pump pulley diameter (d ) = 600 mm,
S L
Coefficient of friction (μ ) for motor pulley = 0.25 , Coefficient of friction (μ ) for pump pulley =
S L
0.20 ,Center distance between the pulleys =1000 mm; Rotational speed of the motor =1440 rpm;
3
Power transmission = 22 kW; Density of belt material (ρ)= 1050 kg/m ; Design stress for the belt
material (σdes) = 3 MPa; Thickness of the belt = 5 mm; Service factor (Cser) = 1.2. Calculate: i) the
diameters of pulleys, ii) the belt tensions and iii) the length and width of the belt [1+2+2]
