CONCRETE MIXTURE (CYLINDER SAMPLE)

A concrete mix is a combination of five major elements in various

proportions: cement, water, coarse aggregates, fine aggregates (sand),
and air.
It is often mistakenly referred to as “cement mix design.” However, cement is
simply one of the ingredients of concrete. It is a binding substance that allows
concrete to set, harden, and adhere to other materials. Therefore, it cannot and
should not be used interchangeably with concrete mix design.

CONCRETE CYLINDER TEST

Concrete test cylinders play an extremely important role in the placement of
concrete for construction and engineering purposes. Every type of concrete has
a design strength, and making concrete cylinders allows the strength of a
particular batch of concrete to be tested.

Concrete cube testing or cylinder testing is done to check the development of

the strength of the concrete. In other words, we test the concrete to check
whether it has reached or developed beyond the characteristic strength of
concrete assume in the design. Based on the test results, conformity can be
checked as per the relevant standards.

STANDARD SIZE OF CONCRETE CYLINDER TEST

For high-strength concrete, ACI Committee 363 recommends using 4 x 8 in.
(100 x 200 mm) cylinders for testing strength and 6 x 12 in. (150 x 300 mm)
cylinders for testing modulus of elasticity.

EQUIPMENT USED IN CONCRETE CYLINDER TEST

 A wheelbarrow or other container to collect a composite sample of fresh
concrete from various types of concrete mixers.

 A conveniently sized scoop- large enough to collect a representative

sample and small enough for easy handling and fresh concrete
placement.
 The specified tamping rod. 4x8in and 6x12in cylinders each require
tamping rods with different lengths and diameters.

 CONCRETE VIBRATOR - A concrete vibrator is a construction tool used on concrete pouring

sites. used to ensure that a pour is even and free of air bubbles so that the concrete will
remain strong and have a smooth finish even after the formwork is removed.
