Introduction
Problem Statement:
Chickens were reared using the intensive system with the use of
starter and grower for a total of (7) weeks

Aim:
To determine the weight gain of chicks being fed starter and grower
after a time span of (7) weeks

Methodology
Experimental Design:
The chicks were separated after (3) weeks. One group was fed
starter, the other grower. This continued until the (7) weeks concluded

Materials Used:

Cahari pot
Kill cones
Knives
Thermometer
Long handle spoon
Fire side (outdoor)

Activities:
● Cleaning of the area
Before the arrival of the 30 chicks, the area (chicken pen) was
cleared and cleaned thoroughly

● Separation of Chickens
After the 3 weeks were over, the chicks were separated into
groups of 15.

● Slaughtering of Chickens:
When the 7 weeks was completed, the chickens were nnxjxj

Discussion
It was required by CXC, that the children sitting the 2023 examination
conduct an experiment on Broiler production. Due to this on the
12th of February, 2022, the students of the West Demerara
Secondary School proceeded to carry out this experiment for a
(7) week time period. During this time, a total of 30 chicks were
nourished and slaughtered. Within the first 3 weeks, all chick were fed
with starter, since it is vital for the development of, and to support their
bone health and immunity. However according to grow.ifa.coop
“Your chicks should eat starter feed for the first 8 weeks of their life.”
After the 3 week period, the chicks were separated into equal groups.
One group, Group A, continued with starter, while the other group,
Group B, was fed grower. It was noticed and recorded that the
development of Group B was rather poor in comparison to that of
Group A. This was bound to happen according to multiple websites
such as kentnutritiongroup.com, the-chickens-chick.com,
scoopfromthecoop.com and multiple others, chicks are to bed fed
starter for a minimum of 8 weeks, then grower from then onward to be
properly nourished. However, this experiment shows that the steps
provided by those websites are not exactly necessary.
Conclusion, Limitations,
Recommendations

Conclusion
After the investigation was conducted,the data gathered showed that
Group A, showed a significant increase in size, unlike Group B.

Limitations

● Due to holiday and weekends, students were out of school, this


led to the chicks not being fed adequately
● Students were confused and underprepared when the chicken
were to be slaughtered
● The area began to smell after a water can fell over, flies began to
harbor the area

Recommendation

● Students should volunteer to check on chicks/chickens on days


when there is no school
● Experienced persons should give students a step by step
demonstration on how to slaughter a chicken before the
designated date
● A water outlet should be installed closer to the chicken pen,
specifically for the chicken pen

∴Income= 30 x 5.5 x 540
= $89,100

Profit/Loss Comparison
After a comparison of the (2) budgets was made, it was evident that a
profit 2 times the budget was made in both instances. However, the
projected budget made a total of ($271,600 - $111,600= $160,000)
$160,000. While the actual budget made a total of
($89,100 - $$21,415= $63,685) $68,685. This resulted in the projected
budget making more profit than the actual budget.
