Q.3 An open type V-belt drive is to transmit 30 kW from a pitch diameter sheave operating at 1500
rpm. The bigger pulley rotates at 600 rpm. The center distance between the input and output shafts
is twice the diameter of the big pulley. The groove angle is 40o and the coefficient of friction for the
belt and sheave is 0.25, and the coefficient of the friction between the belt and big pulley is 0.33.
The cross section of the belt is 38 mm wide at the top by 25 mm deep. Each belt weighs 1.2 g/cc 3
and the allowable stresses in the belt is 2.55 N/mm2.The belt should operate at a velocity of 25 m/s
approximately. Assume, CSer = 1.3, CSpd = 1.04 and Cw = 0.98, Cvl = 1.0. Calculate: the i) diameter
of the pulleys ii) length of the belt iii) width of the cross-section of the belt at the bottom iv) the belt
tensions v) how many belts are required? [5×2]
Q.4 (a) Determine the percentage in horsepower capacity made possible in changing over from a
flat belt to a V-belt drive. The diameter of the flat pulley is the same as the pitch diameter of the
grooved pulley. The pulley rotates at the same speed as the grooved pulley. The coefficient of
friction for the flat belt and V-belt is 0.30. The V-belt pulley groove angle is 400. The belts are of
the same material and have the same cross section area. In each case, the angle of wrap is 1800. [5]
(b) A pump is driven by an electric motor through a open type flat belt drive. The following data
is given for this drive. Motor pulley diameter (d ) = 300 mm, Pump pulley diameter (d ) = 600 mm,

Power transmission = 22 kW; Density of belt material (ρ)= 1050 kg/m ; Design stress for the belt
material (σdes) = 3 MPa; Thickness of the belt = 5 mm; Service factor (Cser) = 1.2. Calculate: i) the
diameters of pulleys, ii) the belt tensions and iii) the length and width of the belt [1+2+2]
