EXAMPLE FOR A REGULAR EXERCISES
Carry out a drying process in a convection dryer using a air -vapour heat exchanger to heat the
ambient air.
Knowing on the amount of water evaporated from the wet material is 100 kg/h. The temperature of
the outdoor air is 20OC, the relative humidity is 80%, the drying agent get in to the drying chamber
has the dry bulb temperatures (tdb ) is 50OC. The Steam used is moisture saturated steam with its
pressure of 4 bar and the dryness x is 95%. The heat consumption for the actual drying process is
13% higher than the theoretical drying process.
Let's define:
1)Drawing on the system l ayout diagram ( 0,5 marks)
2)Calculate the flow of the fan (m3/h). (4 marks)
3) Amount of steam required to heat the air (kg/h). (2 marks)
4)Calculate the heat exchange surface area of the heat exchange incase the heat transfer
coefficient between the air and the steam k = 30 W/m2K, the heat exchanger efficiency is 77%. (3,5
marks)

Exercise 1:
The Soy bean has the specific density of soy bean is 753kg/m3, The initial and final moisture
contents of soy bean are 33% and 13% (wet basis). The shape coefficient of soybean grain
=1,3 and its dimension of grain are a=3,5mm, b=5mm, l=6mm
During drying, the outdoor air temperature and relative humidity is 37OC and 70%, the drying
agent temperature is 50OC. Drying agent velocity vg = 1.5 m/s,
Calculate the drying rate (U1) of the constant rate period for a soybean drying process with
the following parameters:

Exercise 5.1:
Noddle is dried by the hot air flow through the heat exchanger in two modes: one-time
heating mode intermediate heating mode. For the one-time heating mode, the drying
temperature is t = 70C, while the intermediate heating will be divided into 3 heating
times. When drying, the air temperature is t0 = 25C, tw0 = 20C.
1. Drawing the layout and heat supply diagram in the two ways of supplying drying
agent mentioned above.
2. The process of drying agent level once and intermediate heating 3 times is shown on
the Id graph. Find the values (I, d, t, ) at the points.
3. Determine the heat loss of the heating process and the heat loss of the drying
process of the two processes.
12
Exercise 5.2:
A corn dryer with input capacity G1 = 2000 kg/h, initial moisture content 30%. Given the velocity
of the agent moving in the drying chamber V = 1m/s. The dryer is designed to both drying
modes: recirculation before the heater and non-recirculation of exhaust air. The ambient air
temperature A (t = 27C and ts = 20C). The drying agent is heated to tB = 80C, the exhaust air
temperature tC = 50C.
1. Draw the drying system diagram and build the drying processes for two modes with
recirculation coefficient n = 25% on the I – d chart.
2. Determine the state parameters of drying agent.
3. Calculate the drying agent cost of the drying process in the recirculation mode? Calculate the
amount of fresh air l0 ? amount of return air lH?
4. Calculate the heat consumption of the drying process in two modes.
13
Exercise 5.3:
A dryer can work in 3 modes: (a) non-recirculation drying, (2) recirculation font of the heater
and behind the heater, n = 125 %. We known the ambient temperature is 30C, the vapor partial
pressure is 0.03 bar, the drying temperature is 90C , the temperature of exhaust air is 50C. The
cylindrical drying chamber has a diameter of 0.8m, the agent velocity is 1.5 m/s. The drying
agent is heated by a steam heat exchanger .The heat exchanger uses saturated steam with
pressure 5 bar, initial dry ratio 0.85, final dry ratio 0.1.
1. Draw the layout diagram of the drying system.
2. Calculate the specific heat consumption for all 3 processes
3. Compare the capacity of the heater in the 3 cases. Which drying mode should be selected
for this drying system?
4. Calculate the amount of steam consumed in the 3 drying modes knowing the heater
efficiency is 80%.

Exercise 5.4 :
A heat pump dryer for drying vegetables. Knowing the required drying temperature is 40C, the
exhaust gas after leaving the drying chamber with a moisture content of d = 35 g/kgkkk is
returned to 100%. Exhaust air is blown through the indoor unit to condense moisture and
dehumidify. Know that the air coming out of the indoor unit has a humidity ratio d = 7g
moisture/kgkkk. After passing through the indoor unit, cold dry air is blown through the outdoor
unit, increasing the air temperature to t = 40C and then continuing to blow into the drying
chamber.
a) Draw a diagram of the operating principle of the device, represent the process on a graph I -
d or t-d
b) Determine the state parameters of the drying agent at the points.
c) If the fan has an air flow Qf = 5000m3 /h. Calculate the amount of condensate removed from
the drying chamber through the indoor unit?
d) Capacity of evaporator unit QL
e) Heat of condenser unit must provide QN .

Exercise 5.5 :
A heat pump dryer is designed to operate in a drying mode that removes the agent. The outdoor air
has a wet bulb temperature and a dew point temperature of 22C and 20C, respectively, the drying
agent has a temperature and humidity ratio of 45C and 8g/kgkk, respectively. Exhaust air out of the
drying chamber with a relative humidity of 50%. The supply flow of the fan is 1000 m 3 /h.
• Request:
• Draw the block diagram of the equipment layout and build the drying processes on the graph of
moist air T-d.
• Find the state parameters at the nodes of the two drying processes.
• Determine the specific agent cost and specific heat consumption for the drying process.
